Book Fundamentals of Gas Phase Ion Chemistry

Download or read book Fundamentals of Gas Phase Ion Chemistry written by K.R. Jennings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 1990 Advanced Study Institute entitled "Fundamentals of Gas Phase Ion Chemistry" held at Mont Ste. Odile , Alsace, France, 25th June -6th July, 1990. The Institute brought together over 100 physicists, physical and organic chemists working on a wide variety of topics with gas-phase ion chemistry as the common theme. Many different viewpoints, making use of very different experimental and theoretical approaches, were brought to bear on the subject and provided a stimulating and up-to-date account of the subject. Although the Institute was built around the invited lectures, many specific points were addressed in workshops which consisted of informal discussion groups which were organised by participants during the Institute. This volume therefore contains not only chapters based on the lectures but summaries of many of the workshops which adds considerably to the diversity of information presented. This Advanced Study Institute was the fifth in a series of NATO-sponsored institutes devoted to various aspects of the physics and chemistry of gas phase ions. These meetings have been held every four years since the first, held in Biarritz in 1974, considered "Interactions between Ions and Molecules". The five volumes which comprise the proceedings of these meetings illustrate very clearly the many advances in theory and experiment which have taken place over the last 20 years.

Download or read book Reactive Intermediates written by Leonardo S. Santos and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades there has been considerable growth in the development of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) as a practical method in the study of reaction mechanisms. This method allows the interception and characterization of key intermediates, either as transient species or as protonated/deprotonated forms of neutral species by API-MS. The outstanding features and advantages of ESI-MS make it one of the most suitable tools for the fast screening of intermediates directly from solution, providing hitherto unavailable chemical information to organic chemists. This monograph provides an overview of the mechanisms involved in ESI-MS, the historical perspectives before looking further in-depth at specific reactions and intermediates. Written by researchers in the field, this book is an unique resource for the understanding of this cutting-edge technique.

Book Advances in Gas Phase Ion Chemistry

Download or read book Advances in Gas Phase Ion Chemistry written by N.G. Adams and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-04-23 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas-phase ion chemistry is a broad field which has many applications and which encompasses various branches of chemistry and physics. An application that draws together many of these branches is the synthesis of molecules in interstellar clouds. This was part of the motivation for studies on the neutralization of ions by electrons and on isomerization in ion-neutral associations. The results of investigations of particular aspects of ion dynamics are presented in this volume. Solvation in ion-molecule reactions is discussed and extended to include multiply charged ions by the application of electrospray techniques. This volume also provides a wealth of information on reaction thermodynamics which is critical in determining reaction spontaneity and availability of reaction channels. More focused studies are also presented towards the end of this volume, relating to the ionization process and its nature.

Download or read book Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry written by David H. Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of gas phase inorganic ion chemistry is relatively new; the early studies date back approximately twenty years, but there has been intense interest and development in the field in the last ten years. As with much of modern chemistry, the growth in gas phase inorganic ion chemistry can be traced to the development of instrumentation and new experimental methods. Studies in this area require sophisticated instruments and sample introduc tion/ ionization methods, and often these processes are complicated by the need for state-selecting (or collisionally stabilizing) the reactive species in order to assign the chemistry unequivocally. At the present level of experimental development, a wide range of experiments on diverse ionic systems are possible and many detailed aspects of the chemistry can be studied. Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry focuses on the reactions of metal ions and metal clusters, and on the study of these species using the available modern spectroscopic methods. Three of the twelve chapters cover the chemistry of ionic monometal transition metal ions and the chemistry of these species with small diatomics and model organics. Two of the chapters focus on the studies of the chemical and physical properties of (primarily) transition metal clusters, and these chapters review experimental methods and capabilities. Two chapters also deal with the chemistry of transition metal carbonyl clusters, and these chapters address issues important to cluster growth and activation as well as the characterization of such species.

