Book Investigation of Weldability of Hot work Tool Steels and a Titanium Alloy

Download or read book Investigation of Weldability of Hot work Tool Steels and a Titanium Alloy written by L. A. Luini and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weldability of H-11 and D6-AC steels and the B-120VCA titanium alloy was investigated. Vacuum melted and air-melted H-11 steels were compared for both base metal and weldments. The vacuum-melted base metal and weld metal showed higher notch strength and toughness than the air-melted steel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weldability of 6 hot-work tool steels was investigated to develop optimum welding procedures. Welds were made in sheet and plate with the inert- gas tungsten-arc and inert-gas consumable electr de processes under various welding conditions. Variations in preheat, postheat, and energy input had statistically significant, but practically unimportant, effects on mechanical properties after hardening and tempering. Most mechanical-test failures were initiated in the welds whether or not defects were present. The weld metal retained its heterogeneous microstructure after hardening and tempering even when previously subject to annealing-type heat treatments. Lehigh-restrainttest s udies indicated that hot and cold cracking can occur. Low-temperature cracking can be prevented by increasing the preheat temperature. Large-radius Charpy-impact specimens were found to be more satisfactory than the V-notched specimens for these steels. The high-temperature weld tensile strength at 1000 F was 190,000 psi for an H-11 steel; it was reduced to 156,000 after holding at 1000 F for 24 hours.

Book Joining of Titanium

Download or read book Joining of Titanium written by Robert Edward Monroe and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report supplies information on joining processes applicable to titanium and its alloys in sheet metal applications, primarily related directly to airframe construction. Although the material presented here does not cover all titanium joining processes, and omits such processes as plasma-arc, submerged-arc, electroslag, flash, and high-frequency resistance welding, the data presented cover materials up to 2-inches thick in some cases and the report should be useful to anyone seeking titanium joining information. The joining processes covered fall into five categories: welding, brazing, metallurgical bonding (diffusion and deformation bonding), adhesive bonding, and mechanical fastening. The fusion welding processes that are discussed in detail include gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, arc spot, and electron beam. The resistance processes give extended coverage are spot, roll spot, and seam welding. (Author).

Book Welding High strength Steels

Download or read book Welding High strength Steels written by P. A. Kammer and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of the developments in welding steels with yield strengths greater than 150 ksi have included low-alloy martensitic steels, medium-alloy martensitic steels, nickel maraging steels, and bainitic steels. Only weldments from medium-alloy martensitic steels and nickel maraging steels have mechanical properties approaching those of the base plate without a complete postweld heat treatment. The most serious problem with the other steel is low toughness in the weld fusion zone. Adequate weld metal toughness under conditions of elastic strain can be obtarined over the entire 150 to 225 ksi yield-strength range only if the tungsten-arc welding process is used. Processes with higher deposition rates can produce comparable weld deposits only in the lower portion of the range. Above a yield strength of 200 ksi, 18Ni maraging steel weldments have the best combination of strength and toughness. Below 200 ksi, the HP 9-4-25 medium-alloy martensitic steel and 12Ni maraging steel weldments have nearly equal properties.

Book Theory of Weldability of Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Theory of Weldability of Metals and Alloys written by Ivan Hrivňák and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the behaviour of metals and alloys during welding. In the first part the heat flow in arc welding processes is discussed. The weld thermal cycle is explained in terms of heat input, and the geometry of weld and thicknesses to be welded. The real welding cycle is described in terms of thermal and strain cycles. The weld metal is characterized in terms of fusion stage, absorption of gases and stage of metal crystallization and structural transformation. The metallurgical background of cracking is described by a full set of crackability tests along with the evaluation of metals from the point of view of crackability. Post welding heat treatment is reviewed, and includes the relaxation of stresses induced by welding. Guidelines are given for the selection of steels for welded structures. Several chapters examine the weldability of particular steels, including high strength steels, stainless steels, high alloyed steels, cryogenic steels and other metals and alloys. The theories are quantified in the form of calculations or computing programmes. Readers will find sufficent data for software processing.
