Improving asphalt binder low temperature fracture and stiffness properties continues to be a subject of particular concern. Therefore, significant amount of research has been focused on improving asphalt binder properties through modification. In recent years, wide ranges of oil based modifications have been introduced to improve asphalt binder performance, especially at the low service temperatures. Although, significant use of these oils is seen in practice, knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of oil modification and their properties for achieving optimum characteristics is limited. Hence, this study focuses on better understanding of the effect of oil modifiers which would help better material selection and achieve optimum performance in terms of increasing the life span of pavements.

In this study, the effect of oil modification on the rheological properties of the asphalt binder is investigated. To examine the effect of oil modification on binder characteristics, low temperature properties as well as high temperature performance of oil modified binders were evaluated. It is found that oils vary in their effects on asphalt binder performance. However, for all oils used in the study, adding an oil to binder can improve binder low temperature performance, and this result mainly attributed to the softening effect. In addition to that, a simple linear model is proposed to predict the performance grade of oil modified binder based on the properties of its constituents at high and low temperatures. Another part of this study focuses on the oil modification effect on asphalt binder thermal strain and stresses. A viscoelastic analytical procedure is combined with experimentally derived failure stress and strain envelopes to determine the controlling failure mechanism, strain tolerance or critical stress, in thermal cracking of oil modified binders. The low temperature failure results depict that oil modification has a good potential of improving the cracking resistance of asphalt binders during thermal cycles.

Book excerpt: The current study investigates the impact of processed oil on asphalt binder PG 64-22 and conjugate of it with common modifiers such as Crumbed Rubber Modifier (CRM), Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene (SIS), Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) and Petroleum Resin (PE). The binder was tested at different temperatures, and different amounts of modifiers and processed oil were added to the binder. The modified binders were also aged artificially using different procedures. The study found that adding processed oil to polymer modified binders reduces viscosity and improves workability, while the modifiers improve the rutting resistance of them, however, the addition of processed oil reduces the binder's rutting performance due to decrement of viscosity. The study also found that the conjugating of modifying polymers and processed oil improves the low temperature cracking resistance. The study's results indicate that co-modifying polymer binders with processed oil resulted in a significant reduction in viscosity values, resulting in improved workability. The results also showed that increasing the processed oil concentration from 6% to 12% caused a viscosity reduction in conjugation of CRM, SIS, SBS and PE. Even though the addition of processed oil results in a reduction in the rutting performance of asphalt binder, the addition of polymers significantly improved the rutting resistance of asphalt binders. The modified asphalt binders containing 6% and 12% processed oil decreased the G*sin ð values. This reduction caused improvement of fatigue cracking resistance of all binders modified with CRM, SIS, SBS and PE. The higher concentration of processed oil means 12% showed greater reduction rate compared to the asphalt binders containing 6% processed oil. The BBR results for modified asphalt binders showed that the incorporation of CRM, SIS, SBS and PE and processed oil improved the low temperature cracking resistance significantly, due to the high penetration rate of processed oil in asphalt binders during modification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal induced cracking of asphalt mixtures is currently recognized as one of the primary distresses of asphalt pavements in cold climate regions. Thermal cracking is caused by cold temperatures, which results in the asphalt mixture becoming brittle and less capable of tolerating and relaxing thermally induced stresses. The contraction of the asphalt pavement due to decreasing temperature combined with the underlying base restraining any movement causes stress build up in the pavement until the ultimate strength is reached of the asphalt mixture, which leads to thermal crack formation. Although there are many proven asphalt modification methods to improve the asphalt performance at high service temperatures, oil modification is one of few methods that can address the low temperature distresses. Although the use of oil modifiers is common in today’s asphalt industry, oil modification’s effects to the aging mechanisms of the asphalt is relatively unknown. This study focuses on determining the implications on the aging process when using oil modifiers in asphalt binder and asphalt mastic phases. In this thesis three different oils (paraffinic, refined waste, and bio oil) were evaluated for their effects to the aging mechanisms in comparison with the unmodified base binder. The characterization of these materials was conducted by two approaches including: a.) Superpave linear viscoelastic approach using the Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) and b.) Fracture mechanics approach using the Single Edge Notched Beam (SENB) test. In order to capture the effects of aging, the relative changes in performance were monitored through three stages of aging that aim to simulate the asphalt binder at different times within a pavement’s service life. The aging behavior of oil modified binders was also captured in the mastic phase, which is a more representative state of the continuous phase in an asphalt pavement in comparison to just the binder phase. Results indicate that the oil modification significantly effects the binder phase, but does not significantly affect the mastic phase. Binder results indicate the overall aging resistance of asphalt binder is slightly improved with oil modification and the time that aging occurs within the aging cycle is significantly altered in comparison with the unmodified binder. However, the refined waste oil in higher concentrations demonstrated detrimental effects to the aging characteristics of the binder. Mastic performance results showed little correlation with the binder performance indicating that the filler is a dominating factor. However, the mineral filler type (granite vs limestone) noticeably influenced the resulting performance of the mastics. Overall, this study concludes that oil modification can significantly alter the aging mechanisms of the binder, however these changes in binder performance do not correlate well to performance in the mixture phase.

Book excerpt: Many state departments of transportation have adopted the Superpave PG specification since the completion of the Strategic Highway Research Program in 1993. A much wider range of crude oil sources and binder modification techniques are being used now to produce asphalt binders. Although asphalt binders used these days still meet the requirements of the PG specification, many premature failures have been reported by many states. Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) initiated a study on re-refined engine oil bottom (REOB) in 2015. The objectives of this study were to establish REOB detection methods and recommend maximum allowable amount of REOB in asphalt binders and seal coat binders. Based on existing literatures, researchers developed and verified scientific methods to detect and quantify the amount of REOB in both asphalt binders and seal coat binders using a handheld or a benchtop X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) instrument. Furthermore, a comprehensive study was performed to define the impact of REOB on asphalt binders, asphalt mixtures, and seal coat performance. Multiple sources of binders, aggregates, and REOB (including recycled binders, PPA, and GTR) were used in the evaluation. Laboratory test results clearly indicated that the addition of REOB has detrimental effects on rutting, cracking, and seal coat adhesion properties. Not only should the current upper limit of 5 percent REOB in asphalt binders be kept, but an upper limit of 5 percent REOB in seal coat binders needs to be established. The implementation of these XRF tools and recommendations on the upper limits of REOB in binders will make pavements last longer as intended.
