This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a collection of papers presented at the 4th International Symposium on Analysis and Detection of Explosives held at the Mitzpeh Rachel Kibbutz Guesthouse in Jerusalem, September 7 to 10, 1992. The Symposium was attended by 150 participants from 20 countries and 50 lectures were given including 4 invited keynote lectures. The purpose of the Symposium, as the previous Symposia, was to present and to discuss new approaches, new applications, new methods and techniques in analysis and detection of explosives. The Symposium was, according to the feedback received from many participants, very successful and met the anticipated expectations. New collaborative initiatives between various laboratories from different countries were formed, which is a necessity in our common goals of law enforcement, aviation security and environmental quality, issues which are closely related to the analysis of explosives. I would like to extend my thanks to the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Israel National Police for sponsoring the Symposium, to the contributing Institutions and Agencies for making this Symposium financially possible, and to the members of the International Committee for helpful advice. I am most thankful to my colleagues from the Organizing Committee, especially Dr. Joseph Almog and Dr. Shmuel Zitrin from the Israel National Police, for helping in the organization of this Symposium.

Book Ion Chromatography and Ion Chromatography high Resolution Mass Spectrometry Technologies for the Analysis of Low order Explosive Residues

Download or read book Ion Chromatography and Ion Chromatography high Resolution Mass Spectrometry Technologies for the Analysis of Low order Explosive Residues written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined effect of temperature and organic solvent-containing eluents on IC selectivity is also presented for the first time and discussed regarding their use as variables in IC method development. Analytical performance characteristics for linearity, repeatability and limits of quantification are presented. Chapter 5 combines the organic solvent and temperatureenhanced IC method developed in Chapter 4 with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) detection which enabled simplified coupling of these two technologies. The method was applied to the forensic detection of loworder explosives in fingermarks for the first time, offering confirmatory analysis of several forensically important species at pg amounts. Analytical performance characteristics for linearity, repeatability and limits of quantification are once again presented and compared to the published literature. Chapter 6 presents results collected by capillary electrophoresis and Raman spectroscopy as alternative/complementary techniques to IC. These techniques are applied to the detection of explosive residues in biological matrices, and their relative merits are discussed. The development of several IC-based technologies enabled the successful interrogation of small anions in low-order explosives within fingermarks at fgng amounts for the first time, offering the potential to link identity with criminal activity. In particular, the development of a solvent enhanced-IC method with simplified coupling to HRMS shows considerable benefit not just for forensic purposes, but for IC applications in a number of alternative fields.

Book Analysis of Explosives by Liquid Chromatography Thermospray Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Analysis of Explosives by Liquid Chromatography Thermospray Mass Spectrometry written by DW. Berberich and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have investigated the application of liquid chromatography/thermospray/mass spectrometry (LC/TSP/MS) to the separation and identification of commercial and military explosives. The LC was performed using a reverse phase column with an isocratic mobile phase and a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min. These conditions resulted in retention times of less than 3 min for common explosives, permitting rapid analysis. The TSP was operated in the filamenton ionization mode which yielded unique spectra for the following explosive compounds: 1,3,5-trinitrotriazacyclohexane (RDX), 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,4,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX), trinitrotoluene (TNT), dinitrotoluene (DNT), pentaerythritoltetranitrate (PETN), nitroglycerin (NG), diphenylamine (DPA), and monomethylaminenitrate (MMAN) The majority of explosives yielded only negative ion thermospray mass spectra, which exhibited a strong [M + CH3COO]−; however, components of double-based smokeless powders also yielded positive ion spectra. An important forensic science application of this work is the identification of commercial and military explosives. Spectra which were obtained from the residues of improvised explosive devices of military C4 and a double-based smokeless powder allowed identification of the pure explosive compounds, LC/TSP(filament-on)/MS provided limits of detection less than 2.5 picograms for PETN.

Book Applications of LC MS in Environmental Chemistry

Download or read book Applications of LC MS in Environmental Chemistry written by Damia Barcelo and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-03-21 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the literature available, it is clear that there is a need for a book on LC-MS applications in environmental analysis. This book endeavours to answer the following questions: What interface to use to solve "my detection problem"? Can I obtain enough sensitivity for the confirmation of my compound in real-world environmental samples? Is there enough structural information? The present book aims to provide a critical evaluation of LC-MS in environmental chemistry and it is structured in different areas. Apart from an introductory section with fundamental aspects, application areas using the most relevant interfacing systems (PB, TSP, ES) for the characterization of environmental compounds are included. In this sense, applications are discussed on the characterization of the most relevant compounds of environmental interest such as pesticides, detergents, dyes, polar metabolites, waste streams, organotin compounds and marine toxins with comparison between different interfacing systems. Finally, new methods and strategies in LC-MS, e.g. the use of capillary electrophoresis, MS together with on-line post-column systems in LC-MS are also shown. By the nature of its content and written as it is by experienced practitioners, the book is intended to serve as a practical reference for analytical chemists who need to use LC-MS in environmental studies. Each chapter includes sufficient references to the literature to serve as a valuable starting point and also contains detailed investigations. The broad spectrum of the book and its application to environmental priority compounds makes it unique in many ways.

Book Aspects of Explosives Detection

Download or read book Aspects of Explosives Detection written by Maurice Marshall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detection and quantification of trace chemicals is a major thrust of analytical chemistry. In recent years much effort has been spent developing detection systems for priority pollutants. Less mature are the detections of substances of interest to law enforcement and security personnel:in particular explosives. This volume will discuss the detection of these, not only setting out the theoretical fundamentals, but also emphasizing the remarkable developments in the last decade. Terrorist events—airplanes blown out of the sky (PanAm 103 over Lockerbie) and attacks on U.S. and European cities (Trade Center in New York and the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, railways in London and Madrid)--emphasize the danger of concealed explosives. However, since most explosives release little vapor, it was not possible to detect them by technology used on most organic substances. After PanAm 103 was downed over Scotland, the U.S. Congress requested automatic explosive detection equipment be placed in airports. This volume outlines the history of explosive detection research, the developments along the way, present day technologies, and what we think the future holds. Written by experts in the field who set out both the scientific issues and the practical context with authority Discusses and describes the threat Describes the theoretical background and practical applications of both trace and bulk explosives detection

Book On site Analysis of Explosives in Various Matrices

Download or read book On site Analysis of Explosives in Various Matrices written by J. G. Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has developed several different strategies and technologies for the on-site detection of explosives. These on-site detection techniques include a colorimetric test, thin layer chromatography (TLC) kit and portable gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC/MS). The screening of suspicious containers on-site and the search for trace explosive residue in a post-blast forensic investigation are of great importance. For these reasons, LLNL's Forensic Science Center has developed a variety of fieldable detection technologies to screen for a wide range of explosives in various matrices and scenarios. Ideally, what is needed is a fast, accurate, easy-to-use, pocket-size and inexpensive field screening test for explosives.
