These were a pitot type intake, an axisymmetric model with a center body, a ramp and a scoop intake. The pitot intake was unique in that its only instability was at low and zero mass flow, and was of the acoustic organ pipe type. The other intakes were characterized by a high frequency oscillation at low mass flows, and a more complex phenomenon, known as buzz, at higher mass flows. It is believed that all diffusers which have a surface ahead of the inlet will have these two types of oscillation present to some degree, and that they will be the form as described in this report.

It has become apparent that a normal shock in the diverging part of the diffuser is probably necessary for stable flow, and ways of minimizing the intensity of this shock have been developed. The effect of various geometrical parameters, especially contraction ratio in the entrance region, on the performance of supersonic diffusers has been investigated. By the use of these results, diffusers were designed which, starting without initial boundary layer, recovered 90 percent of the kinetic energy in supersonic air streams up to a Mach number of 1.85.

The investigation indicated that a pressure disturbance in the diffuser had only a small effect on engine speed, whereas a disturbance in engine speed had a large effect on diffuser pressure and could impose severe requirements on diffuser control response.

Book excerpt: The unsteady, compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved for the flow field about an external compression axi-symmetric inlet with a length to diameter ratio, L/D = 15.88, at Mach 2.0 and a Reynolds number based on diameter, ReD = 2.36 times 10 to the 6th power, operating in the near-critical and subcritical flow regimes. The near-critical solution reached a stable steady state while the subcritical solutions attained an unstable bounded oscillatory state, characterized by large amplitude pressure oscillations and traveling shock waves. This phenomenon is a result of a shear layer instability combined with a closed-loop feedback of reflected disturbances and the naturally occurring self-sustained oscillations are commonly known as buzz. Numerical results are given in terms of Mach contours, velocity field plots, pressure-time traces at selected stations, as well as mass flux and other mass-averaged quantities along the duct length. Book excerpt: The aerodynamic characteristics of spherical-segment cups, ranging from a disc to a hemisphere, and cylindrical cups, having different depths, have been investigated in supersonic flow. The supersonic flow about hemispherical cups and cylindrical cups of a particular depth was found to be very unstable. The instability was characterized by violent oscillations of the detached shock wave coupled with unsymmetrical mass spillage from the cavity. The flow and shock wave instability were studied in a wind tunnel by means of high-speed motion pictures, shadowgraphs, schlieren photographs, wave diagram analysis, and surface pressure measurements. The water analogy was also used to study the flow instability.
