Book Ionic Transport Processes

Download or read book Ionic Transport Processes written by Kyösti Kontturi and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling of heterogeneous processes, such as electrochemical reactions, extraction or ion-exchange, usually requires solving the transport problem associated to the process. Since the processes at the phase boundary are described by scalar quantities and transport quantities are vectors or tensors, coupling of them can take place only via conservation of mass, charge or momentum. In this book, transport of ionic species is addressed in a versatile manner, emphasizing the mutual coupling of fluxes in particular. Treatment is based on the formalism of irreversible thermodynamics, i.e. on linear (ionic) phenomenological equations, from which the most frequently used Nernst-Planck equation is derived. Limitations and assumptions made are thoroughly discussed. The Nernst-Planck equation is applied to selected problems at the electrodes and in membranes. Mathematical derivations are presented in detail so that the reader can learn the methodology of solving transport problems. Each chapter contains a large number of exercises, some of them more demanding than others.

Book Ion Exchange Membrane Separation Processes

Download or read book Ion Exchange Membrane Separation Processes written by H Strathmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-01-29 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, membranes and membrane processes are used as efficient tools for the separation of liquid mixtures or gases in the chemical and biomedical industry, in water desalination and wastewater purification. Despite the fact that various membrane processes, like reverse osmosis, are described in great detail in a number of books, processes involving ion-exchange membranes are only described in a fragmented way in scientific journals and patents; even though large industrial applications, like electrodialysis, have been around for over half a century. Therefore, this book is emphasizing on the most relevant aspects of ion-exchange membranes. This book provides a comprehensive overview of ion-exchange membrane separation processes covering the fundamentals as well as recent developments of the different products and processes and their applications. The audience for this book is heterogeneous, as it includes plant managers and process engineers as well as research scientists and graduate students. The separate chapters are based on different topics. The first chapter describes the relevant Electromembrane processes in a general overview. The second chapter explains thermodynamic and physicochemical fundamentals. The third chapter gives information about ion-exchange membrane preparation techniques, while the fourth and fifth chapter discusses the processes as unit operations giving examples for the design of specific plants. - First work on the principles and applications of electrodialysis and related separation processes - Presently no other comprehensive work that can serve as both reference work and text book is available - Book is suited for teaching students and as source for detailed information

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth Falk Symposium devoted to the study of intestinal abso~ l 3 tion. As in the case of its predecessors - , I hope that the relaxed atmosphere will enable the participants from all comers of the world to exchange views, not only in this room, but also at less formal moments in the cellar, on the lake, or in the buses that transport us to different parts of the Schwarzwald. We are all eternally grateful to Dr Herbert Falk for undertaking to sponsor this meeting, and to him and his staff for the impeccable organisation which will permit us to work in such a pleasant environment. In the organisation of the programme, one or two innovations have been in troduced which are perhaps foreign to routine gastroenterological meetings. First, the average age in this room is rather lower than at most gatherings of this nature, which means that those who carry out the experiments will be responsible for their presentation; they are after all the ones who have made the relevant small observations which lead to the advancement of knowledge.

Book Ion Transport

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Keeling
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483265668
  • Pages : 413 pages

Download or read book Ion Transport written by David Keeling and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion Transport is a collection of papers from the Smith Kline & French Research "Symposium on Ion Transport" held in Cambridge, on April 12-14, 1989. These papers focus on the plasma membrane, particularly on the three main classes of transporters, namely, pumps, exchangers, and channels. Some papers discuss the different experimental approaches from electrophysiological and ion flux measurements through pharmacology, molecular biology, electrostatics, and computer modeling. Other papers discuss the P-type cation pump, a class of ATP-driven ion pumps, which is determined from its subunit composition and from the results of the hydrolysis of ATP. Several papers explain the techniques used in ion channels and their modulation. These techniques can be used in the voltage-gated Na+ channel or in permeation mechanisms. Other papers examine the transport proteins involved in the physiology of ion transport. Ions and fluid transport relate to, at the molecular level, how ions cross membranes. A minimum model, in conjunction with theoretical perspective, can describe the mechanism by which ions move through channels. This collection can prove beneficial for biochemists, micro-biologists, cellular researchers, and academicians involved in the study of cellular biology or biophysics.

Download or read book Fast Ion Transport in Solids written by B. Scrosati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main motivation for the organization of the Advanced Research Workshop in Belgirate was the promotion of discussions on the most recent issues and the future perspectives in the field of Solid State lonics. The location was chosen on purpose since Belgirate was the place were twenty years ago, also then under the sponsorship of NATO, the very first international meeting on this important and interdisciplinary field took place. That meeting was named "Fast Ion Transport in Solids" and gathered virtually everybody at that time having been active in any aspect of motion of ions in solids. The original Belgirate Meeting made for the first time visible the technological potential related to the phenomenon of the fast ionic transport in solids and, accordingly, the field was given the name "Solid State lonics". This field is now expanded to cover a wide range of technologies which includes chemical sensors for environmental and process control, electrochromic windows, mirrors and displays, fuel cells, high performance rechargeable batteries for stationary applications and electrotraction, chemotronics, semiconductor ionics, water electrolysis cells for hydrogen economy and other applications. The main idea for holding an anniversary meeting was that of discussing the most recent issues and the future perspectives of Solid State lonics just twenty years after it has started at the same location on the lake Maggiore in North Italy.

Download or read book Algebraic Multigrid for the Multi ion Transport and Reaction Model written by Peter Thum and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2012 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
