Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main motivation for the organization of the Advanced Research Workshop in Belgirate was the promotion of discussions on the most recent issues and the future perspectives in the field of Solid State lonics. The location was chosen on purpose since Belgirate was the place were twenty years ago, also then under the sponsorship of NATO, the very first international meeting on this important and interdisciplinary field took place. That meeting was named "Fast Ion Transport in Solids" and gathered virtually everybody at that time having been active in any aspect of motion of ions in solids. The original Belgirate Meeting made for the first time visible the technological potential related to the phenomenon of the fast ionic transport in solids and, accordingly, the field was given the name "Solid State lonics". This field is now expanded to cover a wide range of technologies which includes chemical sensors for environmental and process control, electrochromic windows, mirrors and displays, fuel cells, high performance rechargeable batteries for stationary applications and electrotraction, chemotronics, semiconductor ionics, water electrolysis cells for hydrogen economy and other applications. The main idea for holding an anniversary meeting was that of discussing the most recent issues and the future perspectives of Solid State lonics just twenty years after it has started at the same location on the lake Maggiore in North Italy.

Book Science and Technology of Fast Ion Conductors

Download or read book Science and Technology of Fast Ion Conductors written by Harry L. Tuller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rediscovery of fast ion conduction in solids in the 1960's stimulated interest both in the scientific community in which the fundamentals of diffusion, order-disorder phenomena and crystal structure evaluation required re-examination, and in the technical community in which novel approaches to energy conversion and chemical sensing became possible with the introduction of the new field of "Solid State Ionics. " Because of both the novelty and the vitality of this field, it has grown rapidly in many directions. This growth has included the discovery of many new crystalline fast ion conductors, and the extension to the fields of organic and amorphous compounds. The growth has involved the extension of classical diffusion theory in an attempt to account for carrier interactions and the development of sophisticated computer models. Diffraction techniques have been refined to detect carrier distributions and anharmonic vibrations. Similar advances in the application of other techniques such as NMR, Raman, IR, and Impedance Spectroscopies to this field have also occurred. The applications of fast ion conducting solid electrolytes have also developed in many directions. High energy density Na/S batteries are now reaching the last stages of development, Li batteries are being implanted in humans for heart pacemakers, and solid state fuel cells are again being considered for future power plants. The proliferation of inexpensive microcomputers has stimulated the need for improved chemical sensors--a major application now being the zirconia auto exhaust sensor being sold by the millions each year.

Book Spillover and Mobility of Species on Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Spillover and Mobility of Species on Solid Surfaces written by A. Guerrero-Ruiz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-08-02 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Spillover and Mobility of Species and Solid Surfaces" collects the papers which were presented at the Fifth International Conference Spillover, either as oral or poster contributions, as well as the summaries of the invited lectures. This congress and its publication in the Studies on Surface Science and Catalysis series follow the tradition of previous conferences on spillover, initiated in Lyon, 1983, and continued in Leipzig, 1989, Kyoto 1993 and Dalian, 1997. For the fifth conference, held in S.L. el Escorial (Madrid), the organising committee has attempted to compile representative contributions which illustrate the advances in understanding the spillover phenomenon since 1997. Spillover is a process taking place during the interface of gas reactant molecules (mainly hydrogen and oxygen) on solid surfaces. However, different contributions to the more general area of the chemistry at surfaces, related with the mobility and migration of species, diffusion through membranes, fuel cell catalysts, etc., have also been included. In fact the title of the present volume summarizes this attempt to extend the conference topics towards dynamics at surfaces.Among the 70 contributions received, the 56 accepted papers were selected on the basis of the reports of at least two international reviewers, according to standards comparable to those applied for other specialised journals. These papers are from 21 different countries.

This book was released on 2000-10-27 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid state ionics, being a multidisciplinary area, is expected to grow at a faster rate in the new millennium, prompting the discovery of new materials and devices, as well as helping to optimize the known devices, especially the portable power sources and display systems. The Asian Society for Solid State Ionics (ASSSI) plays a significant role in bringing together researchers from the Asian countries, every two years, to exchange notes and ideas, to foster friendship and collaboration, and to discuss the prospects. The topics covered in this volume are: ion dynamics, theoretical modeling, ion-conducting polymers, gels and ceramics, glasses, crystalline materials including nano-phases, composites, electrode/electrolyte interfaces and novel experimental techniques. Papers on crystalline materials deal with ion conduction in Li, Na, Ag, Tl, F and O-containing compounds. Materials and device aspects have received wide coverage, especially the areas of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).Rechargeable high energy density LIBs, especially those employing immobilized gel or polymer electrolyte, are the favorite portable power sources in the new millennium. As expected, a large number of papers on both cathodes and polymer electrolytes for LIBs were presented at the conference. The papers on fuel cells almost exclusively deal with SOFCs, indicating the great importance being given to this area in Japan and China. A breakthrough in materials and technology of SOFC is expected in the coming decade. This volume will be useful not only to the active researchers in the field but also to youngsters entering the exciting area of solid state ionics.

Book An Introduction to Electronic and Ionic Materials

Download or read book An Introduction to Electronic and Ionic Materials written by Wei Gao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of electronic and ionic materials has grown rapidly over the last 20 to 30 years. The application of these materials has had a significant impact on modern industries and on society in general. The subject is so important that no electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, applied physics or chemistry degree would be complete without it. This valuable textbook is aimed at engineering and technology undergraduates who have a background in physics or chemistry only at first year level. It provides a basic understanding of the properties and uses of a wide range of electrically and ionically conducting materials. It is not intended to be a solid state physics or chemistry book, and so the mathematics is kept to a minimum. However, it is intended to give the student an overview of a wide range of electrical materials and their uses in today's society.