Book Generation and Observation of Reactive Intermediates in the Gas Phase and Condensed Media

Download or read book Generation and Observation of Reactive Intermediates in the Gas Phase and Condensed Media written by Matthew Jordan Nava and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A molecular beam mass spectrometer (MBMS) has been constructed and upgraded with a laser desorption system. MBMS has allowed for the detection of reactive small molecules including but not limited to P2 from P2A2 (where A = anthracene, C14H10), HCP from PPh3(HCP)A and various dialkylamino phosphinidenes from their corresponding dibenzo-7-phosphanorbornadiene precursors by mass spectrometry. In cases where the desired reactive small molecule was not detected, MBMS has provided valuable information as to the degradation processes which may be occurring and has guided molecular precursor development. Through the use of highly sensitive microwave spectroscopic techniques, it was found that H2S and N2O3 react to form the elusive molecule HSNO in the gas phase. HSNO is believed to be a crucial intermediate in biological signaling. Through isotopic labeling studies, an accurate structure of HSNO could be derived and subsequent degradation of the molecule was explored. The hexacarboxamide cryptand mBDCA-5t-H6 was used as a ligand to prepare mono- and bimetallic iron complexes of the formula [Fe2(mBDCA-5t)]2− and [Fe(mBDCA-5t-H3)]−. Both complexes were observed to react reversibly or irreversibly with CO or NO respectively to afford [(FeEO)-Fe(mBDCA-5t)]2- or [FeEO(mBDCA-5t-H3)]− where E = C or N. Treatment of [(FeNO)·Fe(mBDCA-5t)]2− with excess NO resulted in the formation of [Fe2O(mBDCA-5t)]2-, which could be independently prepared by treatment of [Fe2(mBDCA-5t)]2− with the O-atom transfer reagent N-methylmorpholine N-oxide. The chemistry of peroxide dianion, in the form of the encapsulated complex [O2[subset]mBDCA- 5t-H6]2-, has been explored in nonaqueous media. In particular, [O2[subset]mBDCA-5t-H6]2- was demonstrated to react with CO gas at 40 °C over the course of several hours to furnish the encapsulated carbonate cryptate, [CO3[subset]mBDCA-5t-H6]2-. Through labeling studies, it was confirmed that the carbon of the carbonate was derived from CO. Treatment of [O2[subset]mBDCA-5t-H6]2- with CO2 also affords [CO3[subset]mBDCA-5t-H6]2-, but with concomitant oxidation of the solvent. The oxidation of the solvent was found to proceed through the reactive oxidants −O2COOCO2- and HOOCO2- and sheds light on oxidative processes which may be occurring in lithium-air cells. Exposure of solid Li2O2 to gaseous p-benzoquinone results in the formation of a blue coating on Li2O2. This coating was identified as the quinone radical anion Li[p-C6H4O2], which forms via lithium and electron transfer from Li2O2. This charge and ion transfer process results in the conversion of Li2O2 to LiO2, a long-sought intermediate in the lithium-air community.

Book Time Resolved Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Time Resolved Mass Spectrometry written by Pawel L. Urban and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time is an important factor in physical and natural sciences. It characterizes the progress of chemical and biochemical processes. Mass spectrometry provides the means to study molecular structures by detecting gas-phase ions with the unique mass-to-charge ratios. Time-resolved mass spectrometry (TRMS) allows one to differentiate between chemical states that can be observed sequentially at different time points. Real-time mass spectrometric monitoring enables recording data continuously with a specified temporal resolution. The TRMS approaches – introduced during the past few decades – have shown temporal resolutions ranging from hours down to microseconds and beyond. This text covers the key aspects of TRMS. It introduces ion sources, mass analyzers, and interfaces utilized in time-resolved measurements; discusses the influence of data acquisition and treatment; finally, it reviews most prominent applications of TRMS – in the studies of reaction kinetics and mechanism, physicochemical phenomena, protein structure dynamics, biocatalysis, and metabolic profiling. It will assist science and engineering students to gain a basic understanding of the TRMS concept, and to recognize its usefulness. In addition, it may benefit scientists who conduct molecular studies in the areas of chemistry, physics and biology.

Book Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics

Download or read book Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics written by Alfonso Hernández-Laguna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes collect forty-four selected papers from the scientific contributions presented at the Third European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics, held in Granada (Spain), April 19–22, 1998. Ninety-nine scientists from Bulgaria, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Ki- dom, Uruguay and Venezuela attended the workshop, discussing the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. The workshop took place at the ‘Los Alixares’ Hotel, where 45 lectures were given by prominent members of the scientific community; in addition, 49 posters were presented in two very animated sessions. The success of this workshop is due, without doubt, to the excellent tradition initiated at the previous workshops, organised by Prof. R. McWeeny in San Miniato, Pisa (Italy), 1996, and by Prof. S. Wilson in Oxford (United Kingdom), 1997. These workshops create occasions for meetings and disc- sions on the current state of the art, emerging methods and applications and new trends in this area of science. The three meetings were sponsored and partially supported by the European Union (EU) in the frame of the Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) chemistry actions.
