Book Investigation of Use of Slag Aggregates and Slag Cements in Concrete Pavements to Reduce the Maintenance Cost

Download or read book Investigation of Use of Slag Aggregates and Slag Cements in Concrete Pavements to Reduce the Maintenance Cost written by Kho Pin Verian and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS), the by-product of the pig iron making process, is often used as coarse aggregate in portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements, especially in the areas located in the vicinity of the iron mills. The utilization of this by-product as an aggregate in concrete offers environmental and economic benefits in the form of elimination of waste, decrease in the disposal costs, and reduction in need for mining of the natural materials. However, concerns exist with relation of the influence of these aggregates on the long-term durability of pavement concretes, especially at locations exposed to freezing and thawing environment. The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of using the ACBFS aggregate (slag aggregate) as a replacement for natural aggregates on the properties of pavement concrete designed to meet the standard specifications of the Indiana Department of Transportation. A total of eight different concrete mixtures, four containing air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACBFS) as coarse aggregate and additional four containing natural dolomite, were used in this study. The mechanical and durability properties of these concretes were assessed by conducting series of tests prior and after the exposure to FT and WD cycles. In addition, changes in the overall physical appearance of the test specimens were also documented to aid in the evaluation of the effects of given exposure conditions on the deterioration process of concretes. In the case of a plain concrete, the analysis of the data collected during the study (i.e. the observed loss of strength, reduction in the dynamic modulus of elasticity, and physical changes in the appearance of the specimens) indicated that the calcium chloride (CaCl2) deicer caused the most severe distress, followed by the magnesium chloride (MgCl2). Specimens exposed to sodium chloride (NaCl) experienced the least damage and performed comparably to those exposed to distilled water (DST).The use of either Class C fly ash, slag cement or the combination of both as part of the binder was found to greatly increase the resistance of concrete to damaging effects of deicers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial residues are obtained from all treatments of raw materials in industry during the process of mining, raw materials treatment and final usage. During these processes of enrichment, optimization and utilization of raw materials only part of the original material can be used for the dedicated application and some left-over parts remain. This contribution focuses on residues like mining overburdens, ore residues and ore processing residues like slags, but also on incineration ashes and water purification muds. Natural materials like pozzolanes, due to their potential of CO2-reduction, are also included. Based on this knowledge secondary reusable materials due to their chemical, physical and mineralogical properties can be identified. Also different characterization methods for analysing the potential for further application of these residues are included.

Book Feasibility of Expanding the Use of Steel Slag as a Concrete Pavement Aggregate

Download or read book Feasibility of Expanding the Use of Steel Slag as a Concrete Pavement Aggregate written by Brad A. Fronek and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability has become an important aspect of developed countries throughout the world. Sustainability is the ability to use byproducts and or waste materials from industry and recycle these materials in such a way that the application of the materials provides a beneficial use in the manufacturing or construction sector. As the United States and the rest of the world continue to grow, so too does the demand on the limited natural resources throughout the world. It is this demand on the resources that has brought the idea of sustainability to the forefront of research and design. The transportation industry continues to incorporate sustainability into its projects. The industry is constantly trying new and innovative ways to recycle materials that would otherwise be sent to a landfill. Slag, a byproduct from the production of steel, is one of these materials. The transportation sector has used slags as aggregates for subbase and base layers in roads. Some slags, like blast furnace slag, have been used in portland concrete cement (PCC) applications as well. The focus of this research is to investigate the feasibility of using steel slag as an aggregate for use in portland concrete cement. An important aspect of this research was to complete a comprehensive review of other research that has been conducted on the use of steel slag as an aggregate. The literature reviewed included of laboratory studies that focused on the physical, mechanical, chemical, and expansive characteristics of the steel slag. The research on the use of steel slag was gathered from 16 different countries, which include the United States, Spain, Japan, China, Germany, Finland, and Saudi Arabia. Some of these studies have found that properly treated slag may be non-expansive and used in PCC. The possible expansion of the steel slag is the most important characteristic. The expansion of the steel slag aggregate can have detrimental effects on a pavement. This research investigated some of the treatment processes that are being used to alter the composition of the slag so that it is no longer expansive. It also examines testing methods used to test for the expansion of the steel slag. Seven State Department of Transportation specifications were also reviewed. Some DOT's allow its use as an aggregate in asphalt pavements but do not allow its use in portland concrete cement. A review of the ASTM standards relating to the use of the slag as an aggregate was also completed in this study. Different slag associations like the National Slag Association and the Australian Slag Association were contacted during this research, as well as 19 different steel companies, to try and get an understanding of the public perception of the use of the steel slag as an aggregate in PCC, and also to try and locate possible case studies. Several case studies were identified, and two of them resulted in a failure of the pavement. In those cases it is unknown what, if any, treatment process was used on the slag prior to its use in the portland concrete pavement.

Book Reduction of Minimum Required Weight of Cementitious Materials in WisDOT Concrete Mixes

Download or read book Reduction of Minimum Required Weight of Cementitious Materials in WisDOT Concrete Mixes written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was designed to explore the feasibility of lowering the cementitious materials content (CMC) used in Wisconsin concrete pavement construction. The cementitious materials studied included portland cement, fly ash, and ground granulated blast furnace slag. For the first phase, mixtures were prepared using the current WisDOT aggregate grading specification. For the second phase, mixtures were prepared using an optimized (e.g. Shilstone) gradation. A variety of tests for fresh and hardened concrete were conducted to determine the viability of low CMC mixtures for use in concrete pavement.
