Book excerpt: Proper soil characterization requires a combination of laboratory and in-situ testing to gather insight into soil properties, their spatial extent, and various engineering parameters of interest at the project site. The assessment of sample disturbance for intermediate soils and quantifying spatial variability in site investigation using a transition probability geostatistical approach is addressed herein. A laboratory study is presented to quantify the response of intermediate soils subjected to various levels of sample disturbance. Results indicate clay-based sample disturbance criteria are not applicable to low plasticity soils, due in part to in changes in soil compressibility. A work-based approach is used to demonstrate Cr/Cc captures sample disturbance that is independent of plasticity, overburden stress, and OCR. Systematic investigation of these effects requires consistent preparation methodology across a range of fine-grained intermediate soils. A slurry preparation methodology for preparing reconstituted mixtures of fine-grained, intermediate soils across a range of plasticity from nonplastic to high plasticity soils was developed. The approach presented herein produces uniform samples with repeatable oedometer consolidation, monotonic triaxial compression, monotonic simple shear, and cyclic simple shear behavior. Separately, nonplastic silts and low plasticity silty clays prepared via acid dissolution provides a mechanism for systematically investigation of fabric effects in the laboratory. Acid dissolution of an admixed finely ground carbonate soil is shown to increase the state parameter for nonplastic silt resulting in changes to undrained shearing response from dilative to contractive behavior, while low plasticity silty clay under the same process does not form measurable structure nor results in changes to state parameter, suggesting the particle dissolution method using acid may be limited to nonplastic soils. Site characterization is a process used in part to assess and extend discrete observations from in-situ testing, sampling, and lab testing. This process is amenable to geostatistical approaches, where the role of geostatistics is to extend what is known from discrete sampling to unsampled locations. Geostatistical simulations are used to directly map anticipated zones of subsurface liquefaction for a spatially variable project site. Development of robust geostatistical simulations requires an understanding of the interrelationship between the number of sampling locations, subsurface correlation structure, separation distance, and extent of site coverage. Discussion of these effects and the ability to capture correlation structure and produce realistic subsurface simulations is shown using an idealized example and an industry project site.
