Book Physics of Separated Flows Numerical Experimental and Theoretical Aspects

Download or read book Physics of Separated Flows Numerical Experimental and Theoretical Aspects written by Klaus Gersten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 37 contributions in which the research work is summarized which has been carried out between 1984 and 1990 in the Priority Research Program "Physik abgeloster Stromungen" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Society). The aim of the Priority Research Program was the inten sive research of the whole range of phenomena associated with separated flows. Physi cal models as well as prediction methods had to be developed based on detailed experi mental investigations. It was in accordance with the main concept of the research program that scientists working on problems of separated flows in different technical areas of application participated in this program. The following fields have been represented in the program: aerodynamics of wings and bodies, aerodynamics of auto mobiles, turbomachinery, ship hydrodynamics, hydraulics, internal flows, heat exchan gers, bio-fluid-dynamics, aerodynamics of buildings and structures. In order to concentrate on problems common in all those areas the emphasis of the program was on basic research dealing with generic geometric configurations showing the fundamental physical phenomena of separated flows. The engagement and enthusiasm of all participating scientists are highly appreciated. The program was organized such that all researchers met once a year to report on the progress of their work. Special thanks ought to go to Prof. E. A. Muller (Gottingen), Prof. H. Oertel jun. (Braunschweig), Dr. W. Schmidt (Dornier), Dr. H. -W. Stock (Dornier) and Dr. B. Wagner (Dornier), who had the functions of referees on those annual meetings.

This book was released on 2018-07-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although studies have been done to understand the dependence of parameters for the occurrence of deep stall, studies to control the flow for sustaining lift for a longer time has been little. To sustain the lift for a longer time, an understanding of the development of the flow over the airfoil is essential. Studies at high speed are required to study how the flow behavior is dictated by the effects of compressibility. When the airfoil is pitched up in ramp motion or during the upstroke of an oscillatory cycle, the flow development on the upper surface of the airfoil and the formation of the vortex dictates the increase in lift behavior. Vortex shedding past the training edge decreases the lift. It is not clear what is the mechanism associated with the unsteady separation and vortex formation in present unsteady environment. To develop any flow control device, to suppress the vortex formation or delay separation, it is important that this mechanism be properly understood. The research activities directed toward understanding these questions are presented and the results are summarized. Ahmed, Sajeer Unspecified Center...

Book An Analysis of the Laminar Separated Flow Field Near the Midchord of an Airfoil

Download or read book An Analysis of the Laminar Separated Flow Field Near the Midchord of an Airfoil written by Kasichainula Venkateswarlu and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formation of laminar separation bubbles as a mechanism of transition from laminar to turbulent boundary layer flow is a characteristic of many laminar wing sections when operating at a Reynolds number of less than 2 x 10^. In the case where the separation bubble occurs near the midchord, the separated flow field has an appreciable effect on the turbulent boundary layer development and consequently affects the drag of the wing section. An analysis of the laminar separated flow field is therefore needed to predict the complete development of the boundary layers on such a wing section. Experimentally determined characteristics of the separated flow are essential in developing an adequate theory to analyze the separated flow region. This thesis describes some of the characteristics of the laminar separated flow field and the development of the necessary analytical tools to predict the boundary layer characteristics in the case when a laminar separation bubble exists as a mechanism for transition. A wind tunnel study was made of the boundary layer in the vicinity of the bubble near the midchord of an NACA 66^-018 airfoil section. The investigation covered the study of the mean and turbulent characteristics of the flow. The present experiments corroborated the observations of other investigators; but also revealed some interesting new results. Based on the present experimental data, a two-layer eddy viscosity model was developed for prediction of the boundary layer in the redeveloping region downstream of reattachment. A numerical method for analysis of the laminar separated flow field was developed, utilizing existing experimental evidence together with data obtained in this investigation. A numerical method was also developed for analysis of the upstream laminar boundary layer to provide initial conditions for the separated flow region. These numerical methods of analysis consist of finite difference iterative solutions to the steady boundary layer equations. The present method of analysis of the laminar separated flow field gives results having a qualitative behavior similar to that observed in numerous experiments; and they are also in reasonable quantitative agreement with available experimental data. A procedure for predicting the complete development of the boundary layers in the presence of a separated flow was constructed and tested. It was found to be effective in determining the effects of separated flow on the boundary layer characteristics and thus the lift-drag characteristics of an airfoil section.
