Book excerpt: The European standard EN15450 states that the Coefficient of Performance (COP) target range for a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) installation should lie within the range of 3.5 to 4.5; when used for heating a building, and a typical Air-Source Heat Pump (ASHP) has a COP of 2.0 to 3.0 at the beginning of the heating season and then decrease gradually as the ambient air becomes cooler, whereas a typical GSHP is in the range of 3.5 –4.0, also at the beginning of the heating season and then decrease gradually as heat is drawn from the ground. For these reasons, in the middle of winter, when the COP drop, the heat pumps can generally only be considered as a 'pre-heating' method for producing higher temperature heat such as domestic hot water. In addition soil presents certain difficulties, due to the high cost of drilling to position coils in the ground compare to air source, although frost formation on the evaporator in winter limits also limit the use of air source. Though technology advances or are needed to overcome those issues. The aims of this project, therefore, were firstly to reduce the drilling length of the ground heat exchanger of the ground source heat pumps and to maintain high COPs of the air and ground source heat pumps from beginning to the end of the heating season; and secondly to develop a viable alternative evaporator for air source heat pumps to reduce frost formation during winter. These were achieved; the first aim through the combination of ground loops with solar-air panels or solar roof/collectors roof to ground heat exchangers loops to reduce the length of the boreholes, and to reduce the freezing effects around the boreholes, hence increase or maintain a constant temperature during heating season. The second aim was also achieved through development and validation of novel air source heat pump evaporator, using Direct Expansion (DX) black flat plate absorber or/and vacuum tubes for frost reduction. In this thesis, in order to achieve the above aims; four aspects of investigations have been independently investigated as following: 1- Preliminary investigation on Direct Expansion (DX) Solar Source Heat Pump system. 2- Investigation on the performance of the DX- PV/heat pipe heat pump system to reduce frost and enhance the COP of the air source heat pumps, 3- A small scale testing on the heat injection on energy piles for residential buildings for earth charging by means of solar roof/collectors 4- A field trial testing of the performance of the combination of solar-air thermal collectors with conventional GSHP with shorter ground heat exchangers (48m deep) to charge the ground and reduce freezing effects around the piles after heating cycle. From the simulation results, the novel PV/hp-HP system has a COP ranging from 4.65 to 6.16 with an average of 5.35. The condenser capacity ranging from 33 to 174 W would provide the heat source for space heating and domestic hot water. The energy performance of the novel PV/hp-heat pump was not as good as expected due to the low solar radiation. It should be much better in some low latitude locations with better solar radiation. The results of this thesis have shown that the length of ground source boreholes could be considerably reduce by about 60% compare to conventional boreholes using a combination of solar-air collectors with the GSHP and the average COP of 3.7 was achieved.

Book excerpt: Portland General Electric has proposed coupling one or more water tanks with two heat pumps in order to perform load-shifting in residential customer heating and cooling applications. By using the water tanks as a thermal storage unit, this project attempts to partially decouple energy consumption from generation to provide peak demand reduction and to better facilitate the integration of variable renewable energy resources. A scoping study was performed to evaluate the potential impact of this project if implemented in single family homes in Portland, Oregon. This study revealed that the system could provide meaningful savings in the cost of electricity to both the customer and utility. Additionally, an optimization algorithm was developed to dictate system operation and to maximize gains to the utility. Evolutionary algorithms were explored in an attempt to increase the effectiveness of the algorithm's search in limited computation time. Ultimately, an evolution strategy was selected as the most suitable based on tests run in winter and spring months. A genetic algorithm was then developed to handle fixed-speed heat pump operation for compatibility with an alpha-system prototype that has been developed by the research team.

Book excerpt: During the 1960s and 1970s, electric baseboard heating systems were a common space heating approach in multi-unit residential buildings due to low installation costs, minimal use of interior space and the relatively low price of electricity. As a result, approximately 50% of apartment buildings in Canada have electric baseboard heating. However, rapidly increasing costs of electricity, concerns over environmental damage associated with conventional generating stations and the very age of most electric baseboards in apartment buildings will necessitate the development of alternative space heating strategies. This is a report of research to investigate the technical potential and economic benefits of retrofitting electrically heated apartment buildings with ground-source heat pumps. The report presents results of a literature and web search and review of available components and equipment suitable for the application, and analyses the most promising combination using an example building complex in the Greater Toronto area. Both the cases of no benefit and full benefit for central air conditioning are considered. Comparisons are drawn with retrofitting natural gas heating systems under the same circumstances. Conclusions and recommendations for new component development are identified and the economic results are as attractive under some circumstances as natural gas heating system retrofits.

Book excerpt: Three high temperature heat pump systems based on vapor compression cycles are introduced and examined. Four fluids (water, cyclohexane, biphenyl and mercury) are selected and analysed thermodynamically as prospective working fluids for the high temperature heat pumps. These working fluids are used in cascaded cycles to upgrade the heat to a temperature of 600 °C. The equations of state used in performance analysis are Peng-Robinson, NRTL and IAPWS-95. A parametric analysis is carried out to study the effects of isentropic efficiency, sink temperature, source temperature, and ambient temperature on the system performance. Energetic and exergetic COPs of the overall and individual cycles are determined. The COP values obtained are found to range from 2.08 to 4.86, depending upon the cycle and temperature levels. The System 2 (energetic and exergetic COPs are 3.8 and 1.9 respectively) outperforms System 1 (energetic and exergetic COPs are 2.2 and 1.0 respectively) both energetically and exergetically, while operating under same conditions of source temperature 81°C and sink temperature 600 °C. The System 3 achieves maximum cycle temperature of 792 °C while operating under moderate pressure ratios. The high COP values in some instances make these systems promising alternatives to fossil fuel and electrical heating. As a possible sustainable scenario, these pumps can utilise low grade heat from geothermal, nuclear or thermal power plants and derive work from clean energy sources (solar, wind, nuclear) to deliver high grade heat. The high delivery temperatures make these heat pumps suitable for processes with corresponding needs, like high temperature endothermic reactions, metallurgical processes, distillation, and thermochemical water splitting.
