Book Surface Modification and Alloying

Download or read book Surface Modification and Alloying written by J.M. Poate and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of the NATO institute on surface modification which was held in Trevi, 1981. Surface modification and alloying by ion, electron or laser beams is proving to be one of the most burgeoning areas of materials science. The field covers such diverse areas as integrated circuit processing to fabricating wear and corrosion resistant surfaces on mechanical components. The common scientific questions of interest are the microstructures by the different energy deposition techniques. and associated physical properties produced The chapters constitute a critical review of the various subjects covered at Trevi. Each chapter author took responsibility for the overall review and used contributions from the many papers presented at the meeting; each participant gave a presentation. The contributors are listed at the start of each chapter. We took this approach to get some order in a large and diverse field. We are indebted to all the contributors, in particular the chapter authors for working the many papers into coherent packages; to Jim Mayer for hosting a workshop of chapter authors at Cornell and to Ian Bubb who did a sterling job in working over some of the manuscripts. Our special thanks are due to the text processing center at Bell Labs who took on the task of assembling the book. In particular Karen Lieb and Beverly Heravi typed the whole manuscript and had the entire book phototypeset using the Bell Laboratories UNIXTM system.

Book Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials

Download or read book Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials written by Miran Mozetič and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected contributions on surface modification to improve the properties of solid materials. The surface properties are tailored either by functionalization, etching, or deposition of a thin coating. Functionalization is achieved by a brief treatment with non-equilibrium gaseous plasma containing suitable radicals that interact chemically with the material surface and thus enable the formation of rather stable functional groups. Etching is performed in order to modify the surface morphology. The etching parameters are selected in such a way that a rich morphology of the surfaces is achieved spontaneously on the sub-micrometer scale, without using masks. The combination of adequate surface morphology and functionalization of materials leads to superior surface properties which are particularly beneficial for the desired response upon incubation with biological matter. Alternatively, the materials are coated with a suitable thin film that is useful in various applications from food to aerospace industries.

This book was released on 1986-02-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of atomic, molecular, and optical physics (AMO physics) are to elucidate the fundamental laws of physics, to understand the structure of matter and how matter evolves at the atomic and molecular levels, to understand light in all its manifestations, and to create new techniques and devices. AMO physics provides theoretical and experimental methods and essential data to neighboring areas of science such as chemistry, astrophysics, condensed-matter physics, plasma physics, surface science, biology, and medicine. It contributes to the national security system and to the nation's programs in fusion, directed energy, and materials research. Lasers and advanced technologies such as optical processing and laser isotope separation have been made possible by discoveries in AMO physics, and the research underlies new industries such as fiber-optics communications and laser-assisted manufacturing. These developments are expected to help the nation to maintain its industrial competitiveness and its military strength in the years to come. This report describes the field, characterizes recent advances, and identifies current frontiers of research.

Book Surface Engineering

Download or read book Surface Engineering written by R. Kossowsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years there has been increasing need for systematic and straregically designed experiments of surface morphology evolution resulting form ion bombardment induced sputtering. Although there is an impressive number of investi gations {1} concerned with semiconductor materials as a result of immediate applications, the most systematic investigations have been conducted with fcc metals with particular interest on single crystal Cu {2,3}. Evidence now exists that within certain para meters (i. e ion species (Ar+), ion energy (20-44 KeV), substrate 2 temperature (80-550° K), dose rate (100-500 gA cm- ) , residual x 5 9 pressure (5 10- to 5x10- mm Hg) and polar and azimuthal angle of ion incidence {4} reproducible surface morphology (etch pits and pyramids) is achieved on the (11 3 1) specific crystallographic orientation. The temporal development of individual surface features was alsoobserved in this laterstudy {4}, by employing an in situ ion source in the scanning electron microscope at Salford, a technique also empolyed in studies of the influence of polar angle of ion incidence {5} and surface contaminants {6} on the topographyof Ar+ bombarded Si. Studies have also been made on the variation of incident ion species with the (11 3 1) Cu surface and it was fully recognized {7} that residual surface contaminants when present could playa major role in dictating the morhological evolution.

Book Effect of Ion Irradiation on the Properties of Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Effect of Ion Irradiation on the Properties of Metals and Alloys written by Piotr Budzyński and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the interaction between ions and metallic targets as well as energy loss processes during ion implantation and irradiation. Ion bombardments of targets cause changes in surface layer chemical composition, radiation defect formation, sputtering, blistering, swelling and ion mixing. These effects modify surface topography, crystalline structure, electrical and tribological properties of metals and alloys. The book presents research on the effects of the implantation and irradiation on the friction and wear of modified materials, as well as practical applications of ion implantation and irradiation. It offers a review of current problems related to the modification of materials via irradiation. In addition, computer programs for modeling the depth of ions and vacancies in a sample are presented, and potential causes of disagreement between modeling and experimental results are described. Finally, the book provides evidence of the long-range effect. Effect of Ion Irradiation on the Properties of Metals and Alloys is aimed at academics investigating the properties of metals and alloys after irradiation and/or implantation as well as for students of engineering and physical and chemical sciences. The book is also useful for those looking for up-to-date information on these methods and ways of solving related problems, and for designers of equipment used in places exposed to high ion irradiation or to cosmic space.
