Download or read book No Longer Invisible written by Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2013 American Educational Studies Association Critics' Choice Award Drawing on conversations with hundreds of professors, co-curricular educators, administrators, and students from institutions spanning the entire spectrum of American colleges and universities, the Jacobsens illustrate how religion is constructively intertwined with the work of higher education in the twenty-first century. No Longer Invisible documents how, after decades when religion was marginalized, colleges and universities are re-engaging matters of faith-an educational development that is both positive and necessary. Religion in contemporary American life is now incredibly complex, with religious pluralism on the rise and the categories of "religious" and "secular" often blending together in a dizzying array of lifestyles and beliefs. Using the categories of historic religion, public religion, and personal religion, No Longer Invisible offers a new framework for understanding this emerging religious terrain, a framework that can help colleges and universities-and the students who attend them-interact with religion more effectively. The stakes are high: Faced with escalating pressures to focus solely on job training, American higher education may find that paying more careful and nuanced attention to religion is a prerequisite for preserving American higher education's longstanding commitment to personal, social, and civic learning.

Book The Power of the Invisible Forces

Download or read book The Power of the Invisible Forces written by Gladys Raj and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus said in John 10:10, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." There are two forces in this world. One is of God the creator of all things and the other one is of Satan, who is not a creator but an adversary of God. We are all being created in the image of God, but because of our forefathers Adam and Eve obeyed to Satan, the sin entered into this world. So Satan took control of this world and brought all kinds of misery, heartache, sickness, disease, and death to mankind. In reality, the real person is the spirit man. Those who do not know the Word of God fall into the trap of Satan and think that they are inherited the sickness, disease, anger, and all the fallen nature from their forefathers and they try to live with it. Jesus bore all the sickness, disease, curses and death bore upon Himself so that we can live victoriously (John 10:10). Satan attacks the people in their soul, mind and body. Jesus has given the believers the authority and power over the forces of darkness, the Satan. One of the root cause for emotional and physical problem is the Spiritual problem. Human beings are comprised of three components, such as spirit, soul (mind, emotion, and will) and body. To be made whole it is important to deal with the root cause. If a tree has a problem, in order to bear good fruit, the root needs to be treated and not the surface. Similarly, people facing emotional and physical problems need to diagnose the root cause, in the soulish realm, and not just the outward symptoms. People can receive the healing for the whole person by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the Name of Jesus and by the authority of the Word of God.

Book Outsiders Still

Download or read book Outsiders Still written by Vivian Smith and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite years of dominating journalism school classrooms across North America, women remain vastly underrepresented at the highest levels of newspaper leadership. Why do so many female journalists leave the industry and so few reach the top? Interviewing female journalists at daily newspapers across Canada, Vivian Smith – who spent fourteen years atThe Globe and Mail as a reporter, editor, and manager – finds that many of the obstacles that women face in the newspaper industry are the same now as they have been historically, made worse by the challenging times in which the industry finds itself. The youngest fear they will have to choose between a career and a family; mid-career women madly juggle the pressures of work and family while worrying that they are not “good mothers”; and the most senior reflect on decades of accomplishments mixed with frustration at newsroom sexism that has held them back. Listening carefully to the stories these journalists tell, both about themselves and about what they write, Smith reveals inOutsiders Still how overt hostility to women in the newsroom has been replaced by systemic inequality that limits or ends the careers of many female journalists. Despite decades of contributions to society's news agenda, women print journalists are outsiders still.

Book Overhearing a Christian Apology to the Nones

Download or read book Overhearing a Christian Apology to the Nones written by Thomas E. Rodgerson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the steady increase of the religiously unaffiliated Nones in America has generated anxious responses about rising secularism and loss of national identity, this book suggests a wider meaning-making approach wherein the Nones are seen as valuable dialogue partners necessary in this pivotal moment for the revealing of still hidden truths about culture, spirituality, and religion. Christians who overhear this dialogue may find upon self-reflection an emerging truth about their relationships, embedded stories, level of faith development, and susceptibility to a culturally conditioned, transactional religion. Nones who choose to engage in dialogue may find that the “nothingness” they bring to the dialogue is more significant than they realize, revealing truths of an apophatic spiritual path necessary for generating a transformational faith of freedom and capable of rebalancing a divisive, consumer-driven society. The religious and the not-religious, who are often seen as being on opposite sides of an imagined religious threshold, may instead be seen as standing together in a liminal space that opens in wordless silence to yet unseen possibilities and from which emerge new stories aligned with the heart of Creation.

  • Author : Michael Shermer

Download or read book The Believing Brain written by Michael Shermer and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-05-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Believing Brain is bestselling author Michael Shermer's comprehensive and provocative theory on how beliefs are born, formed, reinforced, challenged, changed, and extinguished. In this work synthesizing thirty years of research, psychologist, historian of science, and the world's best-known skeptic Michael Shermer upends the traditional thinking about how humans form beliefs about the world. Simply put, beliefs come first and explanations for beliefs follow. The brain, Shermer argues, is a belief engine. From sensory data flowing in through the senses, the brain naturally begins to look for and find patterns, and then infuses those patterns with meaning. Our brains connect the dots of our world into meaningful patterns that explain why things happen, and these patterns become beliefs. Once beliefs are formed the brain begins to look for and find confirmatory evidence in support of those beliefs, which accelerates the process of reinforcing them, and round and round the process goes in a positive-feedback loop of belief confirmation. Shermer outlines the numerous cognitive tools our brains engage to reinforce our beliefs as truths. Interlaced with his theory of belief, Shermer provides countless real-world examples of how this process operates, from politics, economics, and religion to conspiracy theories, the supernatural, and the paranormal. Ultimately, he demonstrates why science is the best tool ever devised to determine whether or not a belief matches reality.
