Book Methods to Achieve Rut resistant Durable Pavements

Download or read book Methods to Achieve Rut resistant Durable Pavements written by Gerald A. Huber and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to state, local, and federal agency pavement materials, design, and construction engineers, as well as pavement research engineers and scientists. Those with supervisory oversight for pavement programs will also find it of interest. It describes the current practice for methods to achieve rut-resistant durable pavements. The synthesis documents current experience with permanent deformation of asphalt pavements and identifies methods to improve performance. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and international sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the extent of the rutting problem on the National Highway System, pavement mixture design issues, and the design of rut-resistant mixtures. In addition, alternate mixture types, including stone matrix asphalt and porous asphalt, are discussed, as well as international approaches to mixture design. Finally, the construction of rut-resistant mixtures, including the role of quality control and quality assurance methods, are discussed. A summary of permanent deformation causes and solutions is included in the appendix.

Download or read book Accelerated Laboratory Rutting Tests written by Prithvi S. Kandhal and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2003 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 25 years, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences, have carried out a wide variety of activities to improve understanding of the challenges in containing and reducing ethnic conflicts, violent extremism, and terrorism. Roots and Trajectories of Violent Extremism and Terrorism provides an overview of this cross-ocean program, which has involved American and Russian scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from a large number of government agencies, leading research institutions, think tanks, educational institutions, analytical centers, and consulting and commercial firms in the two countries. This report highlights challenges addressed by the academies over many years that remain of current interest as the U.S., Russian, and other governments continue to cope with old and new forms of aggression that threaten the livelihood of populations at home and abroad.

Book Investigation of the Rutting Performance of Pavements in Colorado

Download or read book Investigation of the Rutting Performance of Pavements in Colorado written by Timothy Aschenbrener and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the rutting performance from plastic flow on 33 hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements was performed. Air voids in the wheel path of 3.0% clearly distinguished pavements with good and bad rutting performance: air voids less than 3% rutted and air voids greater than 3% did not rut from plastic flow. Samples were recompacted in the Texas gyratory using the high and low efforts. Samples recompacted with air voids greater than 2.0% with the high effort or 3.0% with the low effort indicated good performance with respect to rutting. The air voids after the low effort of compaction correlated best with the air voids in the wheel path for high volume roadways. Component properties (aggregates, asphalt cements, gradation, etc.) did not reveal why the good pavements performed well and the bad pavements did poorly. Performance was directly tied to the void properties. Field verification should be performed throughout the project to provide indications of the future rutting performance of the pavements.

Book Determining the Degree of Aggregate Degradation After Using the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester

Download or read book Determining the Degree of Aggregate Degradation After Using the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester written by Randolph Reyes and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research conducted was to determine if aggregate degradation takes place and to measure the possible degree of degradation after bituminous mixtures are heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. A study was conducted which compared the original aggregate blend (control specimens) to the residual aggregate blend (experimental specimens) obtained after several bituminous mixtures were heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. The control specimens and the experimental specimens used to produce the bituminous mixtures were the result of an aggregate sample which was split three times. Two methods of analysis were used to review the gradation results.

Book I 76 Truck Study

Download or read book I 76 Truck Study written by David A. Price and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portions of the driving lane on I-76 located in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 4 are seriously distressed. To help prolong the life of the Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Region 4 has placed signs advising truckers to use the passing lane between Roggen and the Nebraska state line [approximately 140 miles (225 km)]. A test section well within the signed test area advising the truckers to use the passing lane and a control section just prior to the signed area were established and evaluated over a four year period. Roughness data taken with an Ames Profilograph, slab faulting measured with a Georgia fault meter, and overall physical pavement distress were noted and used as a comparison between driving lane and passing lane within the two sections.

Book Significant Findings from Full scale Accelerated Pavement Testing

Download or read book Significant Findings from Full scale Accelerated Pavement Testing written by Wynand JvdM. Steyn and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

Book Evaluation of the Iowa Vacuum Tester

Download or read book Evaluation of the Iowa Vacuum Tester written by William Outcalt and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation of joint seals has been a difficult job. The Iowa Department of Transportation has developed a testing system that gives a positive indication where there is a place where a joint seal leaks. This study evaluates the Iowa Vacuum Testing System and compares its results with those obtained by experienced visual evaluators on several types of seals in concrete pavement. Recommendations are made concerning use, maintenance, and possible changes in the system.
