Book excerpt: Geographical offender profiling is an area of criminological and psychological research where the location of an offender's home is inferred by how the crime scenes are geographically dispersed. The research shows a clear connection between the offender's residence or occupational location and the offender's crime scene locations, although no research has been done into connections between other places the offender has a connection with and crime scene locations. The aim of this exploratory study is to examine whether the distance between the crime scene and different anchor points of an offender, such as a parent's residence or a sibling's residence, is related. This is important because it can give a better overview of the movements of offenders and might lead to law enforcement arresting an offender earlier, which can save lives, time, and money. The study analyzed 18 police files involving cases of serial sexual homicide. Results indicate that the distance from the arrest site to the crime scenes is the shortest distance, while the offender's child's mother's residence is the farthest away from the crime scenes. The parental (both parents live here) residence, paternal (only the father lives here), and maternal (only the mother lives here) residence, show interesting results in that the paternal residence is the closest to the crime scenes. The parental residence was the farthest away from the crime scenes while the maternal residence falls in between the paternal and parental residences. The distance between the homicide and disposal site in a series increased in most cases, while car theft and car recovery sites, and abduction and captivity sites decrease in distance.
