Book Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating in a Toroidal Octupole

Download or read book Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating in a Toroidal Octupole written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 1 MW, 2 msec pulse of rf power at the ion cyclotron frequency (2.6 MHz) was used to heat the ions from less than 1 eV to approximately 350 eV in a toroidal octupole device. The ion temperature is limited by charge exchange loss and agrees quantitatively with theoretical predictions. No parametric decay waves, enhanced diffusion, or other deleterious effects except for a high neutral reflux are observed to accompany the heating.

Book High power Ion cyclotron Heating on the Levitated Octupole

Download or read book High power Ion cyclotron Heating on the Levitated Octupole written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments are underway in the Wisconsin Levitated Toroidal Octupole to create hot, dense plasmas to facilitate the study of .beta. limits and related phenomena such as Pfirsch-Schlueter and bootstrap currents. The question of ballooning mode instability limits on .beta. = 8 .pi.nk(T/sub i/+T/sub e/)/B2 is of general importance for all toroidal systems, and ICRF heating should permit study of high .beta. plasmas with lower collisionality and smaller gyroradii than those of the high .beta. gun-injected plasmas currently under study in the Octupole. To these ends we are developing sources capable of delivering 4 MW to the plasma (1.5 MW coupled to the plasma to date, the rest under development).

Book Plasma Heating and Losses in Toroidal Multipole Fields

Download or read book Plasma Heating and Losses in Toroidal Multipole Fields written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heating and loss of plasmas have been studied in three pulsed, toroidal multipole devices: a large levitated octupole, a small supported octupole and a very .small supported quadrupole. Plasmas are produced by gun injection and heated by electron and ion cyclotron resonance heating and ohmic heating. Electron cyclotron heating rates have been measured over a wide range of parameters, and the results are in quantitative agreement with stochastic heating theory. Electron cyclotron resonance heating produces ions with energies larger than predicted by theory. With the addition of a toroidal field, ohmic heating gives densities as high as 1013cm−3 in the toroidal quadrupole and 1012cm−3 in the small octupole. Plasma losses for n=5 x 109cm−3 plasmas are inferred from Langmuir probe and Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements, and measured with special striped collectors on the wall and rings. The loss to a levitated ring is measured using a modulated light beam telemeter. The confinement is better than Bohm but considerably worse than classical. Low frequency convective cells which are fixed in space are observed. These cells around the ring are diminished when a weak toroidal field is added, and loss collectors show a vastly reduced flux to the rings. Analysis of the spatial density profile shows features of B-independent diffusion. The confinement is sensitive to some kinds of dc field errors, but surprisingly insensitive to perturbations of the ac confining field.
