Book Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour

Download or read book Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour written by D.A. Ardus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two main areas of offshore activity are addressed in this book: Site investigation on assessment; and Applications and foundation engineering. The 37 contributions from a wide ranging group of international experts, are resulting from the Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour Conference, London, U.K., September 1992. Adequate determination of site conditions can only be achieved by the integrated approach of using geological, geophysical and geotechnical data. Developments in data acquisition techniques are illustrated through case histories in the section on Geotechnical Sampling and Testing. In the section on Advanced Interpretation Techniques and Integrated Interpretations the state of the art of these topics is also illustrated by case histories. A review of foundation behaviour is presented in the section on Gravity Foundations, Foundation Performance Monitoring, Piling Research and Design Criteria. These topics are illustrated in the light of field experience and recent research, in particular that involving full-scale tests and monitoring. This book provides many illustrative figures and much pertinent information to exploration and marine geophysicists, petroleum and offshore engineers and for researchers working these fields.

Book The Mechanical Behavior of Heavily Overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay

Download or read book The Mechanical Behavior of Heavily Overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay written by Albalyra Geraldine Vargas Bustamante and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotechnical engineers encounter some of the most challenging problems in heavily overconsolidated soils. Clays under this condition originated in nature or man-made construction. This thesis investigates the mechanical behavior heavily overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay (RBBC), as an analog test material. The uniformity, reproducibility, and extensive knowledgebase on this clay permit the investigation of only the effect of overconsolidation. A series of undrained triaxial compression shear tests have been performed on specimens that were Ko-consolidated and swelled to overconsolidation ratios (OCR) ranging from 5 to 62 on RBBC, as well as on Intact Presumpscot Maine Clay. Specimens were consolidated to maximum stress levels between 1.1 and 5.4 MPa. The undrained shear behavior revealed an important relationship with overconsolidation ratio. The triaxial compression test results exhibit a significant increase in the undrained strength ratio (su/[sigma]'vc) when normalized to the minimum consolidation stress. It also shows an important increase in the stiffness, increase in the strain ([epsilon]f) to mobilize the peak resistance and a significant increase of friction angle ([phi]') with overconsolidation. The applicability of the SHANSEP equation and impact on its equation parameters are also discussed in detail. A comprehensive comparison of the new results with prior normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated data is presented, showing the distinct behavior of heavily overconsolidated specimens. The failure envelope displays a non-linear behavior and the undrained shear strength (su) is reduced up to about 80% from a normally consolidated clay to a heavily overconsolidated clay with an OCR = 50. These observations demonstrate the importance of selecting appropriate design values in the presence of overconsolidated soils.

Book The Effects of Sample Disturbance on Preconsolidation Pressure for Normally Consolidated and Overconsolidated Clays

Download or read book The Effects of Sample Disturbance on Preconsolidation Pressure for Normally Consolidated and Overconsolidated Clays written by Nikolaos Stefanos Kontopoulos and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sample disturbance has always been a particularly challenging topic in Geotechnical Engineering exercise. The effect and importance of disturbance on stress-strain history and undrained shear strength of soft clays are well stated in the literature over the past decades. However, in practice, few qualitative methods are used even in the most complex engineering projects. Furthermore, there is not a widely accepted, quantitative method in order to assess sample disturbance and treat the lab engineering values to match the "in-situ" properties of the soil. This research consists of a systematic review of the methods available to estimate preconsolidation pressure and sample quality. It focuses on multiple disturbance-simulation triaxial tests on resedimented San Francisco Bay Mud (RSFBM) specimens. The effect of different ISA disturbance amplitudes (Baligh et al. 1987) on the compression curve and the preconsolidation pressure is quantified. After every disturbance simulation circle, the specimens are reconsolidated using SHANSEP technique, well into the Virgin Compression Line (VCL), to erase all the previous effects of disturbance. Then, every recompression curve is treated as an initial compression phase but, of known disturbance. A series of tests are performed in Normally Consolidated (NC) and Overconsolidated (OC) specimens over a wide range of stresses. The effect of disturbance on an element outside the centerline of the sampling tube is simulated. A new method to quantify disturbance based on a modified recompression and compression indices ratio is proposed. Results indicate that for medium sensitivity soils, disturbance does not have a significant effect on preconsolidation pressure. However, increasing disturbance decreases significantly the researcher's capability to define with accuracy the preconsolidation pressure value. The calculated value can be overestimated as well as underestimated. Santagata and Germaine's (1994) conceptual model is verified experimentally. The model characterizes the loss of effective stresses and the change of VCL slope as the two most important outputs of disturbance that play a key role in the value of preconsolidation pressure. Results also indicate that the effects of disturbance are much less apparent when the OCR increases and that accounting for swelling leads to an overestimation of the preconsolidation pressure.
