Book Investigation of the Mixing of Coaxial Heterogeneous Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Investigation of the Mixing of Coaxial Heterogeneous Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion written by Gilles L. Hamelin and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the turbulent mixing of a sonic jet of helium discharging coaxially into a supersonic jet of air was made using a two dimensional mixing chamber. Volumetric concentration profiles were obtained and mass concentration and velocity along the jet centerline were plotted. The results indicated that both these vary inversely with the distance from the mixing origin raised to a four third power. Schlieren photography was applied in a semi-quantitative manner to confirm the validity of the above findings. This research project finds a potential application in the study and analysis of supersonic combustion ramjet engines. (Author).

Book Investigation of the Mixing of Perpendicular Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Investigation of the Mixing of Perpendicular Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion written by Stephan P. Condon and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the turbulent mixing of subsonic, sonic, and supersonic jets of helium discharging transversely into a supersonic jet of air was made using a two-dimensional mixing chamber. The investigation has a potential application in the field of the supersonic combustion ramjet engine. The Mach numbers of the helium jets were 0.75, 1.0, and 1.5, respectively, and the Mach number of the air jet was 1.5. Both the helium and air jets had stagnation temperatures of approximately 76F. The effects of combustion on the mixing were not considered. Volumetric concentration values and total pressure values were obtained at points in the mixing region, and helium volumetric concentration profiles were plotted. Schlieren photography was used to obtain a visualization of the flow structure. Sonic injection was found to be the most desirable method of injection due to depth of penetration and total pressure considerations. (Author).

Book Mixing and Combustion of a Supersonic Fuel Jet and a Subsonic Coaxial Gas Stream

Download or read book Mixing and Combustion of a Supersonic Fuel Jet and a Subsonic Coaxial Gas Stream written by John E Scott (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of mixing and burning is described in which the progress of mixing and burning is followed by observing the spatial variation of static pressure in the mixing duct. Experiments showed that the duct length required for mixing and for mixing with simultaneous chemical reaction of the gaseous fuel jet are identical and are independent of the amount to be mixed and burned. In order to aid in the interpretation of the experimental data, the flow field is assumed to be ''piecewise uniform'' over the mixing duct cross section. The analytical variation of the static pressure in the mixing agrees in a semi-quantitative manner with the experimental data. The experimental and analytical results are combined to provide the spatial and temporal variation of the mixing paramete. It is found that the combustion process has the general effect of increasing the mean duct velocity which increases the turbulent exchange coefficient and, hence, increases the mixing rate. For the experimental geometry considered, the mixing and burning time is roughly half of the time required for mixing only and is independent of the energy released in the chemical reaction. Book An Investigation of Supersonic Combustion and Heterogeneous Turbulent Jet Mixing Related to the Design operation of Scramjets

Download or read book An Investigation of Supersonic Combustion and Heterogeneous Turbulent Jet Mixing Related to the Design operation of Scramjets written by Ian Thomas Osgerby and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical kinetic calculations of the combustion time in a constant area scramjet combustion (Mo=7) indicate reaction times 0.00001 secs., and show that the combustion process is usually controlled by diffusion. The mixing process in concentric fueld/air jets is investigated by means of integral forms of the equations of motion and slow mixing requires about 50 diameter. Initial contraction of the slow inner jet is predicted by the theory, and verified by experiment. The simulation of scramjet combustion conditions by a shock tunnel is considered feasible. (Author).

Book Supersonic Mixing and Combustion of Coaxial Hydrogen Air Streams in a Duct

Download or read book Supersonic Mixing and Combustion of Coaxial Hydrogen Air Streams in a Duct written by James E. Drewry and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic investigation of supersonic mixing and combustion which is relevant to advanced propulsion concepts for a high Mach number, high altitude flight regime is described. A method of laboratory simulation is employed which is considered to be suitable for fundamental studies of diffusional-controlled mixing and combustion of confined coaxial streams of hydrogen and air under conditions approaching those of actual flight. A unique test facility consisting of a gas-fired, ceramic-brick air storage heater and an electrical-resistance hydrogen heater was used to generate test flow conditions at low static pressures, over wide ranges of temperature and velocity. Research studies have been carried out to obtain basic flow field data pertinent to the problem of turbulent mixing and combustion of heterogeneous gas streams under these conditions. Auto-ignition data from tests involving sustained combustion at an air Mach number of 2.6 are also presented. (Author).

Download or read book Scramjets written by Mostafa Barzegar Gerdroodbary and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scramjet engines are a type of jet engine and rely on the combustion of fuel and an oxidizer to produce thrust. While scramjets are conceptually simple, actual implementation is limited by extreme technical challenges. Hypersonic flight within the atmosphere generates immense drag, and temperatures found on the aircraft and within the engine can be much greater than that of the surrounding air. Maintaining combustion in the supersonic flow presents additional challenges, as the fuel must be injected, mixed, ignited, and burned within milliseconds. Fuel mixing, along with the configuration and positioning of the injectors and the boundary conditions, play a key role in combustion efficiency. Scramjets: Fuel Mixing and Injection Systems discusses how fuel mixing efficiency and the advantage of injection systems can enhance the performance of the scramjets. The book begins with the introduction of the supersonic combustion chamber and explains the main parameters on the mixing rate. The configuration of scramjets is then introduced with special emphasis on the main effective parameters on the mixing of fuel inside the scramjets. In addition, basic concepts and principles on the mixing rate and fuel distribution within scramjets are presented. Main effective parameters such as range of fuel concentration for the efficient combustion, pressure of fuel jet and various arrangement of jet injections are also explained. This book is for aeronautical and mechanical engineers as well as those working in supersonic combustion who need to know the effects of compressibility on combustion, of shocks on mixing and on chemical reactions, and vorticity on the flame anchoring. Explains the main applicable approaches for enhancement of supersonic combustion engines and the new techniques of fuel injection Shows how the interaction of main air stream with fuel injections can develop the mixing inside the scramjets Presents results of numerical simulations and how they can be used for the development of the combustion engines
