Book Ion irradiation induced Densification of Zirconia Sol gel Thin Films

Download or read book Ion irradiation induced Densification of Zirconia Sol gel Thin Films written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have investigated the densification behavior of sol-gel zirconia films resulting from ion irradiation. Three sets of films were implanted with neon, krypton, or xenon. The ion energies were chosen to yield approximately constant energy loss through the film and the doses were chosen to yield similar nuclear energy deposition. Ion irradiation of the sol-gel films resulted in carbon and hydrogen loss as indicated by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and forward recoil energy spectroscopy. Although the densification was hypothesized to result from target atom displacement, the observed densification exhibits a stronger dependence on electronic energy deposition.

Book Ion Beam Modification of Materials

Download or read book Ion Beam Modification of Materials written by J.S. Williams and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference consisted of 15 oral sessions, including three plenary papers covering areas of general interest, 22 specialist invited papers and 51 contributed presentations as well as three poster sessions. There were several scientific highlights covering a diverse spectrum of materials and ion beam processing methods. These included a wide range of conventional and novel applications such as: optical displays and opto-electronics, motor vehicle and tooling parts, coatings tailored for desired properties, studies of fundamental defect properties, the production of novel (often buried) compounds, and treating biomedical materials. The study of nanocrystals produced by ion implantation in a range of host matrices, particularly for opto-electronics applications, was one especially new and exciting development. Despite several decades of study, major progress was reported at the conference in understanding defect evolution in semiconductors and the role of defects in transient impurity diffusion. The use of implantation to tune or isolate optical devices and in forming optically active centres and waveguides in semiconductors, polymers and oxide ceramics was a major focus of several presentations at the conference. The formation of hard coatings by ion assisted deposition or direct implantation was also an area which showed much recent progress. Ion beam techniques had also developed apace, particularly those based on plasma immersion ion implantation or alternative techniques for large area surface treatment. Finally, the use of ion beams for the direct treatment of cancerous tissue was a particularly novel and interesting application of ion beams.

Book Effects of Ion Irradiation on the Surface Mechanical Behavior of Hybrid Sol gel Derived Silicate Thin Films

Download or read book Effects of Ion Irradiation on the Surface Mechanical Behavior of Hybrid Sol gel Derived Silicate Thin Films written by Rudy Ghisleni and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in hardness of hybrid sol-gel films following ion irradiation was linked to structural changes. Ion irradiation results in a cross-linked silica film as well as the segregation of amorphous carbon clusters, both of which contributed to increase the mechanical properties of the films.

Book Densification and Crystallization of Zirconia Thin Films Prepared by Sol gel Processing

Download or read book Densification and Crystallization of Zirconia Thin Films Prepared by Sol gel Processing written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have investigated the effects of precursor nature and heat treatment schedule on the densification and crystallization behavior of sol-gel derived zirconia thin films. Precursor solutions were prepared from n-propanol, zirconium (IV) n-propoxide, and either acetic acid, or 2,4-pentanedione (acac) and water additions. By controlling the ligand type and ligand-to-metal ratio, we were able to prepare films which displayed significant differences in densification behavior. We attribute the dissimilarity in densification to variations in the nature of the as-deposited films, as influenced by ligand type and concentration. While the acac- derived film was a physical gel, (i.e., a physical aggregation of the oligomeric species), the acetic acid-derived film, which exhibited less consolidation, was a chemical gel that could not be redissolved in the parent solvent. Films prepared with large acac/metal ratios and small water additions exhibited minimal crosslinking at 25°C, displayed the greatest consolidation ((approximately)86% shrinkage) and the highest refractive index (n = 2.071) when heat treated. These results indicate the importance that M-O-M bonds (crosslinks) formed at low temperature can have on densification behavior. We also report on the effects of heat-treatment schedules and ramp rates on densification behavior. All of the films of the present study crystallized into the cubic phase, at temperatures ranging from (approximately)400°C to greater than 700°C, depending on the heating rate.

Book Sol Gel Spin Coating Growth Of Gallium Nitride Thin Films A Simple Safe and Cheap Approach Penerbit USM

Download or read book Sol Gel Spin Coating Growth Of Gallium Nitride Thin Films A Simple Safe and Cheap Approach Penerbit USM written by Fong Chee Yong and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on 2019 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide direct band gap gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor has received significant attention as an ideal material for various applications in the optoelectronic devices. One major use of GaN is the development of energy-efficient solid state light-emitting diodes. Currently, most commercially available GaN semiconductor are produced through advanced deposition techniques which involve sophisticated technologies and are relatively expensive and complicated to setup. As an alternative, the sol-gel spin coating method, which is relatively simpler, cheaper, safer, and more scalable was proposed. In this book, the process route and recipe for producing highly c-oriented crystalline GaN thin films via the sol-gel spin coating approach were described in detail. Some insights into the factors affecting the surface morphology as well as structural and optical properties of the deposited films were presented. Eventually, this book could inspire further studies into the development of low-cost GaN thin films.
