Book Ireland and Her Churches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ireland and Her Churches Classic Reprint written by James Godkin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland and Her Churches Ireland is at the present moment in a condition of which a London journal gives the following summary description The new outbreak of Fenianism in Ireland is unquestionably of a very serious character. When we consider what the circumstances of this new outbreak signify, then we say it takes a serious aspect. It shows that disaffection in Ireland is wide-spread, that it is growing, that it has an organ isation which works in precisely the most harrassing manner; and, moreover, that while its mode of working is judicious enough to harass our mighty military power, it is audacious enough and successful enough to encourage the rebellious spirit which so largely prevails over the country. In short, this outbreak justifies all the apprehensions expressed in this journal three weeks ago, namely - that in a country like Ireland five or six thousand rebels, divided into different bands, and acting on the plan of the late Polish insurrection, may harass and fatigue five times that number of troops, and keep the country in a state of revolt for an almost indefi nite time. The Polish insurrection, in which there were never more than men engaged, made work for half a million of soldiers. As we have said, the rebellion could not have lasted a week if the insurgents had collected in one body, but under the guerilla system on which it was maintained the insurrection, was prolonged for more than a year. Now this is the danger we have before us In Ireland and the present outbreak shows that the Fenians know how to make it a very serious one. A hundred men 'seen' here, two hundred 'met' there, half an army in general pursuit, the whole country in agita tion and alarm, and the executive so far baffled and helpless - that is the spectacle we have to contem plate through the telegrams of yesterday and to-day. There is nothing for it but a prompt and wise severity. A considerable di ference exists between the severity wnich is wise and the severity which is cruel, though both may be very formidable. The Irish Executive must adopt the first of them without flinching, and without an hour's delay. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Irish Church Perhaps the greatest interest of all will be felt by those who, rejoicing in the liberty of a reformed faith and an emancipated Church, will see in Ireland the last of the Western Churches to acknowledge the supremacy of, the pope. When all other parts of Western Europe had already for centuries acknow ledged his sway, Ireland was still independent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Church From the Point of View of One of Its Layman They know the weak points of their Church better than those to whom it is only a question of politics, because they know them from personal experience; they think it however a question need ing the most deliberate and careful judgment of the best minds, not only on account of its great intrinsic difficulties, but because it touches all concerned in their deepest feelings, and in the best (and worst) parts of their nature, and because there is great danger of real mischief being done by a mistaken course, in the increase of religious strife - Ireland's greatest curse. Download or read book The Church of Ireland Classic Reprint written by Thomas Olden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of Ireland While these sheets were passing through the press the Church of Ireland suffered a grievous loss in the death of the learned and accomplished Dr. Reeves, Bishop of Down, Connor, and Dromore, who was without a rival in his acquaintance with the ecclesiastical literature of Ireland. Up to the last, notwithstanding his many engagements, he found time with his usual kindness to read the proofs of this work for me. The essay on S. Patrick (Appendix A.) had not then been reached by the printer, but before any part of the work went to the press I had sent this to the Bishop in manuscript. I felt doubtful as to how he would receive it, as it differs considerably from previous theories on the subject. I was, however, much gratified when he assured me of the pleasure with which he read the argument. I hope it will be found to throw some light on a difficult subject. The Bishop has been taken from us, in the Providence of God, when he could ill be spared, and I deeply regret that it is now not in my power to thank him for the help he so willingly gave me. Book Saint Patrick and the Early Church of Ireland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Saint Patrick and the Early Church of Ireland Classic Reprint written by Wm M. Blackburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Patrick, and the Early Church of Ireland Was there ever such a man as Saint Patrick? It was wise to consider this question before attempting to write his life. By some it has been doubted, by a few others denied. But in such cases there has usually been a strong party feeling, or an ignorance of certain original sources of history. There is a distinction to be made between the myth and the man. Imagination has given us a Robinson Crusoe; the real man was Alexander Selkirk. The Saint Patrick of the ordinary Irish heart is certainly very mythical. The portrait of him was drawn from imagination; the colours are not those of the fifth, but those of the twelfth or fourteenth century. The deeds are manufactured to order and by the job, and the life is made of the baldest legends. This Patrick is a fully-developed Papist of the time, when certain errors pre vailed, which he could not have known in the fifth century. He is constantly working miracles, some of them very trifling, and some of them astounding, beyond all that was ever recorded of a mere man. For his especial benefit divine revelations are made to him, which cause a greater amazement than any ever made to Moses or Paul. He is too wonderful to be real. The myth business was entirely overdone. The manufacturers did not perceive that com mon sense might some time be restored to the human race. In the Middle Ages it was customary with the monks to exercise their scholars in writing the lives of imaginary saints; asserting that it was a pious and very improving way of exercising the imagination! L The best of these fanciful biographies were laid aside for future use; and after the lapse of a few ages, when their statements could not be disproved, were produced and published as genuine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case of the Established Church of Ireland This makes a most important difference. I grant, that if the Ecclesiastical persons alone were concerned, it might be very reasonable to say, - These men have no right or title to the incomes which they enjoy beyond their own lives; and provided the same amount is secured to them for that time, they suffer no injury or injustice, if a different appropriation of their incomes is made, when they are taken away. But this is putting out of sight the important fact that they are not the Church, but a part, and a small part of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland and England: Or the Irish Land and Church Questions These few prefatory remarks are only to anticipate the many critical remarks, which I have, in a manner, invited by the following pages, and to make the best excuse I can for myself, notwithstanding, "qui s'excuse s'accuse." Part II. consists chiefly of abridged extracts from the 3rd Edition of "The People's Blue Book," - published in 1862, the 1st Edition of which was published in 1857, and the 2nd Edition within one month afterwards. I now, for the first time, acknowledge myself the Author of that hook, my reason for withholding my name being, simply, the fear that, it was premature in time and startling in effect, and, therefore, would bring upon the Author much abuse and no credit. That fear was well founded, for the abuse was unbounded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
