Investment and speculation are so closely associated with the well-being of trade that the two are inseparable. Book The Stock Exchange

Download or read book The Stock Exchange written by Francis Wrigley Hirst and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stock Exchange: A Short Study of Investment and Speculation In an old Pennsylvanian almanac of the eighteenth century two qualities were postulated for success in business: first, application or industry, and second, thrift or frugality. The first without the second often leads to nothing. "A man if he knows not how to save as he gets, may keep his nose all his life to the grindstone, and die not worth a groat at last." The old proverb, A fat kitchen makes a lean will, should remind us moderns that not only excess in eating and drinking, but luxurious and expensive follies of all kinds may drive the hardest worker into debt and difficulty, until after long enjoyment of a good income he ends his career in poverty and dependence. This book is not concerned, however, with the moral value of thrift, or even with the advantages which savings bestow upon the individual. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Wall Street Investing Lthough the popular impression is probably the reverse, it is certainly a fact that a greater sum of money is annually lost in this country through unwise investment in Wall Street, than through pure speculation. While fortunes are daily jeopardized and dissi pated through speculation in stocks, bonds, grain-futures and like ventures, yet the many sums, large and small, which annually leave the pockets of actual investors are far greater in amount. Indeed, I would almost say that the losses incurred through unwise Wall Street investing are easily tenfold the losses occasioned through mere speculation on the exchanges. Book American Securities

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Securities: The Causes Influencing Investment and Speculation and the Fluctuations in Values, From 1872 to 1885 The extraordinary movements of the stock market during the year 1884 invite a careful inquiry. Prices dropped lower than at any other time since the resumption of specie pay ments, losing in a few weeks well-nigh half of the marvellous gain which had been realized during two years and'a half. Failures of extraordinary magnitude resulted, and gigantic frauds stained names hitherto of the highest honor. One tenth of the entire railroad property of the country was thrown into bankruptcy, and many companies of good stand ing were compelled to pass dividends. Book Investment Securities Essential Characteristic and Values Prevailing Opportunities Classic Reprint

Download or read book Investment Securities Essential Characteristic and Values Prevailing Opportunities Classic Reprint written by James R. Bancroft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Investment Securities, Essential Characteristic and Values, Prevailing Opportunities Investment funds are accumulations from business prosperity or successful speculation. The desire in investing these funds is to conserve principal and by putting it to work to improve one's income. Therefore, investments are made primarily for the return they give and not for profits. For example, if any individual who has accumulated, let's say, considerable money, decides to use in a conservative fashion, he would not think of allowing it simply to lie in a bank at a low rate of interest. If vigorous and forward-looking he would desire that such ac cumulated funds should earn a good return with safety. During recent years his attention would have turned to the low prices for long term investment securities. He could, for example, have purchased West Shore Railroad First Mortgage 4's, 2361. In doing so he would have had an absolute first mortgage on a railroad property that would give him an annual return on his money of or an annual income on an invest ment of of $550. It is this annual income that interests him primarily. The question of whether the market price of his investment purchase is four or five points lower than six months previous, or will be four or five points higher six months later, is not of prime importance. It is in this way that investment differs from speculation. We must grasp this difference immediately. Speculations are made absolutely for profit. Investments are made primarily. For income. While the desire to improve or at least maintain the principal of an investment must always be present in order to have the investment successful, the primary purpose is to bring in additional income. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Duncan on Investment and Speculation in Stocks and Shares In presenting this work to the public our object has been to explain the technicalities of the Stock Exchange, and to clear up such difficulties as have hitherto lain in the paths of inexperienced investors. We show the principles upon which a capitalist, large or small, can obtain the highest return for his money, and point out the comparative risks he runs in investments of various qualities. Without expressing our own views or indicating any particular securities as suitable for investment, we have endeavoured to place a capitalist in the position to judge for himself and employ his money according to his means, his requirements and his intelligence. We hope we have succeeded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The theme is worthy of an abler pen, but in the absence of other contributors to this branch of our National history, I venture the plain narrative of an active participator in the financial events of the times in which I have lived. They have been built up by men who have developed character and will-power, who have created depth and breadth Of mind through concentration and experience, rather than by men of exceptional native brilliancy. The serious practice of investment is a sturdy and businesslike pursuit. It is, in fact, at the root of every business. As an art, it depends on no mystery or occult secret. It consists of learning facts that are within the common reach and Of applying principles capable Of being assimilated. The purpose of this book is to present an outline of principles; it is not a manual Of facts. The discussion, moreover, is confined to the principles governing the investment of personal funds, excluding the canons of institutional and trustee investment, which is concerned with the funds of others. Yet even as thus limited, the subject is vast and the outline presented is not intended as an exhaustive treatment but merely as a foundation for orderly reasoning and inquiry. In this volume I will take up in more detail the principal fundamental factors governing security price movements and endeavor to show how such factors may be examined and weigh-cd expeditiously and accurately. It is realized that the subject is too broad for a complete discussion in the limits of a single volume, but it is hoped that what is suggested will be found helpful and will act as an incentive to further personal ex amination and study.
