Book Strategy of Education primary and Higher in Iraq

Download or read book Strategy of Education primary and Higher in Iraq written by Sami AL-Mudhaffar and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades of war and sanctions, Iraq has suffered great losses in death and damages. Harm has not been inflicted only on persons, communities, communications, institutions and land; but equal and perhaps greater damage has been the outcome of the lost development opportunities: stagnated communities, uneducated children, adolescents and youth, neglected land, accelerating mortality rates, and the construction that did not take place. The nation has also witnessed an unprecedented devastation and a near-to-complete break-down of the education system. The prevailing state-of-affairs of higher education is disheartening and presents a virtual collapse: academic staff continues to leave for fear of mounting threats and insurgency, teaching being erratic and most buildings being damaged or destroyed. The education system is currently in a stage of profound rebuilding and restructuring particularly at a time when the demand for higher education system addressing the national needs and priorities comprehensively seems to be a source of much pressure. This mounting pressure is equally evident on Iraqi institutions and centres of knowledge to produce relevant and knowledge at an unparalleled rate. The diverse demands for qualified human resources of the complex national economy with evolving global links require knowledge and skills for decision-making and for production. The current efforts of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) and institutions of higher learning are in the midst of accelerating change, yet they have to grapple with profound processes of decision-making addressing issues such as: relevance (curricula reforms and accreditation); quality; scientific research; teachers' and students' welfare; technical and teachers' education; academic freedom; decentralization and institutional autonomy; long-term financial sustainability; and internationalization. Simultaneously, institutions of higher learning will also have as a goal to provide learners with academic and ethical values, as well as having the commitment to educate critical citizens prepared to engage in democratic participation. Change of the Iraqi higher education structure and of research is thus seated in an extremely complex reality, in which no self-evident choices are available and where actions have multiple effects in a dynamically interdependent environment.Yet the challenges Iraq faces cannot be solved with piecemeal changes ;but strong forces that will affect Iraqi society in the near future: economic reconstruction, population change, globalization and the rapid growth in knowledge. The situation must be met by a fundamental reorientation of higher education activities under a unified perspective (new vision). Providing this "new vision" and a "strategic plan" for specific and realistic short- and medium-term choices is the aim of this paper. The vision and the strategic plan have been formulated to help guide the initiatives of the MOHESR and to provide clear priorities for an efficient use of available resources.

Book E Learning in the Middle East and North Africa MENA Region

Download or read book E Learning in the Middle East and North Africa MENA Region written by Alan S. Weber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, due to factors of ICT infrastructural and broadband maturation, rising levels of educational attainment and computer literacy, and diversification strategies, e-learning has exploded in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. However, significant barriers remain in the region’s e-learning development: lack of research on outcomes and effectiveness, paucity of Arabic language learning objects, monopolies and high cost of telecommunications, cultural taboos, accreditation, censorship, and teacher training. This unique volume is the first comprehensive effort to describe the history, development, and current state of e-learning in each of the 20 MENA countries from Algeria to Yemen. Each entry is expertly written by a specialist who is acutely familiar with the state of e-learning in their respective country, and concludes with a bibliography of key reports, peer-reviewed books and articles, and web resources. E-Learning in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) proves itself as a vital compendium for a wide readership that includes academics and students, transnational program directors, international education experts, MENA government departments, commercial vendors and investors, and ICT development and regulatory agencies involved in e-learning in the Middle East.

Book Education as the Driving Force of Equity for the Marginalized

Download or read book Education as the Driving Force of Equity for the Marginalized written by Boivin, Jacquelynne Anne and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the USA, racism is the most widespread root of oppression. Black people in America, specifically, have suffered from centuries of discrimination and still struggle to receive the same privileges as their white peers. In other countries, however, there are other groups that face similar struggles. Discrimination and oppression based on religion, ethnicity, socio-economic status, political affiliation, and caste are just a few categories. However, education is a root for widespread societal change, making it essential that educators and systems of education enact the changes that need to occur to achieve equity for the groups being oppressed. Education as the Driving Force of Equity for the Marginalized highlights international research from the past decade about the role education is playing in the disruption and dismantling of perpetuated systems of oppression. This research presents the context, ideas, and mechanics behind impactful efforts to dismantle systems of oppression. Covering topics such as teacher preparation, gender inequality, and social justice, this work is essential for teachers, policymakers, college students, education faculty, researchers, administrators, professors, and academicians.

