Download or read book Epiphenomenal Mind written by William S. Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to epiphenomenalism, our behavior is caused by events in our brains that also cause our mentality. This resulting mentality reflects our brains’ organization, but does not in turn cause anything. This book defends an epiphenomenalist account of philosophy of mind. It builds on the author’s previous work by moving beyond a discussion of sensations to apply an epiphenomenalist outlook to other aspects of mental causation such as beliefs, desires, pleasure, and displeasure. The first four chapters of the book argue for a dualistic theory of sensations and develop an epiphenomenalist version of dualism. The remaining chapters discuss propositional attitudes and valence. The author also responds to potential objections to epiphenomenalism by considering how sensations, intelligence, or understanding might be built into a robot. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in philosophy of mind who are interested in consciousness, mental causation, and how our mentality is situated in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a century and a half after its founding, the Iowa State Fair is the state's central institution, event, and symbol. During its annual run each August, the fair attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors who make the pilgrimage to the fairground to see the iconic butter cow, to ride the Old Mill, to walk through the livestock barns, and to people-watch. At the same time that they enjoy fried candy bars and roller coasters, Iowans also compete to raise the best corn and zucchinis, to make the best jams and jellies, to rear the finest sheep and goats, the largest cattle and hogs, and the handsomest horses. This tension between entertainment and agriculture goes back all the way to the fair's founding in the mid-1800s, as historian Chris Rasmussen shows in this thought-provoking history. The fair's founders had lofty aims: they sought to improve agriculture and foster a distinctively democratic American civilization. But from the start these noble intentions jostled up against people's desire to have fun and make money, honestly or otherwise--not least because the fair had to pay for itself. In short, the Iowa State Fair has as much to tell us about human nature and American history as it does about growing corn.

Book excerpt: His training began in the backyard. The old chocolate lab just sat and watched his young prodigy track the pheasant wing tied to a fishing pole with a silent smile. This kid had talent, but he lacked concentration needed for the task at hand. The puppy tried to listen, but bugs, pretty flowers, and lots of interesting things to taste made the lessons difficult. The message deep within his soul made him listen and concentrate. The smell, the stalk, and flush were practiced many times on the old lab. The puppy made a silent point with muscles quivering; slow, cautious steps to prevent the old dog from hearing him; a sudden rush when released to flush the bird or in this case the lab. 'Pretty good kid,' the lab responded with a nip to the puppy's ear after his tail had been bitten. 'Pretty good for the backyard, but real bird hunting is a whole different world.' Iowa is a place like no other. Most Iowans will give a person any thing they have that is needed. They will argue and fight over their favorite college team, and they will be there during any family tragedy. Welcome toA Midwestern State of Mind.

Book excerpt: For most Americans, Iowa brings to mind endless acres of corn fields, one of the country’s longest-running state fairs, and American Gothic, but few may know how it serendipitously became the birthplace of the most iconic apple, why thousands of cyclists brave the Midwestern heat and humidity to cross the entire state one week each year, or how a former Des Moines sports announcer became one of the White House’s most popular residents. It Happened in Iowa goes behind the scenes to tell these stories and many more, in short episodes that reveal the intriguing people and events that have shaped the Hawkeye State.
