Book excerpt: In Ireland's Call BBC journalist Stephen Walker charts the fascinating stories of 40 Irishmen who swapped the sports field for the battlefield - household names who gave up their blossoming careers to volunteer for the Great War. Using rare archive letters, memoirs and newspaper reports, this compelling book features the stories of sportsmen whose lives were tragically cut short in the mud of the Somme, the despair of Ypres and the heat of Gallipoli. It chronicles the remarkable achievements of Irish international footballers and rugby players, athletes, GAA stars, cricketers, hockey players and a record-breaking Irish champion golfer. A century on, their sacrifices and those of a generation of Irish sporting heroes, are finally and faithfully recorded in this unique and evocative account.

Book Irish Heroes in the War

Download or read book Irish Heroes in the War written by Joseph Keating and published by . This book was released on 2002-07 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a the story of the origin and development of the Tyneside Irish Brigade ending with a brief and highly imaginative account of the 1st July 1916. Locally the four battalions were known as 1st - 4th Tyneside Irish, officially they were the 24th - 27th Northumberland Fusiliers, likewise the brigade s designation was the 103rd, part of the 34th Division. This is more than a history, it is an extremely useful reference work in that it includes alphabetical lists of officers of the brigade, with biographical details, along with lists of tne NCOs and men, all shown by battalion and by company within each battalion. These are accompanied by group photos of officers and NCOs of each battalion with individuals numbered and identified, and groups of officers and men of each battalion. One chapter of the book is entitled Irish Heroes Who Have Won The Victoria Cross; this lists thirty-six officers and men with biographical details and citations plus portrait photos of twenty-four of them. There is a further chapter giving details of awards made to some officers and men, including a so-called Card of Honour which is, presumably, a certificate acknowledging meritorious service, probably awarded by the divisional or brigade commander. Finally there is a listing of Who s Who of the Tyneside Irish Movement and Associates giving brief details of numerous civilians who played a part in raising the brigade or who were involved in Irish Nationalist politics in Tyneside. The introduction is by John Redmond M.P, the leader of the Irish Nationalist Party in Parliament, who was primarily responsible for bringing the Irish National Volunteers into the war, and this is followed by a chapter on the Irish in Great Britain by another M.P., Mr T. O Connor. The politics and mechanics of the formation of the Brigade and the rivalry with the Tyneside Scottish all make fascinating reading.

Book Heroes Or Traitors

Book excerpt: Éire seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922 and simultaneously established its own National Army (known as the Free State Army, later as the Irish Defence Forces). Regardless of this historic national step, the centuries-long tradition of Irishmen joining the British military did not cease. Rather, the custom continued, and during the Second World War, despite Éire's official neutral stance, tens of thousands of Irishmen joined the British military. Within this number, there is a unique sub-group of soldiers who took a personally greater risk by enlisting - those that deserted from the Irish National Army.

Book The Irish in the American Civil War

Download or read book The Irish in the American Civil War written by Damian Shiels and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-02-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just under 200,000 Irishmen took part in the American Civil War, making it one of the most significant conflicts in Irish history. Hundreds of thousands more were affected away from the battlefield, both in the US and in Ireland itself. The Irish contribution, however, is often only viewed through the lens of famous units such as the Irish Brigade, but the real story is much more complex and fascinating. From the Tipperary man who was the first man to die in the war, to the Corkman who was the last General mortally wounded in action; from the flag bearer who saved his regimental colours at the cost of his arms, to the Roscommon man who led the hunt for Abraham Lincoln's assassin, what emerges in this book is a catalogue of gallantry, sacrifice and bravery.

