Book Investigation of the Effects of Radiant Heat on the Structural Efficiency of Aircraft and Missile Components Made of Glass fiber reinforced Plastic Laminates

Download or read book Investigation of the Effects of Radiant Heat on the Structural Efficiency of Aircraft and Missile Components Made of Glass fiber reinforced Plastic Laminates written by E. Alter and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation was performed to compare, by means of a controlled experiment, the effects produced by radiant heat with those produced by convective heat in aircraft structures fabricated of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic laminates. A complete 6-factor experiment was designed and analyzed statistically. The six main factors were heat source, size effect, shielding, quality control, post-cure temperature, and heating rate. Each factor had two levels; the experiment was replicated twice. Three separate studies with various thermal conditions were made with flat beams and cylinders. In all the studies, the analysis-of-variance method showed no difference between the effects of radiant and convective heat at the 5-percent level of significance. The difference between two manufacturers' quality controls were significant in some of the studies, but the difference due to shieldings was not significant. Size effect results were considered inconclusive because of some of the experimental problems involved. (Author).

Book Effects of Temperature and Time on Aircraft and Missile Structures

Download or read book Effects of Temperature and Time on Aircraft and Missile Structures written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautical Engineering and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey is made of the new problems introduced in the structural analysis of airplanes and missiles by the high temperatures caused by aerodynamic heating. Thermal stresses, thermal buckling, the effect of creep on stress distribution and stability, and ablation are discussed and special attention is paid to the behavior of the pure shells used in missiles. It is concluded that the modern structural analyst must acquire a knowledge of many disciplines that were of no interest to his predecessor working before World War II. Among these disciplines are thermodynamics, metallurgy, and the physics of the solid state. In all the new problems two parameters appear that did not enter classical structural analysis. The first is temperature which is the cause of all the difficulties of the modern structural designer and analyst. The second is time, because at high temperatures no structure can carry loads for indefinitely long periods. One of the most important tasks of the analyst of missiles is the determination of the lifetime of the structure. (Author).

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book From Archangel to Senior Crown written by Peter W. Merlin and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lockheed Blackbirds hold a unique place in the development of aeronautics. In their day, the A-12, YF-12, M-21, D-21, and SR-71 variants outperformed all other jet airplanes in terms of altitude and speed. Now retired, they remain the only production aircraft capable of sustained Mach 3 cruise and operational altitudes above 80,000 feet. This is the first book to address the technical aspects of these incredible aircraft. The author describes the design evolution of the Blackbird, from the Archangel to the Senior Crown (the Air Force's SR-71.) He describes in detail the construction and materials challenges faced by Lockheed, as well as the Blackbird's performance characteristics and capabilities.A NASA historian, the author describes NASA's role in using the aircraft as a flying laboratory to collect data on materials, structures, loads, heating, aerodynamics, and performance for high-speed aircraft. The reader will benefit from the technical and programmatic lessons learned. This volume was produced in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Book Composite Materials

Download or read book Composite Materials written by Krishan K. Chawla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the relationship between structure and properties, this is a well-balanced treatment of the mechanics and the materials science of composites, while not neglecting the importance of processing. This updated second edition contains new chapters on fatigue and creep of composites, and describes in detail how the various reinforcements, the materials in which they are embedded, and of the interfaces between them, control the properties of the composite materials at both the micro- and macro-levels. Extensive use is made of micrographs and line drawings, and examples of practical applications in various fields are given throughout the book, together with extensive references to the literature. Intended for use in graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses, this book will also prove a useful reference for practising engineers and researchers in industry and academia.

Book Riveted Lap Joints in Aircraft Fuselage

Download or read book Riveted Lap Joints in Aircraft Fuselage written by Andrzej Skorupa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of the pressurized fuselages of transport aircraft is a significant problem all builders and users of aircraft have to cope with for reasons associated with assuring a sufficient lifetime and safety, and formulating adequate inspection procedures. These aspects are all addressed in various formal protocols for creating and maintaining airworthiness, including damage tolerance considerations. In most transport aircraft, fatigue occurs in lap joints, sometimes leading to circumstances that threaten safety in critical ways. The problem of fatigue of lap joints has been considerably enlarged by the goal of extending aircraft lifetimes. Fatigue of riveted lap joints between aluminium alloy sheets, typical of the pressurized aircraft fuselage, is the major topic of the present book. The richly illustrated and well-structured chapters treat subjects such as: structural design solutions and loading conditions for fuselage skin joints; relevance of laboratory test results for simple lap joint specimens to riveted joints in a real structure; effect of various production and design related variables on the riveted joint fatigue behaviour; analytical and experimental results on load transmission in mechanically fastened lap joints; theoretical and experimental analysis of secondary bending and its implications for riveted joint fatigue performance; nucleation and shape development of fatigue cracks in riveted longitudinal lap joints; overview of experimental investigations into the multi-site damage for full scale fuselage panels and riveted lap joint specimens; fatigue crack growth and fatigue life prediction methodology for riveted lap joints; residual strength predictions for riveted lap joints in a fuselage structure. The major issues of each chapter are recapitulated in the last section.
