Download or read book Ion Beam Modification of Materials written by J.S. Williams and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference consisted of 15 oral sessions, including three plenary papers covering areas of general interest, 22 specialist invited papers and 51 contributed presentations as well as three poster sessions. There were several scientific highlights covering a diverse spectrum of materials and ion beam processing methods. These included a wide range of conventional and novel applications such as: optical displays and opto-electronics, motor vehicle and tooling parts, coatings tailored for desired properties, studies of fundamental defect properties, the production of novel (often buried) compounds, and treating biomedical materials. The study of nanocrystals produced by ion implantation in a range of host matrices, particularly for opto-electronics applications, was one especially new and exciting development. Despite several decades of study, major progress was reported at the conference in understanding defect evolution in semiconductors and the role of defects in transient impurity diffusion. The use of implantation to tune or isolate optical devices and in forming optically active centres and waveguides in semiconductors, polymers and oxide ceramics was a major focus of several presentations at the conference. The formation of hard coatings by ion assisted deposition or direct implantation was also an area which showed much recent progress. Ion beam techniques had also developed apace, particularly those based on plasma immersion ion implantation or alternative techniques for large area surface treatment. Finally, the use of ion beams for the direct treatment of cancerous tissue was a particularly novel and interesting application of ion beams.

Download or read book Beam Effects Surface Topography and Depth Profiling in Surface Analysis written by Alvin W. Czanderna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books are available that detail the basic principles of the different methods of surface characterization. On the other hand, the scientific literature provides a resource of how individual pieces of research are conducted by particular labo- tories. Between these two extremes the literature is thin but it is here that the present volume comfortably sits. Both the newcomer and the more mature scientist will find in these chapters a wealth of detail as well as advice and general guidance of the principal phenomena relevant to the study of real samples. In the analysis of samples, practical analysts have fairly simple models of how everything works. Superimposed on this ideal world is an understanding of how the parameters of the measurement method, the instrumentation, and the char- teristics of the sample distort this ideal world into something less precise, less controlled, and less understood. The guidance given in these chapters allows the scientist to understand how to obtain the most precise and understood measu- ments that are currently possible and, where there are inevitable problems, to have clear guidance as the extent of the problem and its likely behavior.
Download or read book Plasma Technology for Deposition and Surface Modification written by Mohammad Mokbul Hossain and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2009 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma processing is a high-technology discipline in tailoring surface properties and in obtaining functional polymers of advanced materials without changing the material's bulk. Comparing with solid polymeric materials, special care should be taken for surface activation of textiles due to their complex geometries. It was found that modification is strongly influenced by both plasma parameters and fabric structure. As compared to air, CO2, and water vapor, Ar/O2 and He/O2 mixtures were found to be very effective for surface hydrophilization of polyester textiles due to the long-lasting free radical lifetimes. The modified surfaces were not stable for a long time due to restructuring of the polar functional groups. Therefore, plasma coatings containing functional groups are required in order to obtain a permanent surface modification. Permanent nanoporous coatings were deposited in order to obtain functional surfaces which contain accessible functionalities within the entire coating volume. This novel approach is essentially based on a fine control of simultaneous deposition and etching processes during plasma co-polymerization of ammonia with hydrocarbons. A nanoporous structure with a large specific surface area was achieved that contained functional groups inside the coating volume, which were accessible to e.g. dye molecules, thus facilitating substrate independent dyeing. A permanent hydrophilic modification of material surfaces was obtained by introducing nitrogen polar functionalities, depending on the NH3 to hydrocarbon ratio, which is mostly due to a replacement of carbon in a-C: H: N films. This novel combination of polar groups with a suitable texturing realized within crosslinked aC: H: N coatings proved to be an efficient method providing a long-term mechanical stability of superhydrophilic coatings. Moreover, plasma coated material surfaces contain huge numbers of functional groups which can chemically interact with matrix materials and hence, yield strong covalent bond between fiber and matrix. The coatings show a large surface area which enhances the contact area and surface texturing and additionally promotes mechanical interlocking. Thus, the novel, developed nanoporous coatings represent a platform for diverse multifunctional applications in the surface enhancement of advanced material

Download or read book Erosion and Growth of Solids Stimulated by Atom and Ion Beams written by G. Kiriakidis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The members of the organising Committee and their colleagues have, for many years been investigating the evol ution of the fas'cinating surface features which develop during sputtering erosion of solids. Such experimental, theoretical and computational studies have also been carried out in many international laboratories and, as well as much cow~onality and agreement, substantial disagreements were unresolved. In view of the increasing importance of such processes in technological applications such as microlitho graphic etching for the patterning of solid state devices and in fusion technology it was felt opportune to hold a meeting in this area. Furthermore the use of energetic atomic and ion fluxes is also becoming of increasing importance in assisting or modifying the growth of thin films in a number of important industrial processes and it was therefore rational to combine the, study of both erosional and growth processes in a single meeting. These proceedings include 16 invited review and 15 oral or poster presented contributions to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on the "Erosion and Growth of Solids Stimulated by Atom and Ion Beams". The review contributions span the range from the fundamental concepts of ballistic sputtering, and how this influences surface morphology evolution, through processes involving entrapment of incident species to mechanisms involved in'the use of chemically reactive ion species. Further reviews outline the influence of energetic irradiation upon surface growth by atomic deposition whilst others discuss technologkal applications of both areas of growth and erosion.

Download or read book Sputtering by Particle Bombardment III written by Rainer Behrisch and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-09-10 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sputtering, the ejection of atoms or groups of atoms from the surface of a solid bombarded by energetic particles, is a widely observed phenomenon that has many applications in today's experimental physics and technology. This is the third and final volume of a comprehensive review on sputtering. Whereas the first two volumes deal primarily with physical aspects such as the theory of sputtering, experimentally observed sputtering yields and surface topography changes, this volume is devoted to the characteristic properties of the sputtered particles and technological applications of sputtering. The particles are characterized by their energy, mass, and angular distributions, along with their charge and excitation states, while the applications described in- clude surface and depth analysis, micromachining, and the production of surface coatings and thin films. As in the previous two volumes, the various chapters have been written by the main authorities in the field. The book addresses a broad audience: scientists active in the field will find the overview and background information they have long been seeking, while students and new comers to surface science and materials science will find a readable introduction to sputtering.

Download or read book Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials written by Miran Mozetič and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected contributions on surface modification to improve the properties of solid materials. The surface properties are tailored either by functionalization, etching, or deposition of a thin coating. Functionalization is achieved by a brief treatment with non-equilibrium gaseous plasma containing suitable radicals that interact chemically with the material surface and thus enable the formation of rather stable functional groups. Etching is performed in order to modify the surface morphology. The etching parameters are selected in such a way that a rich morphology of the surfaces is achieved spontaneously on the sub-micrometer scale, without using masks. The combination of adequate surface morphology and functionalization of materials leads to superior surface properties which are particularly beneficial for the desired response upon incubation with biological matter. Alternatively, the materials are coated with a suitable thin film that is useful in various applications from food to aerospace industries.
