Book excerpt: In 2009, an international conference exploring models of statehood for Israel and Palestine was held at Toronto’s York University. The conference became a cause célèbre in Canada and Israel when extraordinary pressures were exerted on the conference organizers, their academic departments, and university administrators by pro-Israel lobby groups, private university donors, members of the academic community, and even the federal government. Although the conference itself was uneventful, the lead-up roiled Canadian academia and society, provoking a controversy that raised major issues regarding academic freedom. Unthinkable Thoughts covers the history of the events from the perspective of Susan Drummond, one of the conference organizers. First, she methodically examines the idea of constitutional bi-nationalism in Israel/Palestine, and explores why it is such a fraught, contentious notion. Drawing from copious documentation, including confidential communications accessed under Freedom of Information legislation, she then lays out the behind-the-scenes minutiae of statements made and decisions taken before and after the conference took place. This book serves as a cautionary tale of the ease with which matters of fundamental principle can become compromised in the face of intense social and political pressure.
Download or read book Information Systems Engineering written by Arne Soelvberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of subjects which the authors deem to be important for information systems engineers. The book is intended for introductory teaching. We have tried to write the book in such a way that students with only fragmented knowledge of computers are able to read the book without too many difficulties. Students who have had only an intro ductory course in computer programming should be able to read most of the book. We have tried to achieve simplicity without compromising on depth in our discussions of the various aspects of information systems engineering. So it is our hope that also those who have deeper knowledge in computing may find pleasure in reading parts of the book. The writing of a textbook is a major undertaking for its authors. One is quite often forced to reexamine truisms in the subject area, and must be prepared to reevaluate one's opinions and priorities as one learns more. In particular this is so in new fields, where formalisms have been scarcely used, and where consensus has not yet emerged either on what constitutes the subject area or on how practical problems within the field shall be approached. Contemporary practice in computer applications is confronted with an increasingly complex world, both in a technical sense and in the complexity of problems that are solved by computer.

Book excerpt: The definitive career guide for grad students, adjuncts, post-docs and anyone else eager to get tenure or turn their Ph.D. into their ideal job Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their Ph.D. And each year only a small percentage of them will land a job that justifies and rewards their investment. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts, and many more who simply give up in frustration. Those who do make it share an important asset that separates them from the pack: they have a plan. They understand exactly what they need to do to set themselves up for success. They know what really moves the needle in academic job searches, how to avoid the all-too-common mistakes that sink so many of their peers, and how to decide when to point their Ph.D. toward other, non-academic options. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help readers join the select few who get the most out of their Ph.D. As a former tenured professor and department head who oversaw numerous academic job searches, she knows from experience exactly what gets an academic applicant a job. And as the creator of the popular and widely respected advice site The Professor is In, she has helped countless Ph.D.’s turn themselves into stronger applicants and land their dream careers. Now, for the first time ever, Karen has poured all her best advice into a single handy guide that addresses the most important issues facing any Ph.D., including: -When, where, and what to publish -Writing a foolproof grant application -Cultivating references and crafting the perfect CV -Acing the job talk and campus interview -Avoiding the adjunct trap -Making the leap to nonacademic work, when the time is right The Professor Is In addresses all of these issues, and many more.

Download or read book An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics written by Béla Bajnok and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This undergraduate textbook promotes an active transition to higher mathematics. Problem solving is the heart and soul of this book: each problem is carefully chosen to demonstrate, elucidate, or extend a concept. More than 300 exercises engage the reader in extensive arguments and creative approaches, while exploring connections between fundamental mathematical topics. Divided into four parts, this book begins with a playful exploration of the building blocks of mathematics, such as definitions, axioms, and proofs. A study of the fundamental concepts of logic, sets, and functions follows, before focus turns to methods of proof. Having covered the core of a transition course, the author goes on to present a selection of advanced topics that offer opportunities for extension or further study. Throughout, appendices touch on historical perspectives, current trends, and open questions, showing mathematics as a vibrant and dynamic human enterprise. This second edition has been reorganized to better reflect the layout and curriculum of standard transition courses. It also features recent developments and improved appendices. An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics is ideal for those seeking a challenging and engaging transition to advanced mathematics, and will appeal to both undergraduates majoring in mathematics, as well as non-math majors interested in exploring higher-level concepts. From reviews of the first edition: Bajnok’s new book truly invites students to enjoy the beauty, power, and challenge of abstract mathematics. ... The book can be used as a text for traditional transition or structure courses ... but since Bajnok invites all students, not just mathematics majors, to enjoy the subject, he assumes very little background knowledge. Jill Dietz, MAA Reviews The style of writing is careful, but joyously enthusiastic.... The author’s clear attitude is that mathematics consists of problem solving, and that writing a proof falls into this category. Students of mathematics are, therefore, engaged in problem solving, and should be given problems to solve, rather than problems to imitate. The author attributes this approach to his Hungarian background ... and encourages students to embrace the challenge in the same way an athlete engages in vigorous practice. John Perry, zbMATH

Download or read book A Sustainable Tourism Workforce written by Shelagh Mooney and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together issues of social justice and the neglect of a sustainable orientation to the tourism workforce. This has resulted in an impoverished, unsustainable, and transient workforce that does not meet the aims of UN sustainable goals within the sector or indeed the UNTWO Code of ethics towards its employees. The introductory review and 15 chapters in this volume each make a unique and distinct contribution to knowledge. The opening review presents a critique of current definitions of sustainability in an employment, and specifically in a tourism employment context, acknowledging and critiquing extant literature. It uniquely recognises the themes submitted on the topic of sustainable work in the book, as well as those which comprise the final selection of chapters. These exercises culminate in the presentation of a refreshed conceptualisation of sustainable employment. The chapters were mapped onto a proposed conceptual framework, which recognises the multi-dimensional influences of the evolving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), recent Sustainable Human Resource Management (SHRM) and tourism literature, and fresh contributions to theory. Additionally, the introductory review offers concluding remarks that the authors hope will influence and guide future research endeavours. The book will be invaluable to educators, students and policymakers interested in information and guidance on managing sustainable tourism. Several chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

Download or read book The Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers Vol IX written by Marcus Garvey and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995-12-05 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Africa for the Africans" was the name given in Africa to the extraordinary black social protest movement led by Jamaican Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887-1940). Volumes I-VII of the Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers chronicled the Garvey movement that flourished in the United States during the 1920s. Now, the long-awaited African volumes of this edition (Volumes VIII and IX and a forthcoming Volume X) demonstrate clearly the central role Africans played in the development of the Garvey phenomenon. The African volumes provide the first authoritative account of how Africans transformed Garveyism from an external stimulus into an African social movement. They also represent the most extensive collection of documents ever gathered on the early African nationalism of the inter-war period. Here is a detailed chronicle of the spread of Garvey's call for African redemption throughout Africa and the repressive colonial responses it engendered. Volume VIII begins in 1917 with the little-known story of the Pan-African commercial schemes that preceded Garveyism and charts the early African reactions to the UNIA. Volume IX continues the story, documenting the establishment of UNIA chapters throughout Africa and presenting new evidence linking Garveyism and nascent Namibian nationalism.
