Download or read book Stinking Stones and Rocks of Gold written by Shepherd W. McKinley and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Carolina Historical Society George C. Rogers Jr. Book Award "A solid contribution."--Journal of American History "An insightful analysis of the rise of the phosphate and fertilizer industries in the South Carolina lowcountry."--Business History Review "Places the rise of these industries in the context of the struggle for southern economic leadership in the years following the Civil War. . . . A well-written, engaging history."--Journal of Economic History "McKinley posits that the fertilizer industry emancipated former planter elites from the slave-based antebellum economy. . . . Ultimately, manufactured fertilizer contributed to fundamental changes in southern agriculture."--American Historical Review "A significant contribution to the story of industrialization in the New South."--Choice "Illustrates how South Carolina’s abundant phosphate deposits bred vibrant mining and fertilizer industries in Charleston and adjacent environs that helped reshape land, labor, and economy in the heartland of the former Confederacy."--Journal of Southern History "A finely layered and important study that fills in gaps in the industrial history of the New South and especially low-country South Carolina."--Sidney Bland, author of Preserving Charleston's Past, Shaping Its Future: The Life and Times of Susan Pringle Frost "Skillfully blurs the old, comfortable line between Old and New South economies and paints a nuanced picture of the new labor relations in the post-slavery era."--Charles Holden, author of In the Great Maelstrom In the first book ever written about the impact of phosphate mining on the South Carolina plantation economy, Shepherd McKinley explains how the convergence of the phosphate and fertilizer industries carried long-term impacts for America and the South. Fueling the rapid growth of lowcountry fertilizer companies, phosphate mining provided elite plantation owners a way to stem losses from emancipation. At the same time, mining created an autonomous alternative to sharecropping, enabling freed people to extract housing and labor concessions. Stinking Stones and Rocks of Gold develops an overarching view of what can be considered one of many key factors in the birth of southern industry. This top-down, bottom-up history (business, labor, social, and economic) analyzes an alternative path for all peoples in the post-emancipation South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few things evoke thoughts and memories of the past more than a house from a bygone era, and few places are identified and symbolized more by historic dwellings than the American South. Plantation houses built with columned porticos and wide porches, stout chimneys, large rooms, and sweeping staircases survive as legacies of both a storied and troubled past. These homes are at the heart of a complex web of human relationships that have shaped the social and cultural heritage of the region for generations. Despite their commanding appearance, the region's plantation houses have proven to be fragile relics of history, vulnerable to decay, neglect, and loss. Today, only a small percentage of the South's antebellum treasures survive. In Southern Splendor: Saving Architectural Treasures of the Old South, historians Marc R. Matrana, Robin S. Lattimore, and Michael W. Kitchens explore almost fifty houses built before the Civil War that have been authentically restored or preserved. Methodically examined are restoration efforts that preserve not only homes and other structures, but also the stories of those living in or occupying those homes. The authors discuss the challenges facing specific plantation homes and their preservation. Featuring over 275 stunning photographs, as well as dozens of firsthand accounts and interviews with those involved in the preservation of these historic properties, Southern Splendor describes the leading role the South has played, since the nineteenth century, in the historic preservation movement in this country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of early historical preservation efforts between the 1780s and the 1850s In Historic Real Estate, Whitney Martinko shows how Americans in the fledgling United States pointed to evidence of the past in the world around them and debated whether, and how, to preserve historic structures as permanent features of the new nation's landscape. From Indigenous mounds in the Ohio Valley to Independence Hall in Philadelphia; from Benjamin Franklin's childhood home in Boston to St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina; from Dutch colonial manors of the Hudson Valley to Henry Clay's Kentucky estate, early advocates of preservation strove not only to place boundaries on competitive real estate markets but also to determine what should not be for sale, how consumers should behave, and how certain types of labor should be valued. Before historic preservation existed as we know it today, many Americans articulated eclectic and sometimes contradictory definitions of architectural preservation to work out practical strategies for defining the relationship between public good and private profit. In arguing for the preservation of houses of worship and Indigenous earthworks, for example, some invoked the "public interest" of their stewards to strengthen corporate control of these collective spaces. Meanwhile, businessmen and political partisans adopted preservation of commercial sites to create opportunities for, and limits on, individual profit in a growing marketplace of goods. And owners of old houses and ancestral estates developed methods of preservation to reconcile competing demands for the seclusion of, and access to, American homes to shape the ways that capitalism affected family economies. In these ways, individuals harnessed preservation to garner political, economic, and social profit from the performance of public service. Ultimately, Martinko argues, by portraying the problems of the real estate market as social rather than economic, advocates of preservation affirmed a capitalist system of land development by promising to make it moral.

Book The Expansion of South Carolina 1729 1765 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Expansion of South Carolina 1729 1765 Classic Reprint written by Robert Lee Meriwether and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expansion of South Carolina, 1729-1765 The process which filled the back country with small farmers was not the only colonial expansion. An older and more spectacular movement, long before the settlement of the piedmont, carried English trade and influence into the heart of the continent. The earlier chapters of this story have been written with rare Skill by Verner W. Crane in his Southern Frontier. The progress of the South Carolina back country, as in the case of several other colonies, was at times profoundly affected by the Indian trade and its ac companying alliances, and a subordinate but important part of my work has been to set forth, from a superabundance of material, the later stages of imperial development. For the actual processes of South Carolina settlement - the primary con cern of this book - there are, in comparison with other states, enormous and surprisingly complete records. Of material for some of the most important phases of intellectual life and daily routine, however, there 'is little or none. It is partly to compensate for the incompleteness of the picture, partly for their own inherent interest, that I have devoted so much attention to the prosaic yet eloquent records of individual settlers in their eager quest of land.
