Download or read book Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management written by Sarah L. Fowler and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.
Download or read book The behavior and sensory biology of elasmobranch fishes an anthology in memory of Donald Richard Nelson written by Timothy C. Tricas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elasmobranch fishes include the living sharks, skates and rays that are important members of nearly all marine ecosystems. Their large size, secretive behavior, and wide-ranging habits make them difficult to observe in the field or to maintain in captivity. Consequently, little is known about their natural behavior and how it is mediated by their sensory systems. This volume is dedicated to the scientific contributions and memory of Donald Nelson, a pioneer in the study of shark behavior, sensory biology, and remote instrumentation. The two opening papers review Don Nelson's unique scientific accomplishments and provide insight into his strong bias towards study of animals in the field. These are followed by 14 scientific papers on elasmobranch behavior, sensory biology, and current monitoring technologies. The papers on elasmobranch sensory biology and behavior address questions on hearing, the lateral line, electroreception, the brain, orientation behavior, chemical irritants, feeding, and reproduction. The latter section of the volume presents papers on conventional tagging techniques, ultrasonic telemetry, physiological telemetry, remote monitoring techniques, archival tagging and satellite tagging. The intent of this volume is to familiarize both new and established scientists with the sensory biology and behavior of sharks and rays, and to encourage further behavioral research on these animals in their natural environment.
Download or read book Case Studies of the Management of Elasmobranch Fisheries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Fao. This book was released on 1999 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the population biology and fishery management of elasmobranchs at regional, national and sub-regional levels - in Atlantic Europe, the United States, the Caribbean, Guatemala, South Africa, Uruguay, the Falkland Islands, the Seychelles, two states in India, the Maldives, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Fiji and Ecuador. Regional accounts are given of management of Galeorhinus galeus, deepwater sharks and elasmobranch considerations of a tuna commission. NGO elasmobranch activities are described and an analysis of the quality of the relevant data in the FAO Nominal Catches and Landings Data Base. The topics of the resource, fishery and associated species, current status of fisheries and harvesting processes are described together with the evolution of the catch, fleet, fishing effort, commerce, fishery markets and revenues from the fishery. Comments on the economics of the fishery and nature of the workforce are also given. In relation to fisheries administration, management objectives and national fisheries policies are described and the manner of the planning process. Where applicable, the objectives setting process, relevant stakeholders and the handling of management negotiations are noted. The nature of gear restrictions and their effectiveness together with vessel regulations and where they exist, on catch, closed seasons, effort limitations, etc., are described Where management planning occurs, the provision of resource management advice together with a description of the departments involved and management activities are described. Several papers review stock assessment activities plus descriptions and analyses of the biological advice review process with comments on the sustainability of the resource. National accounts describe the relevant law and enforcement processes. The report consists of two parts.

Download or read book Sharks of the Open Ocean written by Merry D. Camhi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-21 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and exciting title represents the first authoritative volume focussed on pelagic (open ocean) sharks as a group. Virtually every pelagic shark expert in the world has contributed to this landmark publication which includes the latest data and knowledge on pelagic shark biology, fisheries, management, and conservation. Pelagic sharks face unprecedented levels of exploitation in all the world's oceans through both direct fisheries and by-catch, and effective management for these species is contingent upon solid science and data, which this book brings together for the first time. All those involved in shark biology will need to have a copy of this book.

Download or read book Fish atlas of the Celtic Sea North Sea and Baltic Sea written by Henk J.L. Heessen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atlas presents a unique set of abundance data to describe the spatial, depth, size, and temporal distribution of demersal and pelagic fish species over an extensive marine area, together with accounts of their biology. A large number of pictures, graphs and distribution maps illustrate the text. By largely avoiding - or at least explaining - scientific terms and providing extensive references, the book should be useful for both laymen and scientists. The quantitative information on some 200 fish taxa is derived from 72,000 stations fished by research vessels during the period 1977-2013. The area covers the northwest European shelf from west of Ireland to the central Baltic Sea and from Brittany to the Shetlands. Although the surveys extend beyond the shelf edge, only taxa reported at least once in waters less than 200 m are included. Typical deep-water species and typical fresh-water species are excluded. We hope this publication will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the ocean ecosystems.
