Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise and Reviews `An important new book.` African Review of Business and Technology Legal harmonization is an essential step to encouraging foreign investment in Africa and the development of sustainable pan-African trade. This important new book explains the new system of law, now being developed and promoted by OHADA. OHADA - the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa - is an international organization currently comprising 16 Member States: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. As a result of the creation of OHADA, business law in these African countries has recently entered a new era of rapid modernization and harmonization. OHADA's essential aim is to promote economic integration and development by creating a secure legal framework for the conduct of business in Africa. In order to achieve this aim, OHADA has enacted a number of laws, known as Uniform Acts, on various aspects of business law including commercial and company laws, insolvency, securities and arbitration. These Uniform Acts are directly applicable throughout the Member States. This book offers an overview of the aims and achievements of the OHADA system and explains in depth the legislation that has been issued to date. It will be invaluable to legal and business development executives in major global companies, international law firms, accountants and management consultants, students of international business law, government agencies, and NGOs concerned with Africa and African business people. Book 55 raisons d investir en Afrique Celso Salles

Download or read book 55 raisons d investir en Afrique Celso Salles written by Celso Salles and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This original collection brings islands to the fore in a growing body of scholarship on the Indian Ocean, examining them as hubs or points of convergence and divergence in a world of maritime movements and exchanges. Straddling history and anthropology and grounded in the framework of connectivity, the book tackles central themes such as smallness, translocality, and “the island factor.” It moves to the farthest reaches of the region, with a rich variety of case studies on the Swahili-Comorian world, the Maldives, Indonesia, and more. With remarkable breadth and cohesion, these essays capture the circulations of people, goods, rituals, sociocultural practices, and ideas that constitute the Indian Ocean world. Together, they take up “islandness” as an explicit empirical and methodological issue as few have done before.

Book Financing Africa s Cities

Download or read book Financing Africa s Cities written by Thierry Paulais and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the issues of financing urban growth of the African continent -- which has the highest urban growth rate on the planet -- in the next decades. Considerable investment will be needed to sustain this level of growth and to clear up accumulated backlogs. At the same time, decentralization has resulted in increased responsibilities for local government; but in most cases, institutional reforms were carried out without the transfer of a sufficient level of resources, and local capacities in governance and project management are weak. Which mechanisms will finance these extensive needs, and how will African local governments meet these needs? Specifics on how to finance African cities have not been studied. The actual scale of this market has not been fully grasped. A systemic approach to this market is difficult because of its diversity (country size; institutional context; characteristics of urban network; availability of capital market, currency, etc.) and a lack of data. Donors’ assistance methods in the sector are disparate, marked by disputes between different schools of thought; special-purpose vehicles created by donors operate according to a variety of methods and with wide-ranging and sparsely disseminated results. What is the best way to transform these systems, often antiquated in many respects, into modern financing systems that facilitate access to domestic markets, mobilize local savings and reinforce local government autonomy? There is no single answer to this question in regard to such a variety of institutional and economic contexts. The main objective of the study is to clarify the debates and to enlighten the choices of African decision-makers at local and national level.

Book excerpt: CONCRETE CITY “Armelle Choplin’s Concrete City weaves a novel and engaging analysis of urbanization by tracing the journeys of cement and people making urban life in West Africa. From post-independence high modernist ambitions to building the opportunities to make a living, the emerging transnational corridor along the West African coast provides a starting point for insights which will expand and inform understanding of both established and newly emerging urbanization processes in many different contexts.” —Jennifer Robinson, Professor of Geography, University College of London, UK “In this very innovative and superbly illustrated book, Armelle Choplin makes cement vibrant with affect, politics, economic interests and cultural meanings. She takes us to a fascinating journey along the West African urban corridor following the social life of concrete and showing how this material shapes contemporary urbanization and everyday life.” —Ola Söderström, Professor of Geography, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland Concrete City: Material Flows and Urbanization in West Africa delivers a theoretically informed, ethnographic exploration of the African urban world through the life of concrete. Emblematic of frenetic urban and capitalistic development, this material is pervasive, shaping contemporary urban landscapes and societies and their links to the global world. It stands and circulates at the heart of major financial investments, political forces and environmental debates. At the same time, it epitomises values of modernity and success, redefining social practices, forms of dwelling and living, and popular imaginaries. The book invites the reader to follow bags of cement from production plant to construction site, along the 1000-kilometre urban corridor that links Abidjan to Accra, Lomé, Cotonou and Lagos, combining the perspectives of cement tycoons, entrepreneurs and political stakeholders, but also of ordinary men and women who plan, build and dream of the Concrete City. With this innovative exploration of urban life through concrete, Armelle Choplin delivers a fascinating journey into and reflection on the sustainability of our urban futures.
