Book Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways Phase I Preliminary Laboratory Investigation

Download or read book Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways Phase I Preliminary Laboratory Investigation written by P. S. Bussone and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three cements have been studied for possible use in the rapid repair of bomb-managed runways. These are: (a) lumnite (L), a high-alumina cement which was blended with portland cements type I, II, and III, regulated-set cement, and other concrete admixtures; (b) regulated-set cement (R), a halogenated calcium aluminate cement which was blended with gypsum additives in varying amounts from 0 to 12.5 percent and also mixed with an accelerator, sodium metasilicate (SMS); and (c) ordinary portland cement with various accelerators, Sigunit (S), sodium metasilicate (SMS), and sodium carbonate. Compressive strength of 2-in. cubes were determined at ages varying from 45 min to 28 days to establish strength development information. With some cements, neat slurry grout-type mixtures were made and tested in the same manner as the mortar mixtures. Water-cement ratios varied from 0.50 to 0.70 for the mortar mixtures and flow, when measured, was determined by the flow table method. With the neat slurry mixtures w/c ratios varied from 0.30 to 0.80, the efflux time being measured by the flow-cone method. The results indicate the following: (a) that many of the accelerators and so-called fast-setting cements do not develop 1-hour strengths sufficient for use in rapid repair of bomb-damaged runways; (b) two materials studied have yielded 1-hour compressive strengths in excess of 1000 psi. One is a cement, regulated-set, a proprietary product of the Portland Cement Association, and the second is an accelerator, known as sodium metasilicate, which has shown promise in both mixtures of ordinary portland and regulated-set cements.

Book Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways by Unique Chemical Means

Download or read book Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways by Unique Chemical Means written by John A. Peasley and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of chemical quick setting materials to evaluate the performance of the promising compositions for repair of a bomb damaged runway. A single wheel rolling test trailer was fabricated to test surfacing material and sub-base construction. A three (3) inch layer of wire reinforced polyester bonded rock was tested sucessfully on a 10 x 10 foot site at Eglin Air Force Base with a 28,000 pound load supported by an aircraft wheel 31 x 11:50, 272 psi tire. Special equipment to make full scale applications in the minimum time will be required. Polyester resins appear to show the most promise because of the greater latitude in curing condition. Book Repair of Bomb damaged Runway

Download or read book Repair of Bomb damaged Runway written by T. Yoshihara and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made to determine the capability of construction battalion forces to make hasty repairs to a bomb-damaged runway under wartime conditions using presently authorized equipment, and to evaluate the effects of high-explosive bombs dropped on an airfield runway. A field exercise, conducted at an abandoned airfield during the period of 18-22 November 1963, consisted of damaging a runway with live bombs dropped by A4C aircraft, followed by emergency repair operations. Tests of the restored runway proved the adequacy of the repair procedure. (Author).

Book Latex Modification of Fast Fix C 1 Cement for the Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways

Download or read book Latex Modification of Fast Fix C 1 Cement for the Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways written by R. Douglas Eash and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report consists, essentially, of two parts: a state-of-the-art review and laboratory testing of the effects of adding two Dow polymeric latexes to Fast-Fix C-1. The state-of-the-art review covers several basic studies in which many materials, both organic and inorganic, were investigated. The study was then focused on the study of fast-setting inorganic cements and methods to obtain high strength concrete, silicate concrete, and cementitious ceramic materials, are also covered. The state-of-the-art review also has a section indicating areas in which fast-setting cements can serve and the requirements placed on this service. Topics covered are runway design, pavement requirements, pavement evaluation, surface repair, and cold weather construction. In the lab study, two polymeric latexes, Dow Latex 460 and Dow Latex 464, were incorporated at selected concentrations in Fast-Fix C-1 mortars. Tests were conducted to determine freeze-thaw durability, tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength, and shear bond. All latex concentrations improved bond strength and freeze-thaw durability and decreased 24-hour water absorption. All concentrations tended to retard set and early strength gain. Low concentrations (4%) of Latex 464 produced a modest improvement in compressive and flexural strengths, but no change in the elastic modulus. (Author).

Book Evaluation of Polyurethane Resins Used for Rapid Runway Repair Operations Tyndall AFB Florida

Download or read book Evaluation of Polyurethane Resins Used for Rapid Runway Repair Operations Tyndall AFB Florida written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capability to continue to operate from bomb-damaged airfields has become an increasing Air Force concern. The repair of airfield pavements damaged by enemy weapons must be completed rapidly after an attack to allow launch and recovery of combat aircraft. New developments in weapons technology and increased demands in aircraft operations make existing crater repair procedures inadequate. The Air Force Engineering and Services Center (AFESC), Tyndall AFB FL was tasked to investigate several bomb damage repair materials. This report describes how the USAF Occupational and Environmental Health Laboratory determined ambient concentrations of the ingredients of PERCOL-S100, PERCOL-X- 58-47-2 and Ashland Resin 65-088 during two simulated runway repair surveys. Results from the PERCOL-S100 survey indicated perchloroethylene would pose the greatest health risk to the workers while results of the PERCOL-X-58-47-2 and Ashland Resin 65-088 survey indicated and ingredients of PERCOL-58-47-2 did not pose a significant health risk; however, the Ashland resin ingredients, particularly phenols, hydrocarbons and pyridine, could pose a risk to the health of the workers.

Book Water compatible Polymer Concrete Materials for Use in Rapid Repair Systems for Airport Runways

Download or read book Water compatible Polymer Concrete Materials for Use in Rapid Repair Systems for Airport Runways written by T. Sugama and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water-compatible polymer concrete (PC) formulations have been developed which appear to have potential for use in all-weather rapid repair procedures for bomb-damaged runways. Formulations consisting of furfuryl alcohol, water-saturated aggregate, dry silica flour, promoters, and catalysts produced composites with properties suitable for repair purposes when mixed and polymerized at temperatures from -20 to 30 C. Calcium-unsaturated polyester complexed PC also produced excellent properties. However, the early strength criteria, (2000 psi (13.78 MPa) at 1 hr) and other requirements such as compatibility of the formulation with water and practical working times could be attained only at temperatures>20 deg C. This system can be polymerized under water. Studies of the polymerization reaction mechanisms, materials properties, costs, and potential placement methods were performed. (Author).

Book An Investigation Into the Use of Polymer concrete for Rapid Repair of Airfield Pavements

Download or read book An Investigation Into the Use of Polymer concrete for Rapid Repair of Airfield Pavements written by Michael T. McNerney and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of a high-strength, fast setting mixture of methyl methacrylate and dry aggregate was conducted. The resulting polymer-concrete (PC) was very strong, durable, and bonded excellently to concrete. Tests were conducted to determine the variables affecting the polymerization time and strength of polymer-concrete. Field tests were conducted to interstate highways and a major airport taxiway which demonstrated the feasibility of making rapid polymer-concrete repairs at a reasonable cost. Laboratory tests of a 3-foot by 6-foot area repaired by PC and an individual PC slab under repeated loadings of simulated truck and aircraft traffic demonstrated the excellent strength and durability of the material. A cost analysis found the cost of monomer to be approximately $10/cubic foot for most repairs. (Author).
