Book Asymmetric Inviscid Modes of Instability for Spiral Flow Between Two Concentric Rotating Cylinders

Download or read book Asymmetric Inviscid Modes of Instability for Spiral Flow Between Two Concentric Rotating Cylinders written by Frederic E. Bisshopp and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a number of recent papers, effects of axial flow and of asymmetry of the disturbance have been separately investigated for inviscid modes of instability of flow between concentric rotating cylinders. In narrow gap approximation, the combined effects are treated. (Author).

Book Inviscid Modes of Instability for Flow in a Curved Channel

Download or read book Inviscid Modes of Instability for Flow in a Curved Channel written by David Allan Lee and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inviscid modes of instability are investigated for the flow between concentric circular cylinders due to the combined effects of rotation and of a constant pressure gradient acting round the cylinders. Detailed results are obtained for the case of pure pressure flow in the limit of the small gap approximation. The results obtained show that both convective and oscillatory modes of instability are present. (Author).

Book Asymmetric Inviscid Modes of Instability in Couette Flow

Download or read book Asymmetric Inviscid Modes of Instability in Couette Flow written by F. E. Bisshopp and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate solution of the equation which governs the inviscid modes of instability of steady flow between concentric rotating cylinders is derived. The problem is treated in the narrow gap approximation, and the solution is applicable over the entire range of opposite rotation rates, but is limited to the treatment of disturbances which are nearly axially symmetric. Numerical results are given for the limiting cases where the ratio of angular velocities of the cylinders approaches zero and minus infinity. It is found that the growth rates of unstable modes, which are very nearly symmetric, are always less than the growth rate of the corresponding axisymmetric mode. (Author).

Book Hydrodynamic Instability and Transition to Turbulence

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Instability and Transition to Turbulence written by Akiva M. Yaglom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete revision of the part of Monin & Yaglom's famous two-volume work "Statistical Fluid Mechanics: Mechanics of Turbulence" that deals with the theory of laminar-flow instability and transition to turbulence. It includes the considerable advances in the subject that have been made in the last 15 years or so. It is intended as a textbook for advanced graduate courses and as a reference for research students and professional research workers. The first two Chapters are an introduction to the mathematics, and the experimental results, for the instability of laminar (or inviscid) flows to infinitesimal (in practice "small") disturbances. The third Chapter develops this linear theory in more detail and describes its application to particular problems. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with instability to finite-amplitude disturbances: much of the material has previously been available only in research papers.

  • Author : Gerhard H. Jirka
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis

Download or read book Shallow Flows written by Gerhard H. Jirka and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2004-09-15 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents the key findings of the International Symposium held in Delft in 2003, which explored the process of shallow flows. Shallow flows are found in lowland rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and in density-stratified atmospheres, and may be observed in puddles, as in oceans. They impact on the life and work of a wide variety of readers, who are here provided with a clear overview of the subject. Shallow flows are intrinsically turbulent. On one hand, there are strongly three-dimensional, small-scale turbulent motions and on the other hand, large-scale quasi-two-dimensional turbulence. This book explains and examines these differences and their effects with sections on transport processes in shallow flows; shallow jets, wakes and mixing layers; stratified and rotating flows in ocean and atmosphere; river and channel flows; and numerical modelling and turbulence closure techniques. The reader is provided with the pick of current studies and a fresh approach to the subject, with expert examination of a fascinating and crucial phenomenon of our world's water systems.