Book Ireland s Aviator Heroes of World War II

Download or read book Ireland s Aviator Heroes of World War II written by John C. Hewitt and published by Mercier Press Ltd. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 1082 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ireland's Aviator Heroes of World War II' celebrates Irish aviators who served in the Royal Air Force during the dark days of the Second World War. Individual stories have been painstakingly and extensively researched through interviews with the surviving subjects and their families, and using the original log books and service records of the men. Many of the stories contain details of the individuals' participation in important wartime campaigns, although others are limited to war service records due to a lack of surviving information. Above all this book celebrates the great courage and sacrifice demonstrated by these Irishmen during their contribution to the Allied war effort against Nazi Germany, her western allies and Japan. Many of the men included paid the ultimate price for their participation. The book is also well illustrated with many photographs, some taken by the subjects themselves.

Book How the Irish Won the American Revolution

Download or read book How the Irish Won the American Revolution written by Phillip Thomas Tucker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Continental Congress decided to declare independence from the British empire in 1776, ten percent of the population of their fledgling country were from Ireland. By 1790, close to 500,000 Irish citizens had immigrated to America. They were was very active in the American Revolution, both on the battlefields and off, and yet their stories are not well known. The important contributions of the Irish on military, political, and economic levels have been long overlooked and ignored by generations of historians. However, new evidence has revealed that Washington’s Continental Army consisted of a far larger percentage of Irish soldiers than previously thought—between 40 and 50 percent—who fought during some of the most important battles of the American Revolution. Romanticized versions of this historical period tend to focus on the upper class figures that had the biggest roles in America’s struggle for liberty. But these adaptations neglect the impact of European and Irish ideals as well as citizens on the formation of the revolution. Irish contributors such as John Barry, the colonies’ foremost naval officer; Henry Knox, an artillery officer and future Secretary of War; Richard Montgomery, America’s first war hero and martyr; and Charles Thomson, a radical organizer and Secretary to the Continental Congress were all instrumental in carrying out the vision for a free country. Without their timely and disproportionate assistance, America almost certainly would have lost the desperate fight for its existence. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book Heroes of Jadotville

Download or read book Heroes of Jadotville written by Rose Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is a pity that we, who never believed in the use of force, must suffer for the blunders of little dictators and stupid military leaders."--Comdt Patrick Quinlan, Jadotville, Sept. 1961 ***This new edition from the soldiers' perspectives coincides with the forthcoming Netflix film starring Jamie Dornan. In 1961, during the United Nations intervention in the Katangan conflict in the Congo, central Africa, a company of Irish peacekeeping troops, led by Comdt Patrick Quinlan, was forced to surrender to soldiers loyal to Katanga's prime minister, Moise Tshombe. Originally dispatched to protect Belgian colonists in Jadotville, they were isolated, without water, supplies, or support when they were attacked and forced to defend themselves in a brutal five-day battle. Shamefully neglected by their superiors, they were portrayed as cowards upon their return home. Rose Doyle draws on material provided by Leo Quinlan, son of Comdt Quinlan, as well as interviews, reports, journals and letters to bring answers to an episode that has been under-represented. She blows the lid off the real story of what happened, exposing how Irish peacekeeping soldiers became pawns in an international ploy for control of Katanga and its vast mineral wealth. *** "by far the fullest account of . . . what became known in the Irish Army as the Jadotville Affair" --The Irish Times Subject: Military History, History, Irish Studies]

Book excerpt: In the New York Times bestseller The Immortal Irishman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Timothy Egan illuminates the dawn of the great Irish American story, with all its twists and triumphs, through the life of one heroic man. A dashing young orator during the Great Hunger of the 1840s, Thomas Francis Meagher led a failed uprising against British rule, for which he was banished to a Tasmanian prison colony for life. But two years later he was “back from the dead” and in New York, instantly the most famous Irishman in America. Meagher’s rebirth included his leading the newly formed Irish Brigade in many of the fiercest battles of the Civil War. Afterward, he tried to build a new Ireland in the wild west of Montana — a quixotic adventure that ended in the great mystery of his disappearance, which Egan resolves convincingly at last. “This is marvelous stuff. Thomas F. Meagher strides onto Egan's beautifully wrought pages just as he lived — powerfully larger than life. A fascinating account of an extraordinary life.”—Daniel James Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Facing the Mountain
