Book Review of Colour Removal Technology in the Pulp and Paper Industry

Download or read book Review of Colour Removal Technology in the Pulp and Paper Industry written by R. J. Rush and published by Water Pollution Control Directorate : Supply and Services Canada. This book was released on 1976 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pulp and paper industry produces large volumes of effluent containing, among other things, dark brown lignin and lignin degradation products. The exact nature of the chromophoric (colour causing) groups in the wastes and the effects of these colour bodies on the aquatic environment are not known. However, developmental work on several processes for colour reduction has reached full scale application and colour removal is now required in many local areas for various reasons. Colour reduction can be achieved by either technical changes within the mill or by effluent treatment systems. In-plant modification can range from simple, inexpensive measures such as pulp washing and better "housekeeping" practices, to complex technological changes such as implementation of oxygen bleaching. While in-plant changes should be considered and implemented as a first preference, external treatment may often still be required. There are a large number of external treatment methods which are known to be technically feasible for colour removal from pulp and paper mill effluents.

Book Advanced Physicochemical Treatment Processes

Download or read book Advanced Physicochemical Treatment Processes written by Lawrence K. Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-10 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past thirty years have witnessed a growing worldwide desire that po- tive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degr- ing effects of all forms of pollution—air, water, soil, and noise. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been id- tified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it ava- able? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers f- mulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of en- ronmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establi- ment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

Book Bleach Plant Effluents from the Pulp and Paper Industry

Download or read book Bleach Plant Effluents from the Pulp and Paper Industry written by Pratima Bajpai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-22 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers bleach plant effluents, that most polluting effluent from the pulp and paper industry. Disappearance of benthic invertebrates, a high incidence of fish diseases, and mutagenic effects on the aquatic fauna are some of the consequences of the disposal of bleach effluents into surface waters. This book describes environmental impact of bleach plant effluents, environmental regulations, and measures to reduce the pollution load by internal process modification and external treatment of bleach plant effluents.

Book Industrial Biotechnology

Download or read book Industrial Biotechnology written by Indu Shekhar Thakur and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2013-12-30 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last five decades have witnessed a tremendous upsurge in the amount of xenobiotic compounds in the environment by industrial activities, some of them being highly toxic, recalcitrant with high bio-accumulating and bio-magnification properties. Whilst biotechnology is the development of products or processes using plants, animals or micro-organisms, ''Environmental Biotechnology'' is the multidisciplinary integration of sciences and engineering to utilise the huge biochemical potential of microorganisms and plants for the sustenance of resources. Recent advances in biotechnology have driven forward the harnessing of micro-organisms and plants to help and protect our fragile environment and formation of ecofriendly products. The aim of this book is to determine the processes and utilization of raw materials in the industries, formation and release of pollutants (air, water and soil) in the environment, effect and impact of the pollutants on biotic and abiotic components of the environment and finally identifying the physical, chemical, biological and alternating methods for treatment of pollutants in the industrial effluents. Efforts have also been made to identify the methods for bioconversion and recovery of products from the effluents by biotechnological methods.
