L'estrema rigidità operativa e l'incertezza circa l'ammontare di alcune variabili rilevanti quali i prezzi energetici, la quantità di energia prodotta e le modalità di incentivazione costituiscono feature comuni alle aziende del settore che rendono la valutazione fortemente complessa minandone oltretutto la qualità dei risultati. Proprio in funzione di queste caratteristiche sono stati utilizzati due strumenti valutativi, l'analisi di scenario e la simulazione Montecarlo, che cercano di incorporare l'incertezza nella valutazione e misurarne le conseguenze. I risultati evidenziano che le aziende del “rinnovabile” rimangono buoni investimenti anche in condizioni estremamente negative dimostrando, tra l'altro, come l'analisi di scenario, strumento non particolarmente adatto a contesti fortemente rischiosi, tenda a sottovalutare il valore aziendale. Infine, l'analisi mostra come la diversificazione del mix produttivo possa costituire un ottimo mezzo per la riduzione del rischio operativo.
