This book was released on 2002 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facilities are established at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) to perform radiation-induced chromosome aberration analysis for biological dosimetry. Whole blood from healthy human volunteers was used after obtaining informed consent. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were exposed in vitro to different types of radiation; sup 60 Co gamma rays (E(gamma) = 1.25 MeV, mean of the absorbed dose distribution of the lineal energy, y(sub D) = 1.9 keV/micrometers, 1 Gy/min); x rays (250 kV(sub p), E = 83 keV, y(sub D) = 4 keV/micrometers, 1 Gy/min); or a fission-spectrum neutron source (E = 0.71 MeV, y(sub D) = 65 keV/micrometers, 0.25 Gy/min). Distribution of radiation-induced dicentrics among cells exhibited Poisson statistics as characterized by the Papworth method (Papworth 1970). Dose-response relationships for the yield of dicentrics for photon sources were fitted with a linear-quadratic model using the maximum-likelihood method and for the neutron source by a weighted linear regression method. Comparison of the data with other published studies is presented. The dose-response relationships for dicentric induction by low-and high-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation are consistent with the single- and two-track model of aberration formation, Y = alpha D + beta D(sup 2). An increase in y(sub D) resulted in an increase in dicentric yield. As expected, fission neutrons induced a significantly higher yield of dicentrics than that caused by low-LET sources. The linear component of the model, corresponding to damage caused by single-tracks, is predominant with fission neutrons so that the dose-effect relationship is essentially linear. An automated metaphase finder system with a satellite scoring utility was used to improve data collection.

Book Prompt Fission Gamma ray Studies at DANCE

Download or read book Prompt Fission Gamma ray Studies at DANCE written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of correlated data on prompt-fission [gamma]-rays (PFG) have been carried out for various actinide isotopes in recent years using the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). We have developed a model that conveniently parametrizes the correlated data of [gamma]-ray multiplicity and energy. New results on two- dimensional prompt-fission [gamma]-ray multiplicity versus energy distributions from spontaneous fission on 252Cf and neutron-induced fission on 242mAm are presented together with previously obtained results on 233,235U and 239Pu. Correlated PFG data from 252Cf are also compared to results of the detailed theoretical model developed at LANL, for different thresholds of PFG energies. Future plans to measure correlated data on fission fragments, prompt fission neutrons and [gamma]-rays at DANCE are presented.

Book Alpha Beta and Gamma Ray Spectroscopy

Download or read book Alpha Beta and Gamma Ray Spectroscopy written by K. Siegbahn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 915 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alpha-, Beta- and Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy Volume 1 offers a comprehensive account of radioactivity and related low-energy phenomena. It summarizes progress in the field of alpha-, beta- and gamma-ray spectroscopy, including the discovery of the non-conservation of parity, as well as new experimental methods that elucidate the processes of weak interactions in general and beta-decay in particular. Comprised of 14 chapters, the book presents experimental methods and theoretical discussions and calculations to maintain the link between experiment and theory. It begins with a discussion of the interaction of electrons and alpha particles with matter. The book explains the elastic scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei and the interaction between gamma-radiation and matter. It then introduces topic on beta-ray spectrometer theory and design and crystal diffraction spectroscopy of nuclear gamma rays. Moreover, the book discusses the applications of the scintillation counter; proportional counting in gases; and the general processes and procedures used in determining disintegration schemes through a study of the beta- and gamma-rays emitted. In addition, it covers the nuclear shell model; collective nuclear motion and the unified model; and alpha-decay conservation laws. The emissions of gamma-radiation during charged particle bombardment and from fission fragments, as well as the neutron-capture radiation spectroscopy, are also explained. Experimentalists will find this book extremely useful.

Book Delayed Fission Gamma ray Characteristics of Th 232 U 233 U 235 U 238 and Pu 239

Download or read book Delayed Fission Gamma ray Characteristics of Th 232 U 233 U 235 U 238 and Pu 239 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delayed fission gamma-rays play an important role in determining the time dependent ioniz- ing dose for experiments in the central irradiation cavity of the Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR). Delayed gamma-rays are produced from both fission product decay and from acti- vation of materials in the core, such as cladding and support structures. Knowing both the delayed gamma-ray emission rate and the time-dependent gamma-ray energy spectrum is nec- essary in order to properly determine the dose contributions from delayed fission gamma-rays. This information is especially important when attempting to deconvolute the time-dependent neutron, prompt gamma-ray, and delayed gamma-ray contribution to the response of a diamond photo-conducting diode (PCD) or fission chamber in time frames of milliseconds to seconds following a reactor pulse. This work focused on investigating delayed gamma-ray character- istics produced from fission products from thermal, fast, and high energy fission of Th-232, U-233, U-235, U-238, and Pu-239. This work uses a modified version of CINDER2008, a transmutation code developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, to model time and energy dependent photon characteristics due to fission. This modified code adds the capability to track photon-induced transmutations, photo-fission, and the subsequent radiation caused by fission products due to photo-fission. The data is compared against previous work done with SNL- modified CINDER2008 [1] and experimental data [2, 3] and other published literature, includ- ing ENDF/B-VII. 1 [4]. The ability to produce a high-fidelity (7,428 group) energy-dependent photon fluence at various times post-fission can improve the delayed photon characterization for radiation effects tests at research reactors, as well as other applications.