Book Classroom Change in Developing Countries

Download or read book Classroom Change in Developing Countries written by Gerard Guthrie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressive Education, derived mainly from Anglo-American culture, has been the primary frame of reference for student-centered classroom change in developing countries for over 50 years. Yet in many developing countries, strong evidence shows that progressivism has not replaced teacher-centered formalistic classroom practice. Classroom Change in Developing Countries: From Progressive Cage to Formalistic Frame presents a robust case for why formalism should be the primary frame of reference for upgrading classroom teaching in developing countries. Theoretically rich yet grounded in practice, the book draws on case studies from Africa, China and Papua New Guinea to show how culturally intuitive formalistic teaching styles can induce positive classroom change. Synthesising research and evaluation literature on classroom change in developing countries, Guthrie examines some of the methodological flaws in the literature. The book considers the progressive cage, and looks at Confucian influences on teaching in China, progressive reform failures in both Sub-Saharan Africa and Papua New Guinea, as well as offering a critical take on some failings in comparative education. It examines the formalistic frame, addresses methodological issues in culturally grounded research and offers a model of teaching styles for basic classroom research. The book concludes by returning the focus back to teachers and considers the so-called teacher resistance to change. The book will be an essential purchase for academics and research students engaged in the fields of classroom teaching, teacher education and curriculum and will also be of interest to academics, aid officials, and decision-makers in developing countries.

Book Education and Ethno Politics

Download or read book Education and Ethno Politics written by Kelsey Shanks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iraqi Disputed Territories consist of 15 districts stretching across four northern governorates. While an administrative solution for the disputed territories remains evasive, minority groups across the region have been pulled into a clash over demographic composition as each disputed district faces ethnically defined claims. Meanwhile, inter-ethnic communal tensions are rising and questions of identity increasingly overshadow day-to-day life. There has been little research on the impact of heightened identity politics on the everyday lives of citizens. Regardless of the final administrative outcome, the multi-ethnic population of the region requires services and systems of co-existence, and in the fragile ethno-political environment of the disputed territories, the way in which the education system manages ethnic diversity is crucial. It is within this context that Education and Ethno-Politics examines the development of education systems across the region post 2003. Drawing on over 50 interviews with regional education officials and community representatives, the book presents the impact of amplified ethno-politics on the reconstruction of education in Iraq. It provides the first academic exploration into education in the region, exploring the significance of cultural reproduction and the link between demands for ethnically specific education, societal security and the wider political contestation over the territory. A comprehensive analysis of the powerful role of education in identity-based conflicts, this book offers a highly insightful examination of Iraq’s past and present, as well as formulating policy recommendations for its future. It is an essential resource for students, scholars and policy makers with focus on the Middle East, specifically Iraqi and Kurdish studies, as well as those interested in Education policy and Conflict studies.

Book Cultural Cleansing in Iraq

Download or read book Cultural Cleansing in Iraq written by Raymond W. Baker and published by Pluto Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the invasion of Iraq result in cultural destruction and killings of intellectuals? Convention sees accidents of war and poor planning in a campaign to liberate Iraqis. The authors argue instead that the invasion aimed to dismantle the Iraqi state to remake it as a client regime. Post-invasion chaos created conditions under which the cultural foundations of the state could be undermined. The authors painstakingly document the consequences of the occupiers' willful inaction and worse, which led to the ravaging of one of the world's oldest recorded cultures. Targeted assassination of over 400 academics, kidnapping and the forced flight of thousands of doctors, lawyers, artists and other intellectuals add up to cultural cleansing. This important work lays to rest claims that the invasion aimed to free an educated population to develop its own culture of democracy.

Download or read book Why We Lost written by Daniel P. Bolger and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2014 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-ranking general's gripping insider account of the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how it all went wrong. Over a thirty-five-year career, Daniel Bolger rose through the army infantry to become a three-star general, commanding in both theaters of the U.S. campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. He participated in meetings with top-level military and civilian players, where strategy was made and managed. At the same time, he regularly carried a rifle alongside rank-and-file soldiers in combat actions, unusual for a general. Now, as a witness to all levels of military command, Bolger offers a unique assessment of these wars, from 9/11 to the final withdrawal from the region. Writing with hard-won experience and unflinching honesty, Bolger makes the firm case that in Iraq and in Afghanistan, we lost -- but we didn't have to. Intelligence was garbled. Key decision makers were blinded by spreadsheets or theories. And, at the root of our failure, we never really understood our enemy. Why We Lost is a timely, forceful, and compulsively readable account of these wars from a fresh and authoritative perspective.

Book Reimagining Research for Reclaiming the Academy in Iraq Identities and Participation in Post Conflict Enquiry

Download or read book Reimagining Research for Reclaiming the Academy in Iraq Identities and Participation in Post Conflict Enquiry written by Heather Brunskell-Evans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-30 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is without doubt one of the most important publications that I have read for a very long time. These stories by Iraqi scholars raise many important insights, issues and questions. Their accounts provide some chilling insights into the terrible forms of oppression and discrimination that are part of the barriers to the realisation of an inclusive and creative development. It is extremely difficult to appreciate the pain and suffering that has been an integral part of their lives. Their accounts are readable and refreshingly honest. I do believe that there is a moral responsibility for all members of departments in universities to read and discuss this book as a matter of urgency. This needs to be done in terms of what we can learn about Iraq and in turn, to critically examine our own current conditions, relations, policies and practices, so that we can also struggle for a more inclusive system of educational provision and practice in higher education.
