Book Laser Produced Heavy Ion Plasmas as Efficient Soft X Ray Sources

Download or read book Laser Produced Heavy Ion Plasmas as Efficient Soft X Ray Sources written by Takeshi Higashiguchi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We demonstrate extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray sources in the 2- to 7 -nm spectral region related to the beyond extreme ultraviolet (BEUV) question at 6.x nm and a water window source based on laser-produced high-Z plasmas. Strong emissions from multiply charged ions merge to produce intense unresolved transition array (UTA) toward extending below the carbon K-edge (4.37 nm). An outline of a microscope design for single-shot live- cell imaging is proposed based on a high-Z UTA plasma source, coupled to x-ray optics. We will discuss the progress and Z-scaling of UTA emission spectra to achieve lab-scale table-top, efficient, high-brightness high-Z plasma EUV-soft x-ray sources for in vivo bio-imaging applications.

Book Extreme Ultraviolet and Soft X ray Diagnostics of High temperature Plasmas Annual Progress Report June 1 1976 May 31 1977

Download or read book Extreme Ultraviolet and Soft X ray Diagnostics of High temperature Plasmas Annual Progress Report June 1 1976 May 31 1977 written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of the research program at this laboratory from mid February 1976 until January 31, 1977, are described. The four major research areas of the program: diagnostic studies of magnetically confined high temperature plasmas, supporting laboratory studies, theoretical studies of highly ionized atoms, and instrument development are discussed. Spatially resolved ultraviolet measurements on Elmo Bumpy Torus have determined impurity confinement times. The measured oxygen densities and fluxes are being determined at Alcator; the spectroscopic studies show that hydrogen discharges in this tokamak have an effective Z close to one. A laboratory study of the Penning discharge between 100 and 300 A shows that it is a bright source for evaluation of EUV diagnostic instrumentation. Design of a multispatial element spectrometer system is complete and construction has begun. A spectrophotometer compatible with both types of facilities is available for absolute intensity calibration transfer from the NBS SURF II facility to ERDA plasma facilities. Computer programs needed for relativistic calculation of transition probabilities and wavelengths have been completed and applied to calculations in the Li, Be, Ar, and K isoelectronic sequences.

This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report discusses the four major research areas of this program: diagnostic studies of CTR plasmas, laboratory spectroscopy and calibration at short wavelengths, theoretical computation of transition probabilities for highly ionized atoms, and instrument development for short wavelength studies of CTR devices. Using existing instruments, diagnostic studies are under way at Versator and Elmo Bumpy Torus. A facility has been completed for the sensitivity calibration of spectrometers down to 300 A as complete units. The development of computer programs necessary for transition probability calculations is ninety percent complete. An f/20 forty cm focal length concave grating spectrometer has been constructed utilizing very high vacuum techniques to reduce contamination of plasma devices and calibration sources such as SURF II at NBS. New designs for grazing incidence monochromators have been developed.

Book Low and Mid Z EUV Spectroscopy of High Temperature Plasmas

Download or read book Low and Mid Z EUV Spectroscopy of High Temperature Plasmas written by Penka Georgieva Wilcox and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy has proven to be an essential tool for plasma diagnostics, both of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. Exploitation of the EUV and soft x-ray (SXR) spectral regions is very promising but a relatively recent and challenging area of study. While these ranges are more difficult to access, due to the harsh environment and the plentitude of atomic resonances and photoabsorption, they provide very sensitive tools for elemental and chemical identification, thus creating many scientific and technological opportunities. In this dissertation, a comprehensive spectroscopic study of EUV/SXR radiation from variety of low- and mid-Z plasmas was accomplished by the author. The emphasis was on application of the newly developed non-Local Thermodynamics Equilibrium (non-LTE) models of various elements (Li, C, B, N, O, F, Al, and Ni) for studying radiative properties of different high temperature plasmas. In addition, relativistic atomic data calculations, including dielectronic recombination and satellite lines of Ni ions, that implement several different codes and take into account a large number of configurations to assure accuracy, were performed. The applications of models to following experiments were considered: NSTX at Princeton, SSPX and EBIT at LLNL, and "Sparky" laser plasma and NTF Zebra Z-pinch experiments at UNR. As a result, the spectral features of EUV/SRX experimental radiation generated under various plasma conditions were compared and analyzed: from NSTX tokamak (at relatively low electron densities of 1013 -1014 cm−3) to the laser-produced and Z-pinch plasma spectra (at higher electron densities of 1018 -102° cm−3) and at various electron temperatures - from as low as 20 eV up to 300 eV. These investigated low- and mid-Z high resolution experimental data help to benchmark and improve our spectroscopic models and theory.

Book Capillary Discharge Extreme Ultraviolet Lasers Colorado State Univ Ft Collins

Download or read book Capillary Discharge Extreme Ultraviolet Lasers Colorado State Univ Ft Collins written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project objective is to explore the generation of soft X-ray laser radiation in a plasma column created by a fast capillary discharge. The proposed capillary lasing scheme offers the potential for compact, simple and efficient soft X-ray laser sources. For this purpose a compact, fast pulse generator which produces 100 kA current pulses with a risetime of 11 ns was constructed. Initial experiments were conducted in evacuated capillaries, in which the plasma is produced by ablation of the capillary walls. The soft X-ray emission from discharges in polyethylene capillary channels was studied to investigate the possibility of amplification in the 3-2 transition of C VI, at? = 18.2 nm. Time-resolved spectra in which this transition appears anomalously intense with respect to the 4--2 transition of the same ion were obtained. To date, however, this phenomenoa could not be confirmed as gain, as the intensity of the 18.2 nm line has not been observed to increase exponentially as a function of the capillary length. Encouraging results were obtained by fast pulse discharge excitation of capillaries filled with preionized gas. High temperature (Te> 150 eV), small diameter ( -200?m) plasma columns were efficiently generated. Fast current pulse excitation of a selected low mass density of uniformly preionized material Mag the capillary was observed to detach rapidly the plasma from the capillary walls, and form a plasma channel of a diameter much smaller and significantly hotter than those produced by a similar current pulse in evacuated capillaries of the same size. Discharges in argon-filled capillaries at currents between 20 and 60 kA produced plasmas with ArX-Ar{sub XIV} line emission, and with spectra that are similar to those of plasmas generated by> I MA current implosions in large pulsed power machines. The characteristic of these plasmas approach those necessary for soft X-ray amplification in low Z elements.
