Book Flight of the Patriot

Download or read book Flight of the Patriot written by Yadollah Sharifirad and published by Dundurn.com. This book was released on 2010-04-17 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a gripping, page-turning memoir of a US-trained Iranian fighter pilot who flew in the Shah of Iran’s and the Ayatollah Khomeini’s air force. Sharifirad was shot down in the Iraqi-Iranian war in the early 1990s. Saved by a group of local Kurds, he returned to Iran where he became a national hero. A movie, called Eagles, based on his rescue, was made in Iran in 1984. Sharifirad’s story was also published in Iran in a book called Crash on the Fortieth Mission. Shortly after his return to Iran, the Ayatollah sent him to Pakistan as military attaché. When he returned toTeheran, he was accused of being a CIA spy and was imprisoned, interrogated, and tortured. Sharifirad served a prison term and upon his release, despite constant surveillance, managed to smuggle his family out of the country. Eventually, he too managed a harrowing escape from Iran via Turkey to Canada, where he now lives with his family in Vancouver. The book also provides an absorbing historical and cultural backdrop to Iran.

It will consider key engagements and the central figures involved, illustrating the realities, successes and failures of the Iranian air campaign.

Download or read book Immortals of the Sky written by Colonel F Izadseta and published by Palmetto Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating memoir chronicles the experiences of Colonel F. Izadseta, a senior Iranian Air Force commander who spent many years serving in the pre-revolutionary Imperial Iranian Air Force, witnessing its buildup during the 1960s and 1970s, and its near destruction after the 1979 revolution. He tells of navigating the rocky political climate during the 1980s' Iran-Iraq war, while helping his country stand up to the Iraqi invasion and turn what could have been a week-long defeat into a stalemate that ultimately took eight years-the longest conventional war of the 20th century. His memoir is a very rare, open and candid tell-all from a high-ranking Iranian officer involved in the many fateful decisions made in an adverse environment where the government did not trust (and was actively sabotaging) its own military, despite the country being under attack. Colonel Izadseta takes the reader right into command headquarters where chaos was unfolding and commanders were facing incredible difficulties-international disapproval, domestic oppression, and even imprisonment by their own government. Colonel Izadseta was among a handful of highly-trained and dedicated officers who found themselves in an impossible and isolated situation, but were able to rise above the politics and insanity of the day to find a way to defend and serve their country-surprising everyone, including themselves. The Iranian government has since gone through every effort to suppress their story and their voices. This is the first time a senior Iranian Air Force commander is heard on the record telling the whole story. Readers interested in the modern history of the Middle East, plus those who have been involved in wars in the region and are curious about the context and background of how that situation came to be, as well as military aviation enthusiasts, and readers from Iran and neighboring countries who were deeply affected by these events but never heard the true story, are all sure to find this a must-read book.

Book A Concise History of the U S Air Force

Download or read book A Concise History of the U S Air Force written by Stephen Lee McFarland and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1997 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Except in a few instances, since World War II no American soldier or sailor has been attacked by enemy air power. Conversely, no enemy soldier orsailor has acted in combat without being attacked or at least threatened by American air power. Aviators have brought the air weapon to bear against enemies while denying them the same prerogative. This is the legacy of the U.S. AirForce, purchased at great cost in both human and material resources.More often than not, aerial pioneers had to fight technological ignorance, bureaucratic opposition, public apathy, and disagreement over purpose.Every step in the evolution of air power led into new and untrodden territory, driven by humanitarian impulses; by the search for higher, faster, and farther flight; or by the conviction that the air way was the best way. Warriors have always coveted the high ground. If technology permitted them to reach it, men, women andan air force held and exploited it-from Thomas Selfridge, first among so many who gave that "last full measure of devotion"; to Women's Airforce Service Pilot Ann Baumgartner, who broke social barriers to become the first Americanwoman to pilot a jet; to Benjamin Davis, who broke racial barriers to become the first African American to command a flying group; to Chuck Yeager, a one-time non-commissioned flight officer who was the first to exceed the speed of sound; to John Levitow, who earned the Medal of Honor by throwing himself over a live flare to save his gunship crew; to John Warden, who began a revolution in air power thought and strategy that was put to spectacular use in the Gulf War.Industrialization has brought total war and air power has brought the means to overfly an enemy's defenses and attack its sources of power directly. Americans have perceived air power from the start as a more efficient means of waging war and as a symbol of the nation's commitment to technology to master challenges, minimize casualties, and defeat adversaries.
