Book Investigation of Residual Stress in Steel Welds

Download or read book Investigation of Residual Stress in Steel Welds written by Anna Maria Paradowska and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to improve knowledge and understanding of residual stress in steel welds by providing a detailed distribution of those stresses measured by non-destructive independent techniques, such as neutron and synchrotron diffraction methods. The work has investigated improved measurement and data interpretation procedures relating to these techniques. One investigation related to the design of stress-free reference samples and the procedure by which they should be measured. Another investigation related to the development of consistency checks on the residual stress measurements to ensure that they met boundary requirements. It was found that these factors were critical for obtaining good correlation between residual stresses measured by synchrotron and neutron diffraction. The work adds to the understanding of the nature of residual stress in welded components. The measurements were compared to the estimates published in the current fitness-for- service codes and provide a sounder base by which finite element models can be judged.

Book Investigation of Residual Stresses in Steel Weldments

Download or read book Investigation of Residual Stresses in Steel Weldments written by Koichi Masubuchi and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental hydrogen-induced-cracking tests were made on 45 weldments in mild steel, HY-80 steel, a commercial high-strength structural steel, and SAE 4340 steel. Extensive cracks were found in weldments made in SAE 4340 steel (oil quenched and tempered at 500 F) after hydrogen charging for relatively short times. Systematic crack patterns that could be related to residual stress distributions were obtained on various complex weldments. When steels of lower strengths were used, longer charging time was required to produce cracks, and crack patterns were less pronounced. The hydrogen-induced-cracking technique does not seem to work on mild-steel weldments. It has been found that hydrogen-induced cracking is stress sensitive rather than plastic-strain sensitive. This has been proved by hydrogen-induced-cracking tests on mechanically stress-relieved specimens and press-fit specimens in which residual stresses were produced by purely elastic deformation. It was found that distributions of residual stresses in mild-steel and SAE 4340 steel weldments were quite similar despite the considerable differences in the yield strengths of the two base plates and the weld metals. This was proved in butt joints up to 38 inches long and complex welded structures. (Author).

Book Residual Stress Analysis on Welded Joints by Means of Numerical Simulation and Experiments

Download or read book Residual Stress Analysis on Welded Joints by Means of Numerical Simulation and Experiments written by Paolo Ferro and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to quantify residual stresses induced by welding processes through experimentation or numerical simulation has become, today more than ever, of strategic importance in the context of their application to advanced design. This is an ongoing challenge that commenced many years ago. Recent design criteria endeavour to quantify the effect of residual stresses on fatigue strength of welded joints to allow a more efficient use of materials and a greater reliability of welded structures. The aim of the present book is contributing to these aspects of design through a collection of case-studies that illustrate both standard and advanced experimental and numerical methodologies used to assess the residual stress field in welded joints. The work is intended to be of assistance to designers, industrial engineers and academics who want to deepen their knowledge of this challenging topic.

Book Processes and mechanisms of welding residual stress and distortion

Download or read book Processes and mechanisms of welding residual stress and distortion written by Zhili Feng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a fabrication technology, welding presents a number of technical challenges to the designer, manufacturer, and end-user of the welded structures. Both weld residual stress and distortion can significantly impair the performance and reliability of the welded structures. They must be properly dealt with during design, fabrication, and in-service use of the welded structures. There have been many significant and exciting developments on the subject in the past ten to fifteen years. Measurement techniques have been improved significantly. More importantly, the development of computational welding mechanics methods has been phenomenal. The progresses in the last decade or so have not only greatly expanded our fundamental understanding of the processes and mechanisms of residual stress and distortion during welding, but also have provided powerful tools to quantitatively determine the detailed residual stress and distortion information for a given welded structure. New techniques for effective residual stress and distortion mitigations and controls have also been applied in different industry sectors. Processes and Mechanisms of Welding Residual Stress and Distortion provides a comprehensive summary on the developments in the subject. It outlines theoretical treatments on heat transfer, solid mechanics and materials behavior that are essential for understanding and determining the welding residual stress and distortion. The approaches for computational methods and analysis methodology are described so that non specialists can follow them. There are chapters devoted to the discussion of various techniques for control and mitigation of residual stress and distortion, and residual stress and distortion results for various typical welded structures are provided. The second half of the book looks at case studies and practical solutions and provides insights into the techniques, challenges, limitations and future trends of each application. This book will not only be useful for advanced analysis of the subject, but also provide sufficient examples and practical solutions for welding engineers. With a panel of leading experts this authoritative book will be a valuable resource for welding engineers and designers as well as academics working in the fields of structural and mechanical engineering.

Book Residual Stresses in Friction Stir Welding

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Friction Stir Welding written by Nilesh Kulkarni and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of residual stresses in friction stir welding and reviews the data reported for various materials. Residual stresses produced during manufacturing processes lead to distortion of structures. It is critical to understand and mitigate residual stresses. From the onset of friction stir welding, claims have been made about the lower magnitude of residual stresses. The lower residual stresses are partly due to lower peak temperature and shorter time at temperature during friction stir welding. A review of residual stresses that result from the friction stir process and strategies to mitigate it have been presented. Friction stir welding can be combined with additional in-situ and ex-situ manufacturing steps to lower the final residual stresses. Modeling of residual stresses highlights the relationship between clamping constraint and development of distortion. For many applications, management of residual stresses can be critical for qualification of component/structure. - Reviews magnitude of residual stresses in various metals and alloys - Discusses mitigation strategies for residual stresses during friction stir welding - Covers fundamental origin of residual stresses and distortion

Book Study of Residual Stresses and Microcracks in High Strength Steel Weldments

Download or read book Study of Residual Stresses and Microcracks in High Strength Steel Weldments written by Stephen Edward Iwanowicz and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) allows viewing welds with a resolution to 0.25 microns. The image processor of the CSLM provides effectively infinite depth of field by superposing the in-focus parts of images. Slopes of more than 30 degrees do degrade the image, however. 4-point bend tests of bead-on-plate welds on 1 1 mm thick mild steel, HY-100, HSLA- 100, and HY-130 were performed to strains of 0 to 0.02 parallel to the weld bead. A longitudinal, single-pass weld bead of E7014 was manually applied to one specimen of each material with shielded metal arc welding. Displacement-load and moment-curvature results were as expected. Images from gold-shadowed replicas studied using the CSLM were recorded both on video tape and photographically. Initial microcracks 1 200 microns long were observed in the weld metal. No microcracks were observed in the HAZ of any material. Slag and oxide layers sometimes interfered with observing the weld metal and adjacent baseplate. Under monotonic loading, cracks widened with little growth and Widmanstatten structures appeared unchanged. Crack-like features, 1.5 microns long were present on the weld and on the HAZ. These features are probably oxide cracks and did not appear to grow when stressed.

Book Introduction to the Physical Metallurgy of Welding

Download or read book Introduction to the Physical Metallurgy of Welding written by Kenneth Easterling and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Physical Metallurgy of Welding deals primarily with the welding of steels, which reflects the larger volume of literature on this material; however, many of the principles discussed can also be applied to other alloys. The book is divided into four chapters, in which the middle two deal with the microstructure and properties of the welded joint, such as the weld metal and the heat-affected zone. The first chapter is designed to provide a wider introduction to the many process variables of fusion welding, particularly those that may influence microstructure and properties, while the final chapter is concerned with cracking and fracture in welds. A comprehensive case study of the Alexander Kielland North Sea accommodation platform disaster is also discussed at the end. The text is written for undergraduate or postgraduate courses in departments of metallurgy, materials science, or engineering materials. The book will also serve as a useful revision text for engineers concerned with welding problems in industry.
