Book The Effects of a Schoolwide Data Based Decision Making Intervention on Elementary Schools Student Achievement Growth for Mathematics and Spelling

Download or read book The Effects of a Schoolwide Data Based Decision Making Intervention on Elementary Schools Student Achievement Growth for Mathematics and Spelling written by Trynke Keuning and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world during the last decade, policymakers increasingly emphasize the use of data in education to enhance student achievement. As a result, the number of reform initiatives to promote "data-based decision making" (DBDM) or "data-driven decision making" (DDDM) has increased rapidly. At the University of Twente in the Netherlands, a DBDM intervention was developed in which whole school teams participate in the training. In 2011, a first group of 53 elementary schools participated in this DBDM intervention and showed promising results. In 2012, a new cohort of schools started the intervention. The study reported on in this abstract was aimed at evaluating the intervention effects of this new cohort of schools. Data for this study were gathered from 40 elementary (K-6) schools in the Netherlands which participated in the DBDM intervention from August 2012 until July 2014. Student achievement data covering the period August 2010 until July 2014 were retrieved from schools' student monitoring systems. A multiple single-subject design was used to investigate the effect of this DBDM intervention on student achievement growth, and to investigate patterns in DBDM effectiveness based on background variables at both the school and the student level. Each school was measured repeatedly over time, before the intervention period (the control phase) and during the intervention period (the treatment phase). Findings revealed that a significant intervention-effect was found for both spelling and mathematics. This study revealed that mathematic outcomes improved especially for low-SES schools. Tables and figures are appended. [SREE documents are structured abstracts of SREE conference symposium, panel, and paper or poster submissions.].

Book A Study of the Impact of Response to Intervention on Student Achievement Scores in Elementary Schools

Download or read book A Study of the Impact of Response to Intervention on Student Achievement Scores in Elementary Schools written by Daniel Todtfeld and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project utilized data that reaches back five school years. Scores from MAP Communication Arts tests and Performance Series Communication Arts tests were collected. An ANOVA was calculated with MAP scores and Performance series data. The independent variable was the level of RTI students have received. The first group in the ANOVA consisted of students who received no RTI. Group 2 received one year of RTI and group 3 received two years of RTI. The dependent variable in the first ANOVA was MAP scores and the dependent variable in the second ANOVA was Performance Series scores. This study was inconclusive because there was a significant difference in the MAP Index, however, there was no significant difference in ELA Performance Series. Additionally, the review of literature does not provide strong enough reasoning to conclude that RTI does make a difference in student achievement.

Book Mathematics Interventions A Correlational Study of the Relationship Between Level of Implementation of the Accelerated Math Program and Student Achievement

Download or read book Mathematics Interventions A Correlational Study of the Relationship Between Level of Implementation of the Accelerated Math Program and Student Achievement written by Deborah Walker Driesel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current legislation, such as No Child Left Behind (2001) or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004), has increased accountability for schools for the education of all students. These laws require schools to provide interventions for struggling learners, as part of the Response to Intervention process (IDEA, 2004). Accelerated Math (AM), published by Renaissance Learning, is a scientifically based program designed to supplement quality instruction as part of the RtI process. This correlational study examined ex post facto data using pre and posttest scores on the STAR Math Test in relation to amount of classroom time dedicated to AM instruction This computer-based program was examined as part of the existing school day, in public school systems in the rural Arkansas area. The results of the study showed a strong correlation between the amount of time and student performance and a decrease in the achievement gap when AM is implemented. Some concerns were noted about lower student gains in older grades and lack of participation in younger grades. Several reasons were explored for this issue, including teacher evaluation, math anxiety, and stereotypes. Findings from the study may help streamline instructional strategies and processes, and improve teacher effectiveness and evaluation procedures for mathematics instruction of all students.

Book The Effects of Reflex Math as a Response to Intervention Strategy to Improve Math Automaticity Among Male and Female At Risk Middle School Students

Download or read book The Effects of Reflex Math as a Response to Intervention Strategy to Improve Math Automaticity Among Male and Female At Risk Middle School Students written by Daphne Sarrell and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for evidence-based math interventions that are easy to use and impact academic achievement are in demand, and the impact that these interventions can have on students who struggle with math achievement is of concern. In this study, the effects of Reflex math computerized intervention to improve the automaticity of basic math facts among male and female middle school students identified as at-risk for academic failure in mathematics was examined according to differences in mean scores and based on gender. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design was used for the purposes of the study. Convenience sampling among students receiving or qualifying for response to intervention services for math was used to determine the study participants. The Basic Math Operations Task (BMOT) served as the pretest and posttest against which differences in mean scores were determined with analysis of covariance used to examine the differences. Results as well as assumptions, limitations, and recommendations for the future are included.

