Book excerpt: "Alvin Jackson's Home Rule: An Irish History examines the development of Home Rule and devolution in Ireland from the nineteenth century to the present. It traces some of the main themes in Irish peace-making from their late Victorian roots to the beginning of the millennium: it explores the origins of the Good Friday Agreement, and many of the interconnections between Irish political history and contemporary affairs. The work offers an incisive reappraisal of different political leaders through the period. Drawing on new archival evidence, Home Rule illuminates a crucial aspect of British and Irish history over a two-hundred-year span."--BOOK JACKET.

This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland and the Home Rule Movement The great tendency which has been so marked a feature of Irish life in the course of the last decade to turn the attention of the people towards efforts at self improvement and the development of self-reliance without regard to English aid, English neglect, or English Opinion, excellent though it has been in every other respect, has had this one drawback - that there has grown up a generation of Englishmen, well intentioned towards our country, to whom the problems of Irish Government are an unknown quantity. The ignorance of Irish affairs in England is due partly to ourselves, but also to a natural heed lessness arising from distance and preoccupation with problems with which Englishmen are more intimately concerned. Book excerpt: The Home Rule Bill, passed by the British parliament in 1912, aimed at giving Ireland some control over her own affairs. However, this was postponed when the First World War broke out, and by the time the war had ended the political landscape in Ireland had changed irrevocably. Download or read book Irish Affairs the Home Rule Question written by Philip George Cambray and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Affairs the Home Rule Question: A Comparison of the Attitude of Political Parties Towards Irish Problems I have been asked by the author to contribute a few words by way of introduction, and I conclude that the request is made of me as an ardent Irish Unionist by conviction and birth. As a relative of the Lord Castlereagh who was responsible for that great blessing to Ireland, and especially to Ulster, the Act of Union, I am by heredity an opponent of Home Rule. Experience and knowledge of Ireland as a former member for an Ulster constituency and, at a later period, as as Lord Lieutenant have strengthened my opinion against Home Rule. Whatever progress and prosperity have come to Ireland - and of later years the advancement has been pronounced - they are due to the policy of Union. If it were broken, as the Home Rulers desire, ruin, bankruptcy, and not impossibly civil war might be the result. From the financial point of view the statement laid before Mr. Gladstone in 1893 by the Belfast Chamber of Commerce proved beyond all doubt that his proposals were absolutely unworkable. Book The Home Rule Crisis 1912 14

Download or read book The Home Rule Crisis 1912 14 written by Gabriel Doherty and published by Mercier Press Ltd. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Home Rule Bill, passed by the British parliament in 1912, was due, when it came into effect in 1914, to give Ireland some control over her own affairs for the first time since the Act of Union in 1800. However, this was postponed when the First World War broke out and by the time the war had ended the political landscape in Ireland had changed irrevocably. The nationalist movement split into the followers of John Redmond who chose to fight for the British in the war in the hope that their loyalty would be rewarded and those on the other side who felt that this was just a delaying tactic and that 'England's difficulty [was] Ireland's opportunity'. Meanwhile the Unionists were violently opposed to any form of Irish self government, believing that 'Home rule is Rome rule' and this led to the signing of the Ulster Covenant and the establishment of the Ulster Volunteers. The respected historians who have contributed to this book examine the reaction to the Home Rule Bill across many shades of political opinion across these islands and give a fascinating analysis of what might have been if external events had not overtaken local ones.
