Book Automatic milking a better understanding

Download or read book Automatic milking a better understanding written by A. Meijering and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2000 the book Robotic Milking, reflecting the proceedings of an International Symposium which was held in The Netherlands came out. At that time, commercial introduction of automatic milking systems was no longer obstructed by technological inadequacies. Particularly in a few west-European countries, systems were being installed at an increasing rate. However, it was recognised that the changeover from 'traditional' to automatic milking affected the farming operation, herd management and control of milk quality profoundly and that many of the implications were still unknown. So, new challenges in various fields of dairy farming and new research areas emerged. Since this previous International Symposium, much has happened. In general automatic milking has been adopted as a realistic alternative for milking in the 'traditional' milking parlour. Systems have gradually been improved and, maybe even more importantly, farmers have become more familiar with their potential and limitations, both technically and in herd management. The number of farms milking with an automatic milking system has worldwide increased to more than 2.200 by the end of 2003 . From 2000 to now, the level of scientific knowledge on various aspects and consequences of automatic milking has increased largely as well because of research efforts all over the world. A significant share of these efforts has been made within the framework of a EU-granted project on the implications of the introduction of automatic milking on dairy farms. Some seven research institutes and six industrial companies from six countries joined their expertise and experience in order to facilitate a widespread adoption of automatic milking without undesirable side effects. This book reflects the knowledge on automatic milking generated all over the world in the last few years. Its contents can therefore be regarded as the present state of knowledge in the field of automatic milking, for a better understanding."

Book Automatic Milking and Grazing

Download or read book Automatic Milking and Grazing written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When automatic milking is combined with grazing the cows are given a unique opportunity to choose between being indoors or outdoors. Concerns have been raised about achieving sufficient number of milkings per day since the cows' motivation to be milked is low and cows are expected to go to milking voluntarily. The overall aim was therefore to examine how management routines affect cow motivation to visit the milking unit several times a day. First it was hypothesised that distance to pasture and level of supplements affects the milking frequency. The results demonstrated that cows with a shorter distance to pasture had a higher milking frequency during the first part of the grazing season and a higher milk yield compared with cows pasturing further from the barn. One important finding was that cows on the distant pasture changed their behaviour as the grazing season progressed and almost ceased to walk to their pasture area. A high level of silage supplements compared with a buffer feed offered in the barn had no affect on the milk yield. Also there was no affect on the number of milkings during the first part of the grazing season but during the latter part, cows with a high level of silage had a lower number of milkings. It was also hypothesized that it is possible to strengthen the cows' perception of a feed reward in the milking unit by training the cow to respond to a conditioned stimulus, an acoustic signal. Most of the cows learnt to approach the milking unit following the signal when they were in an enclosed area of the barn, close to the milking unit. However, when receiving the signal out on pasture the response to the signal was variable and comparatively low. Finally, the hypothesis that enhanced sensory stimulation during milking by feeding or stroking the cows' abdomen affects the level of the oxytocin and cortisol during milking was tested. Feeding during milking increased the plasma oxytocin level and milk production whereas brushing during milking d

Book excerpt: The aim of this manual is to improve the welfare of dairy cattle in tropical developing countries, and by doing so, optimise cow and herd performance. It gives the stockmen and farmers directly concerned with the cattle a better understanding of animal behaviour and the ways cattle communicate their comfort or distress. The book discusses normal cattle behaviour and shows how domestication and breeding can affect behaviour to achieve high levels of production of milk, live weight gain and fertility. Animal welfare is important for producers because it can affect the health, production and contentment of cows. Animal welfare practices which adversely affect cow and herd performance on tropical small holder dairy farms are identified. Advice is then given to change the animal's environment or modify a handler's technique to ensure cattle have the degree of comfort needed to achieve more profitable and sustainable systems of livestock farming. Cow Talk will be a beneficial resource for farmers who want to improve animal welfare, farm advisers who can assist farmers to improve their welfare practices, educators who develop training programs for farmers and dairy advisers, and other stakeholders in tropical dairy production such as local agribusiness, policy makers and research scientists.

Book Alternative Approaches for Analyses of Production Performance from Automatic Milking Systems in South Africa

Download or read book Alternative Approaches for Analyses of Production Performance from Automatic Milking Systems in South Africa written by Anton Ulendo Gresse and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, dairy producers are employing precision farming practices and incorporating computer software that enables producers to manage large herds at an individual animal level. South African dairy producers have been adopting similar strategies with a trend towards larger production units and the incorporation of automatic milking systems. The software employed in automatic systems record production, reproduction and health parameters on a daily basis. These systems record all variables and movements of individual animals, from the day of birth to the day the cow exits the herd. The majority of producers using automatic milking systems do not participate in national recording. The aim of this study was to perform a production analysis with the primary objective of constructing a template for extracting and analysing herd performance data from producers employing automatic management software in South Africa. Two large dairy herds, representing a TMR system, and a pasture-based production system participated in the study. Producers installed the AfiFarm herd management software from S.A.E Afikim, Kibbutz, Israel. By extracting animal records from multiple years, comprehensive data tables were constructed for different production analyses. Analyses included time-trend evaluation of herd numbers, mean production and reproduction performance at the heifer and cow level, distribution of exit reasons and assessing the relationship between the genetic merit of sires and the mean performance of their progeny. Findings from this study confirm that the AfiFarm herd management software permit extraction and analyses of multiple variables imperative to dairy management at the herd and cow level. The software has the potential to serve as a platform to add a vast number of dairy cow performance records for future analyses.

Book Automatic Milking and Grazing Motivation of Cows to Visit the Milking Robot

Download or read book Automatic Milking and Grazing Motivation of Cows to Visit the Milking Robot written by E. Spoerndly and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a number of experiments where different factors that affect milking frequency have been studied. Although some basic experiments have been performed indoors, focus has been on the pasture season and the grazing situation. Factors of importance to milking frequency that are discussed in this report are feed related factors, water supply, environmental factors and cow locomotion. The report also presents results from experiments studying the learning process of cattle with the objective to teach the animals to respond to an individual auditory signal. A cow-calling apparatus has also been tested during the pasture season to summon the individual cow to the milking unit.
