Book Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Download or read book Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution written by Krister Holmberg and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many industrial formulations such as detergents, paints, foodstuff and cosmetics contain both surfactants and polymers and their interaction govern many of the properties. This book is unique in that it discusses the solution chemistry of both surfactants and polymers and also the interactions between the two. The book, which is based on successful courses given by the authors since 1992, is a revised and extended version of the first edition that became a market success with six reprints since 1998. Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution is broad in scope, providing both theoretical insights and practical help for those active in the area. This book contains a thorough discussion of surfactant types and gives information of main routes of preparation. A chapter on novel surfactants has been included in the new edition. Physicochemical phenomena such as self-assembly in solution, adsorption, gel formation and foaming are discussed in detail. Particular attention is paid to the solution behaviour of surfactants and polymers containing polyoxyethylene chains. Surface active polymers are presented and their interaction with surfactants is a core topic of the book. Protein-surfactant interaction is also important and a new chapter deals with this issue. Microemulsions are treated in depth and several important application such as detergency and their use as media for chemical reactions are presented. Emulsions and the choice of emulsifier is discussed in some detail. The new edition also contains chapters on rheology and wetting. Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution is aimed at those dealing with surface chemistry research at universities and with surfactant formulation in industry.

Book Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Download or read book Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution written by Bo Jönsson and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2000-01-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique book which discusses the solution chemistry of surfactants and polymers, presenting both the theory of surfactant and polymer interactions and also giving practical help for workers in this area. Surfactants are used together with polymers in a wide range of applications such as detergents, paints, paper coatings, food, pharmacy and cosmetics. Together the surfactant and polymer provide the stability, rheology, etc., needed for specific application. Hence the need for knowledge about physicochemical properties of both surfactants and polymers and polymer-surfactant interactions, to enhance formulation work. This book, based on successful courses run by the authors, brings the two topics together to enable readers to gain a good understanding of the solution behaviour of surfactant-polymer combinations. It includes a thorough description of surfactant types, including their main synthetic routes, and discusses physicochemical phenomena such as self-assembly, adsorption, gel formation and foaming. Particular attention is paid to the solution behaviour of surfactants and polymers containing polyoxyethylene chains. Surface-active polymers are then presented and their interaction with surfactants is a core topic of the book. The choice of surfactant for emulsions and microemulsions is treated in depth and important applications of microemulsions, such as detergency and enhanced oil recovered are presented. This book will be invaluable for scientists and engineers involved in surfactant production and formulation as well as students.

Book Interactions in Complex Solutions of Polymers Particles Salts and Surfactants

Download or read book Interactions in Complex Solutions of Polymers Particles Salts and Surfactants written by Beatrice Nicole Cattoz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental pressures are driving detergent formulations to become ever-more so- phisticated blends of stabilisers; probing the interactions occurring in complex systems of hydrosoluble polymers with surfactants and their adsorption onto particles is key for the understanding of the mechanism of colloidal stability. In this thesis, the polymer-polymer and polymer-surfactant interactions have been investigated both in bulk and at the solid/liquid interface. The main techniques used were solvent relaxation NMR, photon correlation spectroscopy, small angle neutron scattering, diffusion NMR and optical reflectometry. The majority of experiments involved polyvinyl pyrrolidone, PVP, adsorbed on silica. Addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, decreased the adsorbed amount but increased the layer thickness, leaving the remaining adsorbed polymer in an extended conformation caused by repulsive interactions amongst adsorbed surfactant aggregates and the silica interface. The introduction of a nonionic alcohol ethoxylate surfactant to this system prevented the desorption of the polymer layer as it formed mixed micelles with SDS reducing the total charges per micelle and lowering repulsions between the surface and the surfactant micelles. The effect of a non-adsorbing polymer, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, aPSS, on the stability of silica particles was also investigated, showing that addition of the polyelec- trolyte to the silica dispersion modifies the interparticles interactions. Small roughly spherical clusters were formed, followed by larger, less spherical aggregates resulting in the formation of a dense gel network. Exploring the PVP /N aPSS system showed that these polymers interact in bulk forming NaPSS-rich complexes; interfacial investigations revealed that adding aPSS to PVP previously adsorbed on silica led to surface complexes formation. Finally exposing PVP to sodium polyacrylate revealed some polymer interactions at high pH. These interactions were favoured by increasing molecular weights; adding this polymer to PVP adsorbed onto silica lead to a small decrease in adsorbed amount and some particle aggregation.
