Book excerpt: Firsthand perspectives on the past, present, and future of contemporary Italian philosophy. Through conversations with twenty-three leading Italian philosophers representing a variety of scholarly concerns and methodologies, this volume offers an informal overview of the background, breadth, and distinctiveness of contemporary Italian philosophy as a tradition. The conversations begin with general questions addressing issues of provenance, domestic and foreign influences, and lineages. Next, each scholar discusses the main tenets, theoretical originality, and timeliness of their work. The interviews conclude with thoughts about what directions each philosopher sees the discipline heading in the future. Every conversation is a testimony to the differences that characterize each thinker as unique and that invigorate the Italian philosophical landscape as a whole. The individual replies differ widely in tone, focus, and style. What emerges is a broad, deep, lively, and even witty picture of the Italian philosophical landscape in the voices of its protagonists.

Book Syntagmatia

Download or read book Syntagmatia written by Dirk Sacré and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective volume has been dedicated to two distinguished scholars of Neo-Latin Studies on the occasion of their retirement after a long and fruitful academic career, one at the Université catholique Louvain-la-Neuve, the other at the internationally renowned Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae of Leuven University. Both the rich variety of subjects dealt with and the international diversity of the scholars authoring contributions reflect the wide interests of the celebrated Neo-Latinists, their international position, and the actual status of the discipline itself. Ranging from the Trecento to the 21st century, and embracing Latin writings from Italy, Hungary, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland, the New World, Spain, Scotland, Denmark and China, this volume is as rich and multifaceted as it is voluminous, for it not only offers studies on well-known figures such as Petrarch, Lorenzo Valla, Erasmus, Vives, Thomas More, Eobanus Hessus, Lipsius, Tycho Brahe, Jean de la Fontaine and Jacob Cats, but it also includes new contributions on Renaissance commentaries and editions of classical authors such as Homer, Seneca and Horace; on Neo-Latin novels, epistolography and Renaissance rhetoric; on Latin translations from the vernacular and invectives against Napoleon; on the teaching of Latin in the 19th century; and on the didactics of Neo-Latin nowadays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical Humanities may be broadly conceptualized as a discipline wherein medicine and its specialties intersect with those of the humanities and social sciences. As such it is a hybrid area of study where the impact of disease and healing science on culture is assessed and expressed in the particular language of the disciplines concerned with the human experience. However, as much as at first sight this definition appears to be clear, it does not reflect how the interaction of medicine with the humanities has evolved to become a separate field of study. In this publication we have explored, through the analysis of a group of selected multidisciplinary essays, the dynamics of this process. The essays predominantly address the interaction of literature, philosophy, art, art history, ethics, and education with medicine and its specialties from the classical period to the present. Particular attention has been given to the Medieval, Early Modern, and Enlightenment periods. To avoid a rigid compartmentalization of the book based on individual fields of study we opted for a fluid division into multidisciplinary sections, reflective of the complex interactions of the included works with medicine.

Book Plant Life of the Dolomites

Download or read book Plant Life of the Dolomites written by Erika Pignatti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers distribution maps of over 2200 individual species living in the Dolomite area, presenting detailed records on the local range of every species growing in the area studied, from the Puster Valley to the Piave River. The data was collected on the basis of a multiple field observations carried out over several decades. After dividing the area into approx. 200 quadrants, a nearly complete census of the species present was obtained for each quadrant. The evaluation and synopsis of this extensive set of data, which is presented in the form of a chorological atlas in keeping with international standard methods, allows the area to be accurately compared with other parts of the Alps. In addition to the chorological atlas and floristic inventory, a list of synonyms and toponyms of the three languages used in the analyzed territory, an expanded list of updated scientific names, and some helpful remarks on various Dolomites species are included. Lastly, the book explores how species can be considered as landscape bioindicators. This third volume of the work Plant Life of the Dolomites complements the main volume Vegetation Structure and Ecology and the volume Vegetation Tables, which presents essential data at the plant association level.
