Most of the wastewater was injected directly to the Snake River Plain aquifer through a 598-ft-deep disposal well or was discharged to unlined disposal ponds. Because of its 15.7 million-year half-life, iodine-129 is a permanent environmental pollutant. In 1990--1991, water samples were collected from 51 wells that obtain water from the aquifer and analyzed for iodine- 129. The water samples were analyzed using the AMS method. The detection limit for this method is from two to six orders of magnitude more sensitive than the detection limit for neutron-activation method, which was used for samples collected in 1977, 1981, and 1986. Because of the more sensitive method detection limit, iodine-129 was detected in water from a larger number of wells distributed over a larger area.

Almost all of this wastewater was discharged at or near the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center (INTEC) on the INL site. Most of the wastewater was discharged directly into the eastern Snake River Plain aquifer through a deep disposal well until 1984; however, some wastewater also was discharged into unlined infiltration ponds or leaked from distribution systems below the INTEC.
