Book Force Method Optimization

Download or read book Force Method Optimization written by R. A. Gellatly and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To overcome problems arising from the rigorous representation of stress constraints in structural optimization, the use of the force method is demonstrated. The force method of finite element analysis is used to transform a stress-constrained redundant structure into a stress and displacement constrained determinate structure for the purposes of optimization. The resulting problem is non-linear, but the use of a linear programming stage is effective in providing a rapid convergence on the optimum design in many cases. Problems which hitherto required many iterations to converge are now solvable in only one or two steps. The rate of constraint numbers versus numbers of variables is investigated analytically using a 22-bar truss problem as an example. The vital key in optimization technology is identified as the identification of active constraints. The incorporation of displacement constraints into the optimization program is also presented. Examples of problems solved by this approach are included. Discussion of difficulties encountered in the development work also provides indicators for future areas of research. (Author).

Book Shape and Layout Optimization of Structural Systems and Optimality Criteria Methods

Download or read book Shape and Layout Optimization of Structural Systems and Optimality Criteria Methods written by G.I.N. Rozvany and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shape and layout optimization represent some of the most useful but also most difficult classes of problems in structural design, which have been investigated in detail only during the last few years. Shape optimization is concerned with the optimal shape of boundaries of continua or of interfaces between two materials in composites. Layout optimization deals with the simultaneous optimization of the topology, geometry and cross-sectional sizes of structural systems. In spite of its complextiy, layout optimization is a very rewarding task, because it results in much greater savings than the optimization of cross-sectional sizes only. Because of their important role in shape and layout optimization, the book also covers in detail new optimality criteria methods, which are capable of handling many thousand design variables and active design contraints. Shape and layout optimization is becoming an indispensable tool in the design of aeroplanes, space structures, cars, ships, building and civil engineering structures, power stations, chemical plants, artificial organs, sporting equipment, and all other solid systems where stresses and deformations play an important role.

Book Shape Design Sensitivity Analysis and Optimization Using the Boundary Element Method

Download or read book Shape Design Sensitivity Analysis and Optimization Using the Boundary Element Method written by Zhiye Zhao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the various aspects of shape optimization of two dimensional continuum structures, including shape design sensitivity analysis, structural analysis using the boundary element method (BEM), and shape optimization implementation. The book begins by reviewing the developments of shape optimization, followed by the presentation of the mathematical programming methods for solving optimization problems. The basic theory of the BEM is presented which will be employed later on as the numerical tool to provide the structural responses and the shape design sensitivities. The key issue of shape optimization, the shape design sensitivity analy sis, is fully investigated. A general formulation of stress sensitivity using the continuum approach is presented. The difficulty of the modelling of the ad joint problem is studied, and two approaches are presented for the modelling of the adjoint problem. The first approach uses distributed loads to smooth the concentrated adjoint loads, and the second approach employs the singu larity subtraction method to remove the singular boundary displacements and tractions from the BEM equation. A novel finite difference based approach to shape design sensitivity is pre sented, which overcomes the two drawbacks of the conventional finite difference method. This approach has the advantage of being simple in concept, and eas ier implementation. A shape optimization program for two-dimensional continuum structures is developed, including structural analysis using the BEM, shape design sensitiv ity analysis, mathematical programming, and the design boundary modelling.

Book Optimization and Anti optimization of Structures Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Optimization and Anti optimization of Structures Under Uncertainty written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents a collaboration between internationally recognized experts on anti-optimization and structural optimization, and summarizes various novel ideas, methodologies and results studied over 20 years. The book vividly demonstrates how the concept of uncertainty should be incorporated in a rigorous manner during the process of designing real-world structures. The necessity of anti-optimization approach is first demonstrated, then the anti-optimization techniques are applied to static, dynamic and buckling problems, thus covering the broadest possible set of applications. Finally, anti-optimization is fully utilized by a combination of structural optimization to produce the optimal design considering the worst-case scenario. This is currently the only book that covers the combination of optimization and anti-optimization. It shows how various optimization techniques are used in the novel anti-optimization technique, and how the structural optimization can be exponentially enhanced by incorporating the concept of worst-case scenario, thereby increasing the safety of the structures designed in various fields of engineering.

Book Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis and Design Optimization of Thin walled Structures

Download or read book Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis and Design Optimization of Thin walled Structures written by Peyman Khosravi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, an efficient, accurate and robust methodology for nonlinear finite element analysis and design optimization of thin-walled structures is presented. Main parts of this research are: formulation and development of an accurate and efficient shell element, a robust nonlinear finite element analysis technique, and an efficient optimization methodology. In the first part, a new three-node triangular shell element is developed by combining the optimal membrane element and discrete Kirchhoff triangle (DKT) plate bending element, and is then modified for laminated composite plates and shells so as to include the membrane-bending coupling effect. Also, a moderately thick shell element is developed in a similar manner by combining the discrete Kirchhoff-Mindlin triangular (DKMT) plate bending element and the optimal membrane element. Using appropriate shape functions for the bending and membrane modes of the element, the "inconsistent" stress stiffness matrix is formulated and the tangent stiffness matrix is determined. In the second part, a robust nonlinear finite element analysis program based on the corotational technique is developed to analyze thin-walled structures with geometric nonlinearity. The new element is thoroughly tested by solving few popular benchmark problems. The results of the analyses are compared with those obtained based on other membrane elements. In the third part, optimization algorithms based on the optimality criteria are developed and then combined with the nonlinear finite element analysis to optimize different types of thin-walled structures with geometric nonlinearity. The optimization problem considers the thickness or geometry design variables, and aims to maximize the critical load of the structure subject to constant total mass, or minimize the total mass subject to constant applied loads. The optimization results based on the developed design optimization algorithm are compared with those based on the gradient-based sequential quadratic programming method to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the developed procedure. An application of the thickness optimization for locating the potential places to add the stiffeners in stiffened panels is also presented. Also a method is presented to efficiently incorporate the effects of local buckling and mode switching during optimization process for stiffened panels.
