Book Analysis of Mine Backfill Behaviour and Stability

Download or read book Analysis of Mine Backfill Behaviour and Stability written by Zheming Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stable mine backfill is necessary for safe working conditions, maximum ore recovery and underground and surface stability. Due to the fact that cement costs can be a significant part of the operating costs in large underground mines, the consumption of cement (or binder) should be minimized. Therefore, developing a safe and economical backfilling method for the large underground mining operations is very significant." --

Book Mechanics of Mine Backfill

Download or read book Mechanics of Mine Backfill written by Mathew Helinski and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mine backfilling is the process of filling large underground mining voids ("stopes") with a combination of tailings, water and small amounts of cement, to promote regional stability. Stopes are often in excess of 20 m x 20 m in plan dimensions and 40-50 m tall, and can be filled within a week. Barricades are constructed in all tunnels ("drives") that access the stope to contain the backfill material. In recent years, a significant number of failures of mine backfill barricades have occurred, resulting in the inrush of slurry backfill into the mine workings. In addition, sampling has shown material strengths in situ to be far greater than equivalent mixes cured in the laboratory (indicating the potential for reducing the cement content). The purpose of this thesis is to apply soil mechanics principles to the mine backfill deposition process with the intent of providing some insight into these issues. In many cases, filling, consolidation and cement hydration all take place at a similar timescale, and therefore, to understand the cemented mine backfill deposition process it was necessary to appropriately couple these activities. Developing appropriate models for these mechanisms, and coupling them into a finite element code, forms the core of this thesis. Firstly, the fundamental processes involved in the cementing mine backfill deposition process are investigated and represented using theory founded on basic physical observations. Using this theory, one- and two-dimensional finite element models (called CeMinTaCo and Minefill-2D, respectively) are developed to fully couple each of the individual mechanisms. A centrifuge experiment was undertaken to investigate the interaction between consolidation and total stress distribution in a cementing soil. The results of this experiment were also used to verify the performance of Minefill2D. Due to scale effects, the centrifuge experiment was unable to fully couple the interaction of the cement hydration and consolidation timescales. To achieve this, a full scale field experiment was undertaken. The simulated behaviour achieved using Minefill-2D (with independently derived material properties) provided a good representation of the consolidation behaviour. Finally, a sensitivity study carried out using Minefill-2D is presented. This study enables some useful suggestions to be provided for managing the risk of excessive barricade stress, and for preparing laboratory samples to more appropriately represent in situ curing conditions.

Book The Exploitation of Natural Resources and the Consequences

Download or read book The Exploitation of Natural Resources and the Consequences written by R. W. Sarsby and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2001 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the pressure to conserve agricultural land and green-field sites has grown it has become increasingly important to reclaim land that has been damaged by past industrial usage, e.g. areas of mining subsidence, tailings dams and lagoons. Furthermore the need to conserve primary aggregates is providing an impetus for re-use of waste materials in engineered construction. This book is the proceedings of the GREEN3, the third in a four-yearly series of international symposia that discuss aspects of geotechnical engineering intimately related to the environment.

Book Experimental Study of Physical and Mechanical Properties of a Cemented Mine Tailings

Download or read book Experimental Study of Physical and Mechanical Properties of a Cemented Mine Tailings written by Mohammadamin Jafari and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical properties and behavior of mine backfill need to be better understood in order to increase the reliability of engineered backfill designs in deep and high stress mining conditions. The thesis makes a detailed examination of Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) from the Williams mine with a range of cement contents, curing times, and confining stresses relevant to underground mining. The first major contribution is understanding how cement hydration alters the density of the backfill's solid components. This understanding facilitates precise and accurate determination of cured backfill's bulk properties, which is critical to accurate interpretations in the context of the next two contributions. The second major contribution is evaluating CPB response to isotropic compression at hydrostatic pressures up to 6.5 MPa, which is particularly relevant when considering how the backfill provides regional ground support during mine-wide ground closure with ongoing ore extraction. Equations of state are developed to quantify the initial elastic response, the onset of bond crushing, and the transition to a compacted state under large confining stress. The final major contribution is understanding CPB shear strength under drained triaxial loading, which is relevant to geomechanical backfill design for mining under, beside or through previously placed backfill. Backfill response is characterized by initially contractive behavior up to a Characteristic State of volumetric strain reversal, leading to peak dilation rate at the Failure State. Equations of state are developed to quantify this behavior. The combined state equations for isotropic and triaxial loading can form the basis for future constitutive models of backfill behavior. Such constitutive models, when incorporated into numerical analysis codes, will provide more confident back-analyses of observed backfill performance, and more realistic assessments of backfill behavior under different proposed mining scenarios. Each of these contributions is novel to CPB research, but also complements the broader body of literature on naturally and artificially cemented soils. Equally important, the thesis provides a framework to examine the mechanical properties and behavior of backfills from other mining operations.
