The woman scientist Iris Runge, who received an interdisciplinary education at the University of Göttingen, was long employed as the sole mathematical authority at these companies in Berlin. It will be shown how mathematical connections were made between statistics and quality control, and between physical-chemical models and the actual problems of mass production. The organization of industrial laboratories, the relationship between theoretical and experimental work, and the role of mathematicians in these settings will also be explained. By investigating the social, economic, and political conditions that unfolded from the time of the German Empire until the end of the Second World War, the book hopes to build a bridge between specialized fields – mathematics and engineering – and the general culture of a particular era. It hopes, furthermore, to build a bridge between the history of science and industry, on the one hand, and the fields of Gender and Women’s Studies on the other. Finally, by examining the life and work of numerous industrial researchers, insight will be offered into the conditions that enabled a woman to achieve a prominent professional position during a time when women were typically excluded from the scientific workforce.

Book excerpt: It is forty years since Burgeff published, in 1926, the first comprehensive catalogue of the genus Zygaena Fabricius, forming part 33 of the Lepidopterorum Catalogus. Following the pattern and general layout of Burgeff's work, we have attempted to produce a catalogue in which all names in the genus Zygaena are included, with references to the literature where these names were originally published. Additional references are included when these refer to illustrations of a species, subspecies or form, or to a taxonomic change, e.g., a change in status. References to misidentifications are generally omitted unless a new species has been described at a later date. In compiling this work we have adhered to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature as adopted by the XV International Congress of Zoology. However, although the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature recognises the necessity of names of lower rank than subspecies, they do not at present deal with such names. The provisions of the Code do not apply to them and, therefore, such names have no nomenclatural status. Every subspecies is given equal status in the catalogue although their relative value is not always the same. Certain authors have very often separated sub species on minute differences and a subsequent examination of further material, taken over a number of years, has shown that the differences are not always constant. In many cases, however, we have been unable to verify the status of each subspecies.

Book excerpt: In the turbulent decades following the Mexican Revolution, Mexico City saw a drastic influx of female migrants seeking escape and protection from the ravages of war in the countryside. While some settled in slums and tenements, where the informal economy often provided the only means of survival, the revolution, in the absence of men, also prompted women to take up traditionally male roles, created new jobs in the public sphere open to women, and carved out new social spaces in which women could exercise agency. In Deco Body, Deco City, Ageeth Sluis explores the effects of changing gender norms on the formation of urban space in Mexico City by linking aesthetic and architectural discourses to political and social developments. Through an analysis of the relationship between female migration to the city and gender performances on and off the stage, the book shows how a new transnational ideal female physique informed the physical shape of the city. By bridging the gap between indigenismo (pride in Mexico’s indigenous heritage) and mestizaje (privileging the ideal of race mixing), this new female deco body paved the way for mestizo modernity. This cultural history enriches our understanding of Mexico’s postrevolutionary decades and brings together social, gender, theater, and architectural history to demonstrate how changing gender norms formed the basis of a new urban modernity.