Book The Effect of a Student Response System on Student Achievement in Mathematics Within an Elementary Classroom

Download or read book The Effect of a Student Response System on Student Achievement in Mathematics Within an Elementary Classroom written by Yvette Ellsworth Dix and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this quasi-experimental quantitative study was to determine if the use of a student response system, combined with an interactive whiteboard, led to increased student achievement in mathematics within a fifth grade classroom as measured by a district benchmark assessment and the annual Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) Test. The study was founded on the understanding that students in the United States were lagging further and further behind their international peers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. One potential way to motivate students in these areas was to adhere to the constructivist approach to learning and to involve students in the construction of their own knowledge. Although very little research has been conducted combining interactive whiteboards and student response systems in elementary classrooms to measure their effectiveness related to student achievement, this combination may be what is needed to address how to raise student academic scores while engaging digital native students in the process. In this study, student scores from a district benchmark assessment served as the baseline measure of mathematical proficiency. The AIMS Test served as the outcome measure of mathematics achievement in the study. An analysis of covariance was conducted and it demonstrated a significant difference, based on a significance level of .05, between the treatment and the control groups, with F = 6.83 and p = .01. It was therefore determined that the use of a student response system positively affected student achievement in mathematics.

Book Psychology and Mathematics Education

Download or read book Psychology and Mathematics Education written by Gila Hanna and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Mathematics is constructed rigorously through proofs, based on truths, which are either axioms or previously proven theorems. Thus, it is par excellence a model of rational inquiry. Links between Cognitive Psychology and Mathematics Education have been particularly strong during the last decades. Indeed, the Enlightenment view of the rational human mind that reasons, makes decisions and solves problems based on logic and probabilities, was shaken during the second half of the twentieth century. Cognitive psychologists discovered that humans' thoughts and actions often deviate from rules imposed by strict normative theories of inference. Yet, these deviations should not be called "errors": as Cognitive Psychologists have demonstrated, these deviations may be either valid heuristics that succeed in the environments in which humans have evolved, or biases that are caused by a lack of adaptation to abstract information formats. Humans, as the cognitive psychologist and economist Herbert Simon claimed, do not usually optimize, but rather satisfice, even when solving problem. This Research Topic aims at demonstrating that these insights have had a decisive impact on Mathematics Education. We want to stress that we are concerned with the view of bounded rationality that is different from the one espoused by the heuristics-and-biases program. In Simon’s bounded rationality and its direct descendant ecological rationality, rationality is understood in terms of cognitive success in the world (correspondence) rather than in terms of conformity to content-free norms of coherence (e.g., transitivity).

Book Student Academic Growth in Mathematics Through Teacher Practices in Tier 2 Response to Intervention

Download or read book Student Academic Growth in Mathematics Through Teacher Practices in Tier 2 Response to Intervention written by Shiela M. Neal and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics achievement continues to be an area of concern for many educators. Currently, schools struggle with effective implementation of Response to Intervention in mathematics. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of RtI on mathematics student achievement and to identify the teacher practices that are associated with the greatest positive growth on mathematics achievement for third grade students participating in a Tier 2 Response to Intervention. A concurrent, triangulation mixed methods design collected and analyzed both qualitative and quantitative data to address the research questions. Tier 2 mathematics teachers from three campuses in a 4A district located in northeast Texas participated in interviews and observations to determine the teacher practices used during Tier 2 mathematics instruction. Additionally, a slope of growth was calculated from the district benchmark student data on the students participating in Tier 2 mathematics intervention at the three elementary campuses to determine students with the most academic growth. The researcher found three different implementation processes with varying components of Response to Intervention. The comparison of two campuses in the triangulation stage found a significant difference in the mean slope of growth. The study concluded with a number of considerations for the participating district in the implementation of Response to Intervention with procedures, teacher practices, and mathematics instruction.
