Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is the development of scalable, low cost synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures based electrodes and to correlate the chemical modifications with their energy conversion performance. Methods in energy conversion in this thesis have focused on two aspects; a potentiometric chemical sensor was used to determine the analytical concentration of some components of the analyte solution such as dopamine, glucose and glutamate molecules. The second aspect is to fabricate a photo-electrochemical (PEC) cell. The biocompatibility, excellent electro-catalytic activities and fast electron transfer kinetics accompanied with a high surface area to volume ratio; are properties of some metal oxide nanostructures that of a potential for their use in energy conversion. Furthermore, metal oxide nanostructures based electrode can effectively be improved by the physical or a chemical modification of electrode surface. Among these metal oxide nanostructures are cobalt oxide (Co3O4), zinc oxide (ZnO), and bismuth-zincvanadate (BiZn2VO6) have all been studied in this thesis. Metal oxide nanostructures based electrodes are fabricated on gold-coated glass substrate by low temperature (< 100 0C) wet chemicalapproach. X-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the electrodes while ultraviolet-visible absorption and photoluminescence were used to investigate the optical properties of the nanostructures. The resultant modified electrodes were tested for their performance as chemical sensors and for their efficiency in PEC activities. Efficient chemically modified electrodes were demonstrated through doping with organic additives like anionic, nonionic or cationic surfactants. The organic additives are showing a crucial role in the growth process of metal oxide nanocrystals and hence can beused to control the morphology. These organic additives act also as impurities that would significantly change the conductivity of the electrodes. However, no organic compounds dependence was observed to modify the crystallographic structure. The findings in this thesis indicate the importance of the use of controlled nanostructures morphology for developing efficient functional materials.

Book excerpt: One-dimensional and hierarchical nanostructures have acquired tremendous attention in the past decades due to their possible application. In spite of the rapid emergence of new morphologies, the underlying growth mechanism is still not well understood. The lack of effective p-type or n-type doping is another obstacle for many semiconducting nanomaterials. A deeper investigation into these structures and new methods to fabricate devices are of significant impact for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Motivated by a desire to understand the growth mechanism of nanostructures and investigate novel device fabrication method, the research described in this thesis carried out on the synthesis, characterization, and device fabrication of semiconducting nanostructures. The main focus of the research was on ZnO, SnO2, and Zn3P2 for their great capability for fundamental phenomena studying, promising applications in sensors and optoelectronics, and the potential generalization of results to other materials. Within this study the following goals have been achieved: 1) Improved understanding of polar-surface-induced growth mechanism in wurtzite-structured ZnO and generalization of this growth mechanism with the discovery and analysis of rutile --structured SnO2, 2) observation of the significance of the transversal growth, which is usually ignored, in interpenetrative ZnO nanowires, 3) rational design and growth control over versatile nanostructures of ZnO and Zn3P2, and 4) conjunction of p-type Zn3P2 and n-type ZnO semiconducting nanostructures for device fabrications. The framework for the research is reviewed first in chapter 1. Chapter 2 gives the detailed experimental setup, synthesis procedure, and common growth mechanism for nanostructure growth. A detailed discussion on the growth of ZnO nanostructures in chapter 3 provides more insight into the polar-surface-induced growth, transversal growth, vapor-solid growth, and vapor-liquid-solid growth during the formation of nanostructures. Polar-surface-induced growth is also confirmed in the growth of SnO2 nanostructures, which is also included in chapter 2. Chapter 3 presents Zn3P2 nanostructures from the newly designed experiment setup and the device fabrication from ZnO and Zn3P2 crossed nanowires.

Book excerpt: The occurrence of available energy reservoirs is decreasing steeply, therefore we are looking for an alternative and sustainable renewable energy resources. Among them, hydrogen is considered as green fuel with a high density of energy. In nature, hydrogen is not found in a free state and it is most likely present in the compound form for example H2O. Water covers almost 75% of the earth planet. To produce hydrogen from water, it requires an efficient catalyst. For this purpose, noble materials such as Pt, Ir, and Ru are efficient materials for water splitting. These precious catalysts are rare in nature, very costly, and are restricted from largescale applications. Therefore, search for a new earth-abundant and nonprecious materials is a hot spot area in the research today. Among the materials, nanomaterials are excellent candidates because of their potential properties for extended applications, particularly in energy systems. The fabrication of nanostructured materials with high specific surface area, fast charge transport, rich catalytic sites, and huge ion transport is the key challenge for turning nonprecious materials into precious catalytic materials. In this thesis, we have investigated nonprecious nanostructured materials and they are found to be efficient for electrochemical water splitting. These nanostructured materials include MoS2-TiO2, MoS2, TiO2, MoSx@NiO, NiO, nickeliron layered double hydroxide (NiFeLDH)/Co3O4, NiFeLDH, Co3O4, Cu-doped MoS2, Co3O4- CuO, CuO, etc. The composition, morphology, crystalline structure, and phase purities are investigated by a wide range of analytical instruments such as XPS, SEM, HRTEM, and XRD. The production of hydrogen/oxygen from water is obtained either in the acidic or alkaline media. Based on the functional characterization we believe that these newly produced nanostructured materials can be capitalized for the development of water splitting, batteries, and other energy-related devices.

Chemical solution deposition method was used to control the phase and crytallinity by varying the growth temperature and time. Detailed characterizations of the crystal structure, chemical composition, and morphology of the as-synthesized products were carried out using adequate techniques. The mechanism governing the direct growth of oxide nanostructures on conducting and insulating substrates is studied. Field emission, electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of as-synthesized nanostructures are described in this work. This study reveals the excellent photocatalytic, electrochemical and field emission properties of vanadates nanowires with fairly low turn-on field and high current emission capability.

Steering the photo-induced charge-flow based on unique bandgap alignment in semiconductor heterojunctions is critical for photo-electric/chemical conversion. The author presents the controllable preparation strategies to synthesize 1D chalcogenide hetero-nanostructures with various fine structures, further been used as excellent template materials for preparing other novel and complex hybrid architectures through a series of chemical transformations. The heterogeneous growth mechanisms of novel hetero-nanostructures is studied for developing a facile and general method to prepare more novel heterostructures. The band gap structure simulations, detailed charge carrier behaviour and unique solar energy conversion properties of the prepared hybrid nanostructures are deeply investigated. This work would open a new door to rationally designing hybrid systems for photo-induced applications.
