Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Under the Stuarts and During, Vol. 3: The Interregnum The King enjoyed his own again, and England rejoiced chap. Exceedingly. Even Oliver's unbeaten soldiers, disgusted with his incompetent successors, were for the most part ready to retire into private life. Yet the spirit of the Puritan revolution survived, and the Mayor of Dover pre sented a richly bound Bible to the restored monarch, who graciously accepted it, remarking that it was the thing that he loved above all things in the world. At Canterbury a crowd Of importunate suitors gave him some foretaste of future troubles, but the entry into London was wonderful. I stood in the Strand, ' says Evelyn, and beheld it, and blessed God.' With the shouts Of welcome still in his ears Charles took refuge in the arms Of Barbara Palmer, and next day issued a proclamation against vicious, debauched, and profane persons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 3-volume book features a detailed historical account of one of the most turbulent periods in Irish history. The Tudor conquest (or reconquest) of Ireland took place under the Tudor dynasty, which held the Kingdom of England during the 16th century. Following a failed rebellion against the crown by Silken Thomas, the Earl of Kildare, in the 1530s, Henry VIII was declared King of Ireland in 1542 by statute of the Parliament of Ireland, with the aim of restoring such central authority as had been lost throughout the country during the previous two centuries. Several people who helped establish the Plantations of Ireland also played a part later in the early colonization of North America, particularly a group known as the West Country men. Alternating conciliation and repression, the conquest continued for sixty years, until 1603, when the entire country came under the nominal control of James I. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a record of things the author saw, and of conversations he had, during a series of visits to Ireland between January and June 1888 made on his return from a sojourn in Rome during the celebration of the Jubilee of His Holiness Leo XIII. These visits were made in quest of light, not so much upon the proceedings and the purposes of the Irish "Nationalists" – with which, on both sides of the Atlantic, he has been tolerably familiar for many years past – as upon the social and economic results in Ireland of the processes of political vivisection to which that country has previously been so long subjected.
