This book was released on 1983 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At approximately 0052, 15 February 1982, the Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) Ocean Ranger, during a severe storm, commenced transmitting distress calls which indicated that the crew was abandoning ship. At or about 0307, 15 February 1982, the OCEAN RANGER capsized and sank in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 166 miles east of St. John's, Newfoundland in about 260 feet of water. Inspite of the extensive rescue efforts of numerous vessels and aircraft, none of the 84 crew members survived. Contributing causes to the casualty include the severe storm; the lack of written casualty control procedures; the inadequate ballast system pump and piping design and arrangement for dewatering at excessive heel or trim angles; and the lack of a chain locker flooding alarm. Contributing causes to the loss of life include the adverse weather; the lack of exposure suits; the inadequate launching systems for the lifeboats; the ineffectiveness of the life rafts; and the apparent failure of rig personnel to allow sufficient lead time for evacuation. Twenty-two bodies were recovered between 15 February 1982 and 24 February 1982. This report contains the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation Report and the Action taken by the Commandant to determine the proximate cause of the casualty and provide a response to the recommendations to prevent recurrence. The Commandant has concurred with the Board that the proximate cause of the casualty is the failure of the ballast control room portlight(s). The Coast Guard is working on changes to various regulations concerning lifesaving equipment, emergency procedures and manning standards on board MODUs. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 15, 1982, the oil rig Ocean Ranger sank off the coast of Newfoundland taking the entire crew of eighty-four men — including the author’s brother — down with it. It was the worst sea disaster in Canada since the Second World War, but the memory of this event gradually faded into a sad story about a bad storm — relegated to the “Extreme Weather” section of the CBC archives. Susan Dodd resurrects this disaster from the realm of “history” and maps the socio-political processes of its aftermath, when power, money and collective hopes for the future revised the story of corporate indifference and betrayal of public trust into a “lesson learned” by an heroic industry advancing technology in the face of a brutal environment. This book is a navigational resource for other disaster aftermaths, including that of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, and a call for vigilant government regulation of industry in all its forms.

This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lloyd’s Register Technical Association (LRTA) was established in 1920 with the primary objective of sharing technical expertise and knowledge within Lloyd’s Register. Publications have consistently been released on a yearly basis, with a brief interruption between 1938 and 1946. These publications serve as a key reference point for best practices and were initially reserved for internal use to maximise LR’s competitive advantage. Today, the LRTA takes a fresh approach, focusing on collaboration by combining professional expertise from across LRF & Group to ensure a frequent output of fresh perspectives and relevant content. The LRTA has evolved into a Group-wide initiative that identifies, captures, and shares knowledge spanning various business streams and functions. To support this modern approach, the LRTA has adopted a new structure featuring representatives and senior governance across the business streams and the LR Foundation. The Lloyd's Register Technical Association Papers should be seen as historical documents representing earlier viewpoints and are not reflective of current thinking and perspectives by the current LR Technical Association. The Lloyd's Register Staff Association (LRSA) changed its name to the Lloyd's Register Technical Association (LRTA) in 1973.

Book excerpt: Cold Water Oil: Offshore Petroleum Cultures is a collection of essays examining how societies conceive of fossil fuel extraction in the inhospitable but fragile waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. What happens offshore matters. Currently, over a quarter of the world’s oil and gas is produced from beneath the seas. The offshore petroleum industry is thus a crucial point of origin for global carbon emissions, and other environmental harms. Cold Water Oil: Offshore Petroleum Cultures illuminates ignored histories, influential contemporary narratives, and emerging energy and environmental futures. The volume centres on North Atlantic and Arctic regions; the continuing but often strongly contested pursuit of oil and gas in frigid, tumultuous, and environmentally sensitive seas enforces the lengths to which corporations and governments will go to maintain the centrality of fossil fuels. The book’s contributors focus on the cultural, social, and ecological implications of oil and gas extraction in the oceanic territories of Canada, Norway, the UK, Russia, the US, and the Iñupiat of Alaska at a time of profound global uncertainty. In conversation with the energy and environmental humanities, and critical ocean studies, Cold Water Oil considers a region central to debates about climate change and the planet’s future. Cold Water Oil engages students and researchers interested in climate change, energy humanities, critical ocean studies, and North Atlantic and Arctic issues.
